Checking in. My name is Justin. I hunt and live in NE Iowa. We have a century farm I hunt mainly and another small farm that we have started hunting since some trees have developed. I work as an insurance agent which is nice for hunting in the fall because I'm self employed and take a lot of afternoons off to sit in a stand if weather is good for bucks to be on their feet. Going out to Colorado in 4 weeks for elk hunting with my dad. I won't be hunting, but helping my dad on his first elk hunt. Hoping to bring some elk and bear pictures to the group end of September. I just want to eat a big old elk backstrap. 3 guys have black bear tags out of 4 people. Planted some brassica at both farms recently and it is really doing well. Rape and turnip. Going to get a couple cameras out but trying to run no cameras in our main hunting area to create less pressure. Not sure if it will make a difference, but trying a couple new things this year. Love the name and I'm good with captain being Virginia. I'll be on here too much now that I know we have a team. My biggest variable for a big buck besides them being smarter than me will be my dad over hunting our small area. He is semi-retired and I'm hoping he sticks a buck early. Haha. I shot a smaller one last year that was wounded. Prior year ate my tag. Hope to always get a doe early. Good luck to all this year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A couple blinds with pictures of the brassica we just planted. Planted 5 days apart. The early planting got rain right away and is a bottom with really good soil. The other plot planted 5 days later waited for rain. Still coming in nicely. Been planting these the last two years and this is earliest we got in. Deer should love them. They're all over the place here. I pass them more than I shoot them but I've shot a few. One of the property owners has a trapper who takes the pelts.
They "re-introduced" coyotes here in ne TN a few years back I killed one so far luckily my main spot I hunt doesn't seem to have much sign of em. Just got a 900 acre lease this year and so far I've had as many as 5 at one time on the camera so I'm hoping to take a few more this year Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Early doe season starts here in a few weeks. Lasts a month then the general bow season starts on Oct 7th. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Hey guys feel free to post maps and talk hunting strategy. Combined, I'm sure we could all give each other good advice to help up the odds of shooting deer. I scouted hard this off season from Jan to March. My public land spot allows scouting to begin again in Sept. I'm gonna scout for a couple days in Sept then get out and probably not return to many of those spots for 2 months. Get the pressure off. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
This is the land I have been hunting all my life it is a small lot that holds deer until the end of November but the main plan is to hunt acorns early and there is a funnel that all the deer travel through during the rut so that will be the hot spot.
And then this is a piece of public land I am really interested in especially the back half in the timber because I know the pheasant hunters really pressure the open fields.
Virginia. You near Blue Ridge mountains at all? Sister lives in Staunton. Pretty place. Was always curious what type of hunting was there. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I live by and hunt on Quantico Marine base. It is full of steep terrain for these parts. Not as steep as yours, but it is full of old ravines and hillsides. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
My good friend has land in Virginia that I hunt every once in a while Southeast Virginia I'm about 30 minutes from Southeast Virginia and 45 from Western North Carolina
I'd be willing to bet that valley to the West of the swamp will pay dividends given a late October cold front with a N/NNW/NW wind. Check out that ridge. You can probably catch them moving from the fields to the swamp in the morning. Hang a set in the top quarter of the ridge with those conditions and your scent will stay out of the bedding and the bucks will be seeking high ground to scent check the swamp.
That was my though I figured that western corner is gunna be the spot any idea what the access looks like over there? if I can park by the road over there it would make the hike a lot easier.
I was able to catch this guy in a similar situation. October 26th, temps went from 60ish daytime high to a 28 degree low. I hunted a ridge about 3/4 of the way up and he came checking doe trails at about 9. Shot him at 13 yards.
