Well having a late night at work so will not make it for the morning hunt tomorrow. But will hit the woods for the afternoon, then the morning and afternoons thursday and friday. Hopefully will be able to get a doe down. I'm not going to take a a buck off the public land this year unless its a fairly big one, im holding out for the private ground i'm going to be hitting mid-end of october, got a few nice rub lines out there that I plan on paying close attention to.
The trails are entry points to the closet stands and south of these stands across the road are all the apples and corn. Ive seen deer fall back to that forest during daylight my whole life. At night they all filter out to the surrounding fields and farms. I just have a good feeling about the back of this swamp.
has anyone seen the second episode of this years bow hunt or die?the end of it where he gets "bowhunt or die" tattooed? how can i tell that guy thats the worst tattoo ive ever seen. the quality not the actual "bowhunt or die". i feel bad for him...seriously check out how bad that tattoo is...poor sap
Not sure exactly where the apples and corn are on the map but I'd try to find a pinch point leading to that area that the deer are using. It doesn't necessarily have to be a narrow block of trees (although that is usaually a really good option) it could be a change in the terrain like steep ridge line parallelled by a flat bottom or a destinct change in the density or thickness of the understory. In my experience deer will parallel areas of really thick brush. Just like when you fish and look for change in structure because fish hold on those areas, deer will follow those changes in structure or terrain. If you can find anything that funnells the deer you'll be in business, especially while the soft mast is still available. I would hunt it while it's there. Right now around my area they are hammering the persimmons but in a few weeks they'll be gone and they'll move on to the acorns. But as long as the persimmons are available it narrows down their preferred food source and it's a good bet to be near a tree that is producing. Same goes for apples.
yea i get the way the funnels work, its how i base the majority of my scouting. thats why im sticking at the edge of this swamp. this picture is taken due north.some of the biggest bucks around are seen in these orchards. come fall they all dissappear and i think the best shot is right behind this swamp.
Here's what looks good to me. You're potential stand 3 that you've picked there that I circled looks promising and anywhere along that red line south of stand 3. Also I noted a spot on the south side of the road closer to the apple orchard and corn field. Can you hunt there? looks like a good spot. Also, possibly east of the potential stand 3 about where the n is in the word potential on the map. Those are some areas I'd check.
I'd bet the deer are still hitting the orchards and corn fields as long as there's fruit on the trees and corn available. They may go nocturnal but you should still catch them moving to and from the food for the next few weeks and then again in late season to the corn if there's any left in the fields. Looks like a great spot. I was just up your way last week in Manchester and Portsmouth New Hampshire. You've got some beautiful country up there in your neck of the woods.
that we do my friend. some of the most beautiful blocks of hardwoods ive laid eyes on. you should see it now ,within the past few days so many leaves have dropped, but back to the main subject, all the spots you marked in red are all posted hahaha. no joke, but theres a small block about a half mile south of the orchards where i plugged a big doe in muzzle loader. the two trails you marked around the triangle shaped field is like a famous health spa michael jackson visited in the 90s, which is posted but that property ends a little before where stand 3 is. theres reasons why i chose those spots haha. and also down brockleman rd. which parallells this forest to the NW are a butt load of stands. people hunt that side hard.yokles
No dice this evening fellas. Two doe and two fawns in range, but with my 2G tag, it's bucks only unless I'm in 3B.
No luck tonight for me either. Seen tons of squirrels, but not much else. Jumped a deer on my way back to the truck, he was in a no shooting zone though, then had a doe run out in front of me when I pulled out of the parking area. Have a front moving in and supposed to get rain tomorrow afternoon then a cold front, hopefully that will get them up moving in the morning, I already have my climber set up on a tree for in the morning.
Maybe he is messing with me, but he had the whisper going on and everything .... does he have a smart phone ?
Wish I could get a good nights sleep before a hunt. I fell asleep at like 10 tonight, and woke up at 1 for some unknown reason, dozed back off then woke up again at 2 and was wide awake. I was only running on 3 hours of sleep from the night before. You would think I would be worn out. Guess hunting season being here just has the blood pumping or something. Figure I might as well get up and have a good breakfast and get ready to head to the stand. Its a little warm out this morning, shows 61 right now and dropping to 58 then jumping back up to the 60s-70s today, but there is a front moving in so hopefully that gets them on their feet this morning. Good luck to any one else hitting the woods today, and be safe, remember the harnesses fellars.
I'm headed out this evening to hunt my hillside stand overlooking the trail leading to the wheatfield. Southerly wind will be right for it today.
Good luck to you! Don't know if I can get out and hunt today at all. This morning we had lightning and me being a chicken decided to to go climb a metal ladder and sit in a metal stand attached to a tree. Now, the front is moving through and the winds are pretty high. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
Would if I could find them. Was set up by 645, wind picked up at 1015-1030ish, heard thunder at 1125, climbed down and no sooner then I got my pack on my back and started walking to the truck it let loose with rain, thunder, and lightning. Tomorrow will be my last chance to hunt this week. Hopefully this front moving through and these cold temps will get em on their feet and I will see some movement. All the bean and corn fields around where I hunt are coming down, wonder if that is having an impact on movement any.
