Almost made it happen today. I decided to go check cameras and scout. I slowly approached my climber and had 3 bucks next to it. One was a big 12 @ 25 yards broadside. Unfortunately, there was too much under growth in my way and I didn't feel confident with the shot. He would have been any easy 140/150". I backed out after the other bucks ran away. I could a few fresh scrapes on my way in and I refreshed them with hopes of getting out tomorrow. The does are running around like crazy. Had more doe pics now the the corn is out. At one stand I had 5 does underneath @ 8am. It was great to see the big guys on their feet during daylight. This all happened around 11.
Well I got a doe on Sunday so I am on the board and now to get after the bucks. I have to cut her up today. WIndy and rainy with possible major snow coming tonight and Tomorrow. She came into the foodplot with a fawn. Winds were swirling and she got a little of my scent. She calmed down a bit but I did not wait to see if she would come into camera for the shot so I took a 22 yards shot. My scent control works great, minimize scent so deer only get a little scent keeps them from spooking and running off. I think they think the hunter is farther away or came through earlier.
Way to go smokey. I was at my farm this weekend and it's getting close. Saw a lot of little bucks cruising around all day. Called in a 120" 8 point that I just can't bring my self to shoot. He only has one brow tine and the other is 1.5" long. Very thin rack, I think he is only a 2 yr old. Saw a really heavy 8 point at the end of the food plot 120 yards away last night. The neighbor is going to call me if it starts rocking. I can take off any day exceptFriday this week and pretty much any time next week. And hundreds of acres of corn are coming out right now 2. That should shake em up.
Great job Smokey. I went out last night and set up on the wrong side of the field. Had a doe pass by on the opposite side then a possible shooter followed shortly after. I knew something was following her by the way she was walking fast. I tried to make it over to the fence line before the buck would show but I still had about 80 yards to go.
Congrats Smokey... I hope I don't regret not killing this buck yesterday morning, a week and half to go... watched a shooter tonight come behind a doe, he gave me some of the best buck vocalizations I've heard in a while!
Well after today I'm off till Wednesday to kill a buck. I hope the timing is right. I just have 1 problem. They picked a couple hundred acres of corn 3/4 of a mile down the road from my place early this week. When I drove in Wednesday night and out last night I could see dozens of sets of deer eyes out in this field. I think every deer in the neighborhood is living next to that field. I need a volunteer to chase em back my way. I won't have internet for a while, unless I get lucky, so I'm not abandanding you guys.
Good luck John! I will be doing the same, I'm heading to Ohio first thing in the morning, I plan on basically going straight to the woods. I've been talkijg to some friends up there and its sounding good, good luck to everyone in the coming weeks!
At 1115 Thursday a doe and fawn walked by. An hour later a 2.5 buck came by on their trail. I was answering the call but would not shoot as he was smaller than I am looking for. Saturday he would not be so lucky as it will be my birthday and I can't resist shooting anything 2.5 or older on my Bday.
Well I have a plan in place and so far everything falling into place. My co-hunter went down to our ground to check a few cameras. He stayed away from my hot ones, since I kicked up several bucks and doe's last weekend. the cameras he did pull had a lot of day time movement. Nothing I would shoot but who cares when your seeing deer move. this will be my "official" first sit of the year. I don't count last week, because I put no effort into simply walking behind my parents house and standing on the ground for 3 hours, even though I saw deer. I would have loved to see the pic's from the scrape in front of my 2man stand, but the risk isn't worth it. I ordered a SD to micro USB reader for my HTC ONE (phone). I'll just check it then. I'm going to get to my stand 2 hours early to give me a little time to snoop around in the dark. I may have to move my climber to another location, but we will see. I have a doe decoy that I'm contemplating bringing out with me. it's usually bad luck, as I've never seen a deer while using it.
This Saturday isn't looking as great as I had hoped. high's in the mid 60's and rain with a few thunderstorms. FML! I'm still going out and sitting all day. I just hope that there will be some breaks in the rain. Those big guys should be out and about.
Back at work today buckless. The chasing really hasn't gotten going yet in my woods. Neighbors aren't seeing much either. Saw a bunch of does and small bucks and one decent one but slow otherwise. I'll be back at it this weekend.
Had this buck at 50 yards and closing when the fickle wind changed for a split second and a doe blew the field out. We call him Tall Tines. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
Shooter just dogged some does by and in range...no openings no shot Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
Nada from Ohio for me, not sure what the remainder of the season holds for me and my bow. Rifle season opens here week after next and already in at our farm in Georgia. We will see... keep sfter it guys! Rob, good luck with tall tines!
Well fella's shot one this morning, He is a pretty small little 8, I passed him up once and he came back around and I decided after my sightings being marginal at best so far that he would make nice little euro mount. Unfortunately my shot seemed to hit a little high on qaurtering away shot, I'm going to let him lay for a few hours and then pick up the trail, wasnt blood at the point of impact but I'm pretty sure I heard a crash in the woods. Wish me luck!
