Only had a little fawn in range tonight bedded at 25 for and hour then mom came out and the walked off good night for me! Sent from my iPod touch using Bowhunting.com Forums
That's cool to see. I've never had a deer bed near my fortunately. I think I'd be paranoid I couldn't get out lol. I'd like to head out in the morning but I'm not sure where. We're supposed to get a NE wind and it seems like every stand I hunt I always wish I had an E wind. But now that I'm looking at maps it doesn't work for many of them. I have some area in mind but I'll be winging it in the dark. We have a Tropical Storm watch from Jose so this storm may get the deer moving some.
Well that was an eventful sit. Had nothing at all show up until the end. With 10 mins left of shooting lint I spotted my number 1 buck about 200 yards away. He ended up walking right under me in the pitch darkness. This buck has avoided both me and my cameras for 2 years now and I've only had a handful of encounters with him. He is by my guess all of 170 as a clean 10 point. Sadly I won't be back to that farm until mid October. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Go to the public land if you are worried about winging it in the dark. Pick a point where you think they will bed and set up early. Better than not hunting!
I came out to one of my private properties. I have a stand out here that is good for this N/NE wind. The downside is there isn't a ton of activity in the general spot. Best case scenario, I catch the buck I've been chasing for the last 3 seasons, worst case scenario I got to hunt a storm front. Haven't seen anything yet. It rained last night and I can't even hear the squirrels running around because the ground is wet. It's thick here too so I could look up and have a deer in range. Eyes back to the woods.
As you know I hunted yesterday morning. Nature made an emergency call at around 7:30 and I damn near sprinted out of the woods. Thank God I was in a ladder stand. I hadn't seen anything so I wasn't too worried. After I did my thing I followed a logging road around the back side of my stand that kept me down wind of it and still hunted in case anything was moving. I crept up within 30 yards of a big ol' mature doe. I watched her feed for 3-5 min and just observed. She was about 50 yards from where I was in the stand but I wouldn't have been able to see her because of the terrain. I stepped on a twig and she heard it and bolted and snorted without even looking to see or smell what I was. Once I made the loop on that logging road I headed home. For the afternoon I had a NE wind again. I headed to my prime property and I was really excited to hunt. My buddy has a camera set up there and he hunted the opposite end of the property. He pulled his card and got some decent bucks on camera. Nothing too recent however. If I were to sum up my hunting the last few days into one word it would be "lazy". I've been taking short cuts I know I shouldn't be taking and I need to buckle down. I've been excited for the season to be here so I've been hunting marginal winds/stands and I need to pull it together. So from now on my locations and access are going to be better planned. I don't want to ruin my Pre-Rut/Rut hunts before they even get here.
30 yards on a mature doe and didn't take the shot? Forget your bow or didn't wanna drag her butt out of the woods? Sent from my iPod touch using Bowhunting.com Forums
I have a freezer that I convert to a fridge to hang the deer quarters when it's hot like this. Right now it's got a bunch of pheasant and ducks in it. I'm waiting for my wife to clean out the kitchen freezer to move stuff upstairs. I'll clean it out myself for a buck but it's not worth it for a doe lol.
Hey teammates, I'm not getting notification of any posts from any of the forums I frequent. So if it seems I'm missing in action here, I'm not ignoring anyone. I don't know how to fix the issue. Blessings...........Pastorjim Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
