Well I almost got a doe. Stood up, turned, then my stand popped. It's coming home with me today Sent from my pocket computer using Tapatalk
Dont worry, we're not looking, its too hard trying to see around all the Pope and Youngs in front of our stands.
At least it wasn't a big buck! That's why I switched to a lone wolf this year. Good luck guys...heading out in a little bit and hopefully will get a shot at on of the five shooters I have on camera...preferably Splitz!
I saw a few deer but no Split Brow Saturday night. Putting the puzzle pieces together though. I know what trail he is using when he comes through a point on his loop. I have a couple hundred yards figured out and some more pics. Now he just needs to show up during daylight when I am in stand.
Good luck Tom! You're getting close! Crooked brow was by my stand yesterday 15 minutes before it got dark. I figured out that the only times he has been there during light times, there is a northerly wind. But im at a loss as to where to hang a stand in that draw for a north wind. The draw runs north and south Sent from my pocket computer using Tapatalk
Sorry to hear that Rizz, well a week from Monday and my season starts. Going out tomorrow after work to check cams on last time at the land near my house, and saturday to check the farm. So excited for this season!
Cole, how high do you typically hunt? Does this draw that he's running run north/south for a long distance. Do you think he's coming directly from the South walking into the wind...or does the draw you think he's coming from bend at all. What I'm trying to say is if I could get 26-32 feet high, I'd hunt a slight NW or NE wind and blow over him if possible...does that make any sense? Big bucks didn't get big by tailwinding into the wind in many cases....so I hunt the winds I know he's gonna be there or those slight winds where he's walking quartering into the wind and my scent stream is just barely missing him. Just a thought, but again without being there or knowing the spot you will know better. Good luck bud. Oh forgot this is a competition...ugh...you suck!
I usually hunt from 18 to 25 feet, but I also have a stand that's 35 feet. I can go out and try and find the tallest tree that I think he will walk by. Tall straight trees are somewhat of a wives tale around here, you can't find them anywhere. I also thought, what if I hung a stand right on the edge of the dry creek bed? Would the thermals suck my scent down there enough that he wouldn't catch my scent? Here are some pics of the draw. It doesn't look like much, but big bucks are through here all the time. the thermal trick with the creek would require an evening hunt mixed with low or variable to no wind at all so the thermals could "do their thing" IMO that'd be the best scenario if attempting that. If he's typically moving to the south of your stand location from the SE moving NW I'd say a NW wind is the tricky one I'd try if you're gut tells ya he may be moving. Your scent stream is going to be just missing him...which is where the risk comes into play. A WNW wind would be even better! I hope you get him Cole, honestly do, just wait for gun season haha!
When I was seeing him in the morning, I had a NE wind and he came from straight south. He slightly caught my scent, but he never spooked. If it had been 10 minutes later, we wouldn't be having this conversation lol. But now he has been showing up in the evenings during light. I think I might hang a stand on the very edge of the creek bed real high, then hunt with a NWish wind. Hopefully he will play nice. It will be easier to get him during bow season since I don't rifle hunt. I use a .44 mag revolver with open sights Sent from my pocket computer using Tapatalk
Good luck Tony! The app is called Cabela's Recon Hunt, and it's on my iPhone. I'm not sure if it is available for an Android, I don't see why it wouldn't be though. It was like $5 or $6. It's really handy though! Sent from my pocket computer using Tapatalk
I never got anything from him. Hopefully that means he is elbow deep in a big buck now Sent from my pocket computer using Tapatalk
