Wanna tell him how close he was, Dan? :)

Try 17 yards broadside with nothing between him and me!!

Note to self: Do not grunt a couple times at sparring bucks in the distance three minutes before you have light enough to shoot just to "hold them in the area"...

Note to self: Do not grunt a couple times...

    Note to self: Do not...

I'm sitting up close to the point of where a slough ends... it's 70 yards across out in front of me, and ends just to my right as I'm looking at it.

Across the water, while it's still pretty dark, I hear antlers tinkling together... I even texted Tony back from one of his earlier messages and tell him I've got a pair of yearlings out in front of me feeling their oats.

A few minutes later, it's starting to get JUST light enough to see the leaves on the ground fairly good, and I hear the bucks start up again -- but this time they've made it past the slough and they're out in the CRP which is just past where the woods ends 60 yards past the water. They're a bit more aggressive this time, and it sounds like a bit bigger bone... hard to describe, but it got me interested this time.

If they continue on their path of where I've heard the last couple sparring sessions, they'll be way away the next time they hook up -- so I think about "keeping them in the area"... after all, I only need a couple more minutes and it's go-time.

A couple soft grunts in their direction was intended to just keep them hanging around... Nope. Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch...

30 seconds later, I'm looking at a 130-ish or better stud 17 yards in front of me followed by a 120-ish or so guy. I needed maybe two more minutes. :(

Thanks gents, well now in excited  I was looking at the vacation schedule at work that I havent looked at in awhile, I forgot I had more vacation time :tu: SO now in off for 19 days straight starting Thursday. I would of had 20 off but they are making me come in on the first day for a mandatory training day. Oh well its easy overtime. Good luck team, Here it looks like bad weather rolling in in the next day or so but im glad. I have never seen this area as dry as it is. There are water holes and creeks that are completly dried up that seem never to even drop level :( walking in the woods at this point sounds like walking on an empty sun chip bag  I hope to see you guys have sucess this season but most of all have fun ;)

Someone turn a light on last week as I went and checked my cam before my sit and had a lot of bucks. Oct 18th and 22nd were the magic days with a couple being pretty decent. As for me I did
not see anything but at least the cam is showing daylight movement now. I probably will not be out again until Thursday due to these historic winds they are predicting and have actually started in my area of Wi. Friday is a washout my grams passed last Thursday so were having a service.
When Sat gets here I may be MIA for awhile or just posting during my 3rd shift hours at work.
I believe im still going to get it done. Feel free to text me 262-206-8507. T

    Amazing.

My boy and I turn down the gravel road leading to the farm we're going to hunt; there's already a big doe out in the cut corn field a hill over from our blind.

We park and make our way to the back fencerow where the blind's brushed in against a little strip of standing corn... WAS brushed in being the operative word. We crest the hill, and there's my blind, sitting all by its lonesome. The farmer cut every stock of corn around it, and the blind is now 30 yards away from the strip of standing corn.

He's not really a hunter (typical gun hunter who picks up a gun once a year), so he knows nothing about the philosophy of brushing blinds in or anything... probably thought he was doing me a favor by "opening it up"... even if I had went to all the trouble to nestle it in there, LOL.

So my boy carried the chairs and I pick up the blind from the inside and walk it down to the strip of corn and we work on brushing it back in for 10 minutes or so...

Of course we didn't see anything tonight. At least I did share some more awesome time with him.

Peak, sorry to hear for your loss, prayers are sent out to your and your family.

Greg, I think that getting involved in sport with someone you love being around is awesome, regardless of success. My dad doesn't deer hunt, but I enjoy every opportunity I get to go duck/goose/turkey/pheasant hunt with him.

As for me, it's been so windy here it's almost not worth going out. I was out a few days ago and put 100 lbs of corn out. Checked the trail cam 3 days later and had some pictures and videos of a few deer that were moving through the woods (before I put the camera on the corn) and it looks like one may be a pretty large buck. Hard to tell on the camera's viewing screen. If that even makes sense? I had the camera in one location and then forgot an SD card so I moved it and then when I was back out I again forgot an SD card so I couldn't tell any pictures from the corn or the prior location. Anyhow, I now have an SD card in my wallet, just waiting for an opportunity to go out and grab the camera. Maybe tomorrow or friday. :D But don't count on getting me up in a treestand when there are 30 mph winds. :D

........but the rut is going to be here soon, and if the temperatures keep dropping, I will get up. Don't worry guys. I'm trying, I'm trying! ;D

Took a doe fawn this morning... It's the first shot I've taken so far this fall, I am happy to have her meat. I was completely out. Her bb brother led the way, coming from behind me. After he passed by I decided to take her. She was quartering away at about 20 yards slowly following the bb down the trail away from me. The arrow passed through and exited through the off shoulder.

.................REWIND though to 10 minutes before I took this deer. I basically had the moment I've waited for since I started going at it with a bow. The biggest buck I've ever had on my cams appeared from up the ridge. This is the first time I've seen him without velvet. He was following another doe fawn from the way I came, sniffing the ground from tinks doe in estrus I sprayed on the bottom of my boots before I walked in. I truly thought I was going to have a shot as he closed the distance to 30 yards. If he would have continued coming 6 or 7 more feet down the ridge I would have had a perfect broadside shot. He stopped behind a spot where it was way too thick to shoot . He started to move again and I drew back, and next thing I know the gig was up. The doe fawn spooked, then he did. He ran up the ridge and away, looking like a cow with huge antlers... I can't stop thinking about how it was the second I looked up the ridge and saw the monster coming towards me. That is literally the 1st time I've ever had a deer like that within bow range. It was insane. I was definitely still shaking from the buck, when the little doe came in and I took her. All I can think about is those antlers... I still can not believe what happened. Ahhhh!

Great doe. Be happy about that. You'll get another chance for the big Guy.

I'm out again tonight. Hopefully something moves... I'm tired of only seeing deer on trail cam...

well i put in a hard week of hunting this week, rifle season opened and the pressure around me really shut things down for me, of the 3 bucks coming to my stand i know of 1 that was killed, and i had two people pop up stands and bait fairly close to me, i haven't seen or even got a picture of a buck since the gun season started.
i have a doe and fawn at my stand location all day and night they were fun to watch but in a province with a buck only law it just made me hungry...lol
i guess i should have planned my vacation for bow season, nobody around here bow hunts and it was a lot easier, just wish now i would have been in the stand that week instead of looking at pictures of the bucks....lesson learned for next year.
i'll get up to the camp for a few more days here and there before the seasons ends in 3 weeks but it's looking like tag soup for me!
