Trust me, no one gets away without hearing an earful or two from my dad and I. A little threatening to call DNR scares the **** out of them every time. Anyone who hasn't hunted in shotgun areas doesn't understand the safety side of it in my opinion. Once slug season arrives I try to be in the tractor as much as possible because of safety and because I can watch deer/people.

Two years ago I was ripping an 80 when nature called. I was on the headlands turning but figured the middle of the field would be the best place to stop and relieve myself. Stopped the tractor and got out and halfway through I could hear numerous slugs zipping past me. Talk bout irate and scared to death at the same time. I have no place for slug hunters...

Slugs! Ha!!! You should be around here opening day of our rifle season. Nothing like hearing a .300 win mag cut the air as it passes by you at 2500+ FPS at a range of 500+ yards. I would love it if Kansas went from rifle to slug only!

5 guys firing 5 slugs each at one deer. I will take my chances with a rifle.

Alright guys! Help me make the call. Apparently the weather service can't get the forecast right even half the time.

    12 PM: S at 26 mph
3 PM: SSW at 31 mph
6 PM: SSW at 17 mph

Am I wasting my time and gas money?

I was going to sit down in a bowl where everything kind of comes together. There is a large hill to my south.....

You are crazy! Kansas allows in caliber of weapon for deer. I really hate this. You get guys driving deer with M4s, (ARs) in .223 and .308. It's like world war 3!

I would think if there is a hill to the south and wind from the south, it will come over the top of the hill basically to where your stand is and push your scent into the fields. Large bowl would typically get your scent pushed in every direction I would think.

Where do you expect the deer to come from? The west?

Let's agree to disagree that we both hate gun season as bowhunters!

Well being I have never been there I expect the deer to come from any direction other then that draw I am going to walk down from the north. (Up is south in this pic).

Is that CRP or ag fields?

How far of a drive is it?

All the dark green fields are AG. Everything to the south on top is grass. Little over a hours drive.

I'm guessing chances are pretty good everything is combined. And if the wind is pushing your scent into combined fields I would say go for it. There may be deer traveling out there but If there are they are probably going to only be chasing. With higher winds I would think they would stick to the grass and trees to your west southwest.

And at that distance I would personally do it.

Plus with a south wind you have a good entrance into the property without pushing your scent into the tress/grass.

Yah, I was more worried about the 30 mph wind. That is to my benefit getting in there and everything setup. They won't be able to hear or smell me. Just reluctant to try to set in that kind of wind!!! That and after all these years I still haven't determined really how wind effects deer movement. Been out in the wind and seen a hole lot of nothing and other times its been ok.....

You are right. I guess it will make for a good scouting trip regardless. Better then ANY day at the office! Going to grab some chow and head out!

Put your stand at the south point of that narrow strip by the green feild , where the point takes a dip down towards the green feild. You'll catch them transitioning from open feild to food and where else is there cover then your pinch point.

Heck- good luck, say in 30mph winds yesterday and seen 5 deer all day but you never know what u might see.

Hunting solo today. Perfect morning but didn't see to much so I moved stand at about 11 hoping for a little luck. High today is 43 with a slight 5-10 mpg west wind. Can't ask for much better so hoping a big boy makes his way by tonight. Gonna try to get the best footage I can but I'm not gonna let the camera save a life tonight. Clocks ticks with only two more days of vacation left.

Eating lunch and then getting out this afternoon. Keep hearing a lot of movement from people mid day. Wind is going to stay around 15 today and tomorrow. Sunday it looks like it will calm down.
