I got out yesterday afternoon and had an exciting sit. I ended up sneaking up on two does standing 5 feet from my tree on my way in, I didn’t see them until I was about 20 yards away. They spooked and took off running. With about an hour left of light I had a great encounter with a nice 2.5 year old buck. He came into my shooting lane at about 25 yards but he got the pass. He will be a very nice buck in the next couple seasons if he makes it. I’ve only had three sits so far this season and I’ve seen an abundance of deer. The bucks have been on their feet in the early season, something I’ve RARELY seen. I think I can attribute that to my lack of presence in the woods. So far this is the best season for buck activity I’ve ever witnessed, and it’s only the second week of October. I may get out one more time between now and the last weekend of October, but after that, I’ll be hitting the woods hard.
I can tell you in my area I have noticed a very big difference when I have been patient for excellent weather and when the pre-rut really gets going. Simply not leaving scent in your area while other people are hunting and leaving scent and pushing them around helps a lot. It’s impossible to be “scent free” in my opinion the deer nose is just too good. It is now calling for rain tomorrow afternoon not sure I’m going to want to do a rain sit just yet we will see what my cameras show when I mow paths today for hopefully the last time. I’m headed to the woods! Going all in for this guy. And never know what else could show up in this area. It’s a so-so wind but where he should be bedding he won’t be able to get me until it’s to late Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums

Nothing over the weekend, I did have a young 8pt following 2 doe around. He stopped 5 feet from the base of the tree I was in and made his way over to one of the doe that didn't run off. I thought I had been winded when the two doe started to blow, but it wasn't hard blowing, just kind of like, leave me alone sounds. Around 9 am I went and moved an old stand to a new spot and sat there until noon, saw the same buck and that was all. I'm heading to Illinois on Friday, hopefully, I can stick a big ol Illinois buck.
Here too, there has only been 1 sit where I have not seen a deer. Fairly confident this is going to be a good year.

Well, the farm I was going to hunt has a lease so I'll be on public land. However, the spot I'm going is next to basically a high fence farm that is only fenced on 3 of the 4 sides. Illinois wouldn't let the guy fence all of it off, so I'll be on the public land in some travel lanes. Fingers crossed the deer decide to wander into my spot. This is the type of deer on that property, fingers crossed I get a chance at one like this. I'll probably crap my pants, shake unconformably and completely miss though.
I had a cool encounter last night. Saw 3 doe but they were about 10 yards farther than I wanted to shoot. I climbed down and the neighbor sees a coyote in the field. I say I'll stay where I'm at, take a shot. He takes shot from his driveway and misses with his .17. Oh well, well at that same time, a nice tall 8 point steps into the field. I get into a low spot of the field and stalk to the back of the field and, bam, I'm 20 yards from this buck. The stinking wind that was hiding my movement completely died out, I go to take a shot and completely leaves and my movement got me busted. Almost had a nice buck from the ground. Very cool experience, only the second time I've ever been able to stalk that close to a buck.
It may only count for 50 points on the board, but we all know that was a 100 point hunt! Congrats on the double!
