I had a really cool encounter last night when a small 5 point walked under my tree and started feeding 20 yards away for about 25 minutes. A coyote was approaching and at 50 yards stopped to survey the buck who also was looking at him. The buck made a popping sound with his mouth and walked right over to meet the coyote. He stopped 10 yards from the coyote and they stared at each other for a few seconds when something got their attention to the east of them. They stood there, 10 yards apart looking at whatever it was, for a good 10 seconds. They looked back at each other and the buck walked very deliberately right at the coyote who retreated about 10 yards and laid down. Satisfied, the buck walked back over to where he had been eating and made a scrape, peed in it, grabbed a few more bites and walked again under my stand from the direction he had come. The coyote laid there for about 10 minutes. I lip squeaked a couple times and he raised his head but laid back down. I had a branch in my way so I never had a shot. He was exactly 50 yards. About that time a coyote howled in the creek bottom behind him and then another and then a third. The dog jumped to his feet, howled back and then took off on a run to meet them. It was super cool to witness nature in action.
Haha. Seriously! That was quick. KY is awesome and I sat in the "ol faithful" stand! It has been good to me for years! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
First hunt back in Kentucky. I planned to hunt all week. It was 28 degrees and barley any wind from the SW, which was perfect. I had a spike come in from behind me and stopped at about 10 yards broadside. I was planning to shoot anything, but it was the first 15 minutes of the first hunt, and I decided not to shoot a spike. About 20 minutes later at 0650, I hear something behind me that sounds like a deer. It was a small 8 point buck and he was coming from the pond going uphill entering the woods behind me. You could hear every step he made due to the frost on the ground. He followed the same trail that the spike took. I had him slightly quartered away at 10 yards and let my arrow fly! It was a complete pass through. He did a jump kick and then very slowly walked away. He walked about 30 yards total in almost a complete "U" shape and fell right back in front of me. He ended up weighing 155# and had a 10" spread. He wasn't my biggest deer, but it was probably my favorite bow kill hunt ever due to how perfectly everything played out and how much time I invested this year. I quartered him out in the barn and took him to the processor to get made into snack sticks and summer sausage. He is gonna eat well! My 5 year old daughter already wants me to shoot another one so we can get more deer meat. She loves it! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Knew it was only a matter a time and the waiting would pay off USAF. Land sounds great there. Congrats man on the meat and points!
Also, I see the photos in Live From the Stand and that's a great shot with the kids all in it too! Awesome!
Thanks. Yeah, it feels good to contribute some points for the team. Let's keep it going y'all! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Blind is all set for tomorrow. Started off as far away from the parking lot as I could get, but ran into another hunter. Backtracked a bit and ran into another. Ended up in the spot my camera was hanging, so at least I know deer come through there. There’s hiking trails throughout this area as well as mountain biking trails. Needless to say the deer are used to people. Hoping a buck walks by tomorrow, but I’d settle for a doe too!
