Tic Toc ... Tic Toc You guys ever watch the show the "The First 48 hours". Where if they don't solve the crime in the first 48 the probability of the crime being solved drastically decreases? So if that show was about recovering deer how many hours would you give it? The first ________ hours.... I say 18 to 24 max!

I was thinking more of Jack Bauer and 24. With the tic tocs. If you don't know Jack Bauer he is a Jason Bourne type show that used to be on and is coming back. The show relates around 24 hours of terrorist activity.

Usually less than 24 I would guess. I know of one person that found a giant buck last year 2 days later.

    No deer.

Spent four hours last night and three hours today looking. It is pouring rain here with 30 mph winds. I am soaked and cold.

I don't know right now. I think I know the ten acre patch he is in, but it is the absolute gnarliest combination of dead trees and giant grass canopy that you could draw up. Finding blood won't be an option. This is probably the most rain we have gotten since July.

My last option will be to come back on Friday and watch for birds. Hopefully the carcass draws in some crows or buzzards. The deer is absolutely dead somewhere, I know the shot was good. However, he is either floating down the river or curled up under a tree somewhere in Vietnam like stuff.

I've never lost a deer before. I feel physically sick because of it. I wish I would have completely missed him, or blew out his shoulders, or spined him. I'm at an all time low right now.

That's a heart breaker for everyone. I have lots of questions for you! How big you think he is?

If you spined him he wasn't going anywhere. Did you get good penetration? Do you think it was high shoulder or behind it? How far did he run before he was out of sight? How long did you wait to look for him? How much blood did you find? Did you find your arrow? How far is the river from where you shot him? How deep and what is the flow like? How wide is it? Did you visually see him or hear him hit the water? Did you see him cross? Lot of times they will hit the water and then realize they are in trouble and back track. If he made it across what is the terrain like on the other bank? Is it steep? Any visual sign on the other side, blood, tracks or other?

Upload a pic of the area, stand location, and path you think he ran! Include some GPS coordinates from Google Earth so I can look at it using your upload image as a reference!

I would be taking my dog, my friends, and their dogs for a walk as soon as you can!

I think he was in the 130s. I didn't spine him, I wish I would have spined him is what I was saying. Complete pass through. Not guts, definitely liver. My stand is about 20 yards from the river. He ran about 50 yards, stopped for maybe 20 seconds, ran another 10 yards to the river bank and jumped in. I watched him walk almost all the way across the river. The last I could see him he was about 15 feet from the other bank. The river is probably 90 feet wide. The Jim River is considered one of the slowest flowing rivers in the world.

There was great blood on my side of the river. No foul smell to my arrow, dark blood, definitely liver. I tracked him perfectly fine on my side of the river, if he wouldn't have crossed it would be game over. I waited three hours before going out. I planned on waiting until morning, but rain was coming at 2 am so I went after him at 10 pm.

The terrain on the other side is absolutely wild. This area gets flooded often, so there is a ton of dead timber. This year we got a lot of rain so this area is overgrown with grasses over 10 feet tall.

Sounds like its shallow and safe to say he made it across. Although ideally I think you went after a tad early (completely understandable with the weather)I doubt you pushed him. I think he was probably dead last night when you went after him. I'd say he is probably within a couple hundred yards of were you last saw him if its as thick as it is. Was the wind blowing last night? Assuming it was blowing across the river? Did you try to be quiet as you tracked him? Ever hear anything once you were on the other side?

I snuck out of my stand, but when we started tracking him at 10 being quiet wasn't an option because of the timber. The wind was blowing, but the riverbottom is pretty sheltered from wind. It was not blowing across the river. I couldn't hear anything on the other side.

Any blood that was there is definitely gone. Last night I marked areas that had heavy blood on my side and today I couldn't see the blood when I was standing right on top of the markers.

Last week there was a dead deer in the area that had a buzzard circling above him with a hawk already perched on him. I am hoping I can get something similar when I go out again.

Damn Boof, I hope u find him! Heckler is definatly asking all the right questions, too bad we couldn't all come out and help u stomp the place flat. Judging by what u described, I would say hes definatly a dead deer.

As for me, I got outta work early today. I haven't been in the stand since Wednesday. On my way out right now, hopefully I get something in shooting range. If I get a shot at a doe tonight I`ll take it, I`ve got the next 2 days off so I can cut it up and get it into the freezer. On a brighter note, my nefew got his first deer yesterday, a small 6 pointer!

The whole situation is just the perfect storm for NOT finding a deer.

Him jumping in the river made it hard to find blood after he crossed. The biggest rain we have had in months is currently happening. The area he crossed into is literally the roughest ground I have ever stepped foot on.

Sorry to hear about your loss, whats the forcast for the next few days there? Hopefully not rain and there fore casting sunny! Rain will keep the smell down so the birds will keep clear for a bit but if it's sunny you can bet there'll be birds circling and yotes yelping. Good luck finding him ,and get some rest ,you'll need it if your to figure this one out! .
On a side note I had 2 does come in and I drew on the one @5 yards and said to myself she looks a bit small. I was right, she was this years fawn to the other. LMAO, I almost blew a tag on a little deer! .I got new batteries in my TC"s and made 2 scrape lines and won't be back in there till Pre Rutt, 1st week of November Baby!!!!!!!
