Don't sweat it, Rob. It happens to everybody. I'd bet your shot was true, she just hit the deck. If they're on edge, they can drop almost a full bodyheight in the time it takes your arrow to get there. They're amazing animals. Built to survive. Get back in the saddle, and it'll happen.
It was quite amazing. I think her chest actually touched the ground. Not discouraged, it happens. I'm pretty happy with how my first 4+ years of hunting have gone so far. I'll be back out Saturday.
PT's communion wine is a little stout and we don't pass little cups or dip the bread we pass the bottle.
Then you have Siman, who hasn't shot a deer since the invention of the internet. . . He makes out with 3 chicks, posts the pictures, and now the little bastard is talking all kinds of smack. In other news, I finally checked cameras today on our foodplots. The good news is, every deer in hell's halfacre is in there. The bad news is that it's overrun with doe families and scrubracks. I kinda knew that going in. We basically own and operate a doe sanctuary. It's awesome during the rut, but early October is slim pickings. Here's the best buck I got in the foodplots... For now. You can see, they've got it mowed down pretty low. It's like a barnyard. I've got a few pics of some bigger guys elsewhere, but not much during daylight hours. I was absolutely shocked to see 5 DIFFERENT BUCKS STILL IN VELVET! A couple decent ones, too. In addition to the two pictured below, I had a spike, 2x3 and forkhorn that were still sporting velvet.
Word on the street is that DVFD236 is the only child of the largest landowner in the state of Iowa. His family owns over 53,000 acres, all of which they just leave alone, unhunted, to serve as an animal sanctuary. DVFD is looking to connect with some new friends, as he doesn't know anyone else who hunts who can help him control his buck population, which has become out of control. True story.
I could help him kill some of those deer! I live in Iowa and would be glad to put my free time helping out a fellow hunter
Well, this little bunny got skunked yesterday. I hate to bumble around the woods looking for a place to hunt them, but we're seeing a lot of activity on the field edge scrapes (night), so I intruded a bit to try to get between bedding and feeding, and my goodness, I found a fantastic new stand site. I hunted it, but the wind was ass-backward, which I think contributed to them spending more time on their bellies. It's a classic hub-and-spoke saddle system, with a massive scrapeline running right down the middle. Great spot. I'll get in there again.
Fran, got some good ones there. Velvet would surprise me too at this time of year. IN my experience, it's rare to get pictures in velvet past Sept. 10. My scrapes were pretty quiet this week. We'll see what the opener holds. You anyone hunting during the week this week?
I have the whole week off work, so I will have lots of time to be in the stand. Been out 5 times now, and seen deer 2 of those times. Have yet to see horns tho.
I'll be out for the VA opener this Saturday. Temps look fantastic as of now. High of 60 low of 42! I haven't hunted an opening day that cool ever.
Temperature Saturday has dropped 6 degrees since I checked it earlier this morning. Looking forward to a nice cool fall day in the woods
Where about are you hunting in VA? Temps down here in the South Eastern part look real good also, but not quite that low. You must be a little farther West.
