Tony I cant get you to come here to shoot a deer. I didn't think you would want to come here for a wedding ;) lol. JK bud, very small ceremony. Just about 20 people, all family, small and laid back. I would have liked to invite more, but the cabin owners limited the numbers greatly.

I had three deer come in last night. Two of them were directly under my stand. They were little maybe 50lbs. Then what I thought was mom, she wasnt much bigger maybe 70 lbs. She hung back near the thick stuff. She did come out to the mock scrape I made, she sniffed it. Was it mom or big sister? No other deer came out of that area.

Any ideas? I thought about killing her but she was to small:argue:

Glad to hear your seeing some. I haven't seen one since opening morning, but it is super early yet and finally getting the wind direction I need for some better stands.
A little doe with twins seems hard to beleive, but not impossible. My complete guess would be big sister or button buck that you couldn't see the nubs yet.
My dad saw one with spots on it yet just the other day. Crazy late for that around here.

I seen a doe Saturday night come in about 25 yards. She have a SMALL fawn with her. The fawn had a lot of spots and light orange coat. Seems pretty late for this fawn. Hope it survives. Don't ever remember seeing one this late. Lookes like the ones I got on the trail cames back in june.

Who has used a decoy before? And when do you typically start using it?
My hunting buddy and I are going to try the 'Boss Buck' decoy this year, his property in WI seems ideal for it. Last year, we were successful in calling/rattling in bucks on numerous occasions, we are hoping with the decoy that it adds something to the puzzle to get in the big boys plus it just seems like a ton of fun to hunt over one. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks guys.

I've used decoys before with good success. Mine is a flambeau model from the 1980's. I picked it up at an auction for $5 several years ago. Touched up the paint on the face and at 30 yds it looks like the real deal. I use it when the mood hits but it works. Set it up upwind so the deer ( bucks ) circle it without catching your scent. Mine is a doe decoy but I'm sure buck decoy set ups are much the same.

I have pre-rut and rut. I killed my first bow buck over a decoy, it was actually a mckenzie target. I have 2 decoys now that are both does. I have seen many situations using decoys and not all are positive. I have had a lot of deer spook and blow when I have used decoys on deer that came in that I didn't want to shoot. I have also had them come in the morning with not enough light to shoot and then spook. I have found the best use for me is when I am hunting areas with low deer density. Tree lines, ditches, etc. They do work. At the start of September we leave are decoys outside 24/7 for scent purposes. If it is really windy make sure you bring an extra stake or 2. Using urine with them helps. Noise can be an issue. Mine are hard plastic and the head and legs can be taken down, although I would not. I make sure mine are very tight and put my left arm in the cavity and carry that way. Make damn sure you are walking in a way that the decoy is not rubbing or hitting debris. It can be very noisy. I will not take mine in an area where I would make that kind of noise and putting it together in the field in my opinion is too noisy.

I find this quote really interesting. I hunt in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the deer numbers are really low, so to hear that you find it to be effective in these types of areas is pretty exciting. Thanks again and i'll let you guys know who things work out.. I'll start using it as soon as I start to seeing rubs and scrapes popup.

Going after sikas this weekend. Have a big 5 pt stag that keeps showing up late at night but rut is kicking in and big stags are moving more during the day. Kinda torn because if I kill him he won't score much compared to whitetails but he is a hoss for sikas.

I have used both buck and doe decoys and really like hunting over them both bow and gun hunting. Make sure you are using it in an open area because you can really scare some deer if they get surprised by it.
