He's not the biggest buck in the world, but it was a really cool hunt. I ran my climber up a tree just off the corner of a cornfield. Had 2 does come by me at 25 yards, but just didn't like the shots offered. Just after 6 PM, I saw some saplings being thrashed around, and caught a glimpse of antler. Once he was done abusing the trees, he came right out by me...obviously staging before heading to the field. I shot him at 17 yards, slightly quartering away. I felt pretty good about the shot, but since I din't hear him go down, I backed out and went back in with lights a couple of hours later. Montecs did their job...he was less than 100 yards away from my stand. Anyway, enough rambling. I'll try to get him entered tomorrow.
Size doesn't matter near as much as experience an fun congrats man Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Congrats O! I will be heading out tomorrow to the western part of Wisconsin. Hopefully we don't get to much rain. I am also looking forward to checking a cam that has been out since early August. I haven't been in that spot since. T
Heading out tonight and then tomorrow morning! Won’t be back in the woods after these two hunts till Oct 26. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums

Damn it I was almost on the board last Friday evening with a absolute monster. I had him at 30 yards but the problem was he was hot on the trail of a doe. He was running and I knew there was no way to stop him so I didn't want to risk getting busted. Talk about a heart thumper! Then about 6pm It started to rain lightly so I decided to put up my tree umbrella. As I am doing this I hear a noise behind me and turn to see a doe right under my stand at 5 yards. Needless to say she slowly just walked away. Saturday had me on the stand a good hour and half before first light. At 6:39 (I have the game cam pic) I hear a deep exhale which sounded more like a bear to me. Then I hear the ever familiar grunt and this dude grunts all the way to my ladder stand with almost rubbing against it. It was still to dark to get a shot off and didn't really see his head hear. I sure had some exciting times out at my parents place in Wisconsin. I can't wait to get back there in 2 weeks. I will upload some pics including the one that ran by me that I did manage to get 3 seconds of video with my phone. The pic from it does no justice.
Public Land Recap- Had a great time on my public land hunt this past weekend. We hunted hard and tried to figure it all out in two days but it was too stinkin hot. Ended up not seeing a single deer. Heard a few blow though way downwind. We came home early to hunt one of my private properties and had 5 on top of us in the last half hour of day light. One small buck at ten yards and what looked to be a good buck way out in the field. Today the temps dropped 20 degrees so I’m headed out to the stand tonight. Thought I’d let you guys know my hunting group is putting out weekly devotionals every Monday of deer season this year on Instagram and Facebook. We are talking about the “Early Season” right now. Just search sheddinglightoutdoors if you’re interested. Hope you guys are having a fun season, ruts coming soon!!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Had this buck at 10 yards last night. The story: My stand faces to the south west along a ridge/uncut bean field. 13mph wind out of the north west. I was looking to my right (north) scanning the bottom woods for movement by the time I circled back to my south west he was on top of me. Rather than going down the path that would have given me a shot he cut into the woods... No shot. My delima: Would I shoot this buck in November? Yes probably. Would you shoot this buck in October? I don’t really know - I think I should have passed on him kinda glad the decision was made for me. My justification: It’s 6:20 p.m. on October 15. I’ve got another month + of good movement and bucks like this are a dime a dozen on this property. I saw 15 deer last night, 2 small bucks, 12 doe and that buck. On this property I shot and didn’t find a buck of this caliber last year. My buddy shot and killed a buck of this caliber last year on the property. I found a different expired buck while shed hunting this year, again same caliber. All this between 2 hunters and approximately 25 total hunts. I’ve got to be selective until I can’t afford to be selective. Outcome: I didn’t have a chance to shoot anyway so none of this really matters. I wish I had seen him coming so I coulda been ready - I probably would have let an arrow fly.
I would have taken him but I'm not usually picky lol. We don't have the size of deer in my part of texas that some back east have Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
I’d say you’ll know when he comes by. If he does t make you stand up, then don’t worry about him. Last year I had a good 10 point walk in. But he was young and didn’t make me stand up. I kept wondering if I should shoot him. And then it hit me, if I have to ask that question then I probably shouldn’t. It also depends on what your standards are and what you’ve killed before. Had all four members of our team out tonight in different spots. Saw a lot of deer and a buddy got 45 minutes of two bucks fighting. Can’t wait to see that footage. Another buddy missed a doe with his recurve. I just saw two way out in the field. Lots of action though. Good luck guys. The rut is coming soon. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Finally heading back to the woods this weekend, but the wind is going to be bad for most of my stands until Sunday morning so I'll probably only be able to hunt then unless the wind changes. I've got a few days of vacation time coming up over the next couple weeks, I'm hoping I timed the rut perfectly this year. Can't wait to get back out into the woods! Good luck to anyone else hunting this weekend.
