Is anyone going to be hunting during the big snow storm on Saturday? I'll probably be hunting Friday evening then Monday evening. Monday should be brutally cold. Hoping to get them deer feeding a little earlier.
Arkansas doesn't get big snow storms. Its rain for us. On the plus side, I finally have my jeep fixed. I am off for MLK day on Monday, so my plan is to get out Monday morning. Saturday is supposed to be pouring rain too hard to hunt and I have family obligations Sunday. If it doesn't flood it too bad, my plan is to go back into the river bottom I had great opportunities in back in November. I am thinking I may try just hunting from the ground and trying to stalk/scout through a section I haven't been in yet. It looks like a great bedding area.
Can't believe, I get to my spot and get out of car and locked my keys in it with everything in it. I'm waiting on a spare key to arrive. Probably won't get here til about 5. Gonna be pushing the envelope tonight. I never lock my door out here and I guess my sub conscious mind took over.
Didn't see any til I was driving away. I usually don't go mornings in the late season but I think tomorrow will be a prime morning they should be feeding heavily before this big storm hits.
Went out Saturday morning and saw 3 on the drive in. One was a shooter 8. Unfortunately when I was in the stand I didn't see any. Planning on going out Monday in the deep freeze.
I hunted this morning. I had three does run across the road right after I got back to my jeep at 10:30. Other than that nothing. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
So it was about 5:30 and I saw a group of 6 does coming down the hill to my right. It took them maybe 5 minutes to come over by me. They were all milling around behind but I had no shots. There was one big doe, 2 medium sized ones and 3 fawns. I was waiting on the bigger one to commit. Finally one of the medium sized ones came to the corn pile. Then they all started coming in. Suddenly the other 5 turned around and walked off. That startled the one out in front of me so I let her have it. By the time I shot her it was 5:45. She ran about 30 yards and did a back flip and that was all she wrote. Got one tag yet to hopefully fill. Hoping for a buck but I know my chances are pretty slim on that one. On the brighter side only one of my big ones I had on camera was shot that I know of. Should have a banner year for some really nice bucks next year.
Congrats! I really wish I lived somewhere that consistently got snow in the late season. Late season around here usually feels like November up north.
I've always loved snow and cold my whole 52 years. But it can be very challenging and brutal sitting in a stand on a 5 degree evening. If you aren't prepared for it, it will get you. These real cold snaps though are great for evening hunts. Usually from 10 to -10 if you have a corn pile you will see deer before it gets dark. That is nearly a guarantee.
Anyone else still hunting? We have one more week here in Ohio. I'm still after a buck, but if a big doe happens by the tag is going on the doe. Most big boys if they haven't dropped yet they are probably going to real soon.
I have until the end of February. Not sure if I can get back out before the contest is over. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
