I checked cams Wednesday night and things looked. We had twelve different bucks in 5 days at 3 locations, but none I would shoot. I pulled the cam where I have most of the shooters just did not want the added pressure there this time of year. I will be hitting it hard in the morning. Illini I know you are fairly close to me and with youth season, crops coming out and the weather they should be moving pretty good. Good luck & be safe.
Buddy checked his camera last night 2 miles from a property where I got a main frame 8 with two stickers on it's right brow tine and had a picture of him at 12:30 in the afternoon.
Today checked my cards. The nice 8 was right on schedule again Wednesday so I decided I'd count on that since conditions were same again I sat in my buddy's tripod stand on the edge of the field. Script played out perfect. 15 min left to shoot I heard heavy footsteps approaching. My heart racing. He stepped off the trail just as normal. He stood broadside where I could have had a little uncomfortable shot so I waited. He moved the ten feet forward to the decent shooting window. I was about to stop him and he was considerate enough to stop and strike a beautiful pose for me, almost exact to the slightly quartering away shot picture in instructional manuals. I drew back. Good breathing, calmed, everything seemed perfect. And I believe a mild misjudgment of distance mixed with a talented jump of the string led to the arrow majestically sailing just high and he trotted gracefully around the field for a victory lap to rub it in to me and walked off the other side... I'm hoping that since he was walking by the other side he wasn't too freaked out and I'll get another poke at him once things settle. On the plus side i had things figured out and pinned it down and had my shot. Now I'll go pout a little... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well another rainy and miserable Saturday morning sit!! No movement at all!! Of course it is supposed to clear up this afternoon but I can't hunt because we have a wedding to go to for my wife's cousin! I won't be back in the tree til Sunday afternoon now!! Hope you guys are having better weather!!
Hi everyone! Congratulations illinibowhunter on the doe! Sorry I haven't been on much, been working a lot. Seasons still eight days away for me. I went and checked one of my stands and there was four empty beer cans under it (not mine) so I pulled the stand out. I have another spot to check out tomorrow hopefully. Later Bob
Hey guys........well, I'm back from KC and my competitive BBQ season is finally over. Hit the stand a couple times on the edges of food plots (easy in and out) so as not to pressure much. Saw about 20 does and half a dozen small bucks over the last two days. I don't shoot does with fawns so I rarely rip one until late season. Everything at our place looks fine and I have some nice bucks on cam in daylight over the last couple weeks. We will see. I am in the stand typing this now Congrats to anyone who already scored........I am off from the 29th to Thanksgiving so I will be chasing bucks hard then.
We had an early doe only muzzleloader season here this past weekend so I'm sure having all the part time hunters stomping around the woods didn't help the bowhunters. There's still a lot of leaves on the trees and it's been windy so trying to spot a deer through the brush has been tough. I saw a 6 pointer yesterday morning and I pulled my camera card to find that my mock scrape had 29 visits by a few different bucks and does over a 7 day period. Things should get exciting in my area once the rut gets a little closer. I'm about to start using one vacation day per week from now through November, so with that plus the weekends I'll be spending more time in the stand.
Well I am off today but not able to hunt today. I am on family detail today which is cool but I did take this opportunity to do some more tuning with my broad heads from 30-40 yards. I wasn't completely satisfied with them a couple weeks ago but I feel a lot better after this morning.
I haven't been out since Saturday. Did see some smaller bucks sparring the other night and one scrape I found has been getting demolished by them. Hoping to get out Friday and or Saturday since it'll be a cold drop from this beautiful week. Had to deal with some trespassing/poaching (grouse) yesterday. Took a very calm headed approach and hoping discussion and level headed dealing works, otherwise the dnr here Woulda probably given a stack of violations, and if anything more comes up I will have him out. Not sure there's any completely right approach since it was with kids. Hoping it clears up now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So this past weekend was a complete flop for hunting. I went back to my home near Quincy IL and typically the hunting is awesome. Turns out all the corn around me is still in and neither my hunting buddy or myself saw anything. I got to spend a ton of hours staring at squirrels pondering about life's mysteries lol. I will be back out tomorrow evening. It has been a really busy week and haven't had the opportunity to get out.
Might check one of my cameras tonight. We are starting corn so my hunting will be very limited until that is over.
I will be back out tomorrow and Friday afternoon. I was going to hunt tonight but it is pouring again!! Can't get away from this rain. I was thinking about hunting Saturday morning but think I will take the morning off and go striper fishing instead!
99% sure I won't be out fri or sat as planned. Had an alumni football game last night and got my shoulder tweaked in a bad way. Icing and recovering and not seeing this weekend happening since can't raise that arm over shoulder empty let alone bow and shooting. Hoping getting the swelling down inside it will recoup without anything else. Weather won't be too impressive to hunt next week either so I'll wait til looks better anyway. Hopefully I'll heal and we'll get a cold spell again. Maybe I'll grab cards Sunday and see what I coulda seen from the stand Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I hunted last night saw to small spikes and a small doe! Two of them bedded down in front of me for well over an hour and I had one spike work over my mock scrape pretty well so that was good to see!! Now if I could get a mature buck to do that I would be in good shape! I will be back there this afternoon! Hopefully I will see a shooter!!
Well I finally get the weekend off. Should be able to get 3 hunts in. Tomorrow morning I am going to concentrate on him... Then check trail cameras if nothing happens. Britney and I will hunt Saturday afternoon in this guy's area... If no luck... Sunday morning we will go into a fun spot we like and enjoy just being there. Hopefully this guy or this guy show up for Britney... Tim
