This has me excited. Might get some deer up earlier with lows in the 40's where I'm at. Waiting until weekend to hunt with the better weather. Trying not to burn out our farm early....I believe I did that with one of my stands last year. One will be saved for November for first sit depending on weather. Hoping for a doe this weekend.

So my opening weekend was less than thrilling. Long story short....Have hunted a property since I was a little kid and have known the neighbors around me just as long. On the 1st had a big doe come in by herself. Ended up shooting her quartering away and smoked her. Only concern is that she jumped the fence and died in some standing corn on the neighbors property.

So there is where the story turns and I was in the wrong. I should have gone up and asked for permission to walk through the standing corn and find my deer. Instead I hopped the fence and found good blood in the field. It was dark and I wanted to grab my dad and hunting buddy.

Well little did I know that the part of the field I was in is extremely narrow and I walked in on the neighbors kid who was hunting close by. So as I was walking out I got chewed on by the son. I was extremely apologetic since I was in the wrong. He said he dad was waiting at the end of my drive. Got chewed on again by him. Once again very apologetic. Ended up telling me not to step foot on their property.

I mentioned there was a dead doe laying in their field. He said he didn't care and to stay off of it. So needless to say I was extremely bummed out one that I should have handled the situation differently and two that I killed a big doe and was not able to retrieve it.

The whole situation really bummed me out and it took some of the wind from my sails. Certainly was not the way I wanted to start my season. Hoping for better things this weekend.

I can fully understand them being upset (you understand that also) because I know I would be if someone walked up on me while hunting.

That being said, after explaining and apologizing, they should have helped you get that deer.

Emotions could be high because you wait all year to hunt and you try to pattern bucks and work your land a certain way.

I'd try to make amends but not force it

That's too bad. I really hate the idea of wasting an animal. Coyotes will get to it though.

I would try approaching another time after they have cooled off and apologize again. If they can't accept it then move on.

I tell you what it is a rough start here in Illinois...I went out yesterday evening which probably will end up being the warmest hunting day this season (mid 80s) and wasn't expecting much. But I heard something coming through the bean field. Sure enough two nice does were making their way to me. After about 15 minutes of walking in a circle around me, I had a chance at 30 yards, but they were in my wind and not enjoying it. I shot and went right underneath here. I am thinking she was more like 35 and just went over.

I suppose this is why we call it hunting :)

They can jump the string too. Especially if they were alert as you described. You might have hit where u wanted.

I've never aimed low before, but I will in the future on anything over 30. 40 is about max for me with a deer though.

Well Guys I couldn"t get to the woods till almost 6:30 tonight so rather than set a stand I slipped into the corn with my 8 year old son and showed him how to stalk corn. took a great doe. 35 yard shot double lung. was sweet! [IMG]

When you say stalk in the corn.....did you shoot while deer was in the corn or on edges? I've never used the corn to my advantage and would like to learn what you are talking about.

I'm impressed with the 8 year old coming along for the stalk. Congrats.

k, so to stalk corn you work a crossed the field starting at the down wind field end. so if the wind is out of the west I start on east end of field. peak my head into row of corn, look down for deer bedded or standing, if nothing step into the row then repeat. slowly working your way a crossed the field. when you hit the edge walk 100 yards or as far as you could see down the rows, and go back the the way through it slowly peaking down each row. if you happen upon a deer you want to shoot. get one row away. knock an arrow and slowly walk towards the deer. when you feel you are in bow range peak to see. If you are draw your bow and slowly step into the row for the shot. I have seen some huge bucks shot like that. It works well on rainy or windy days. your sound is masked well.

Another way to do it is get in the corn a few rows and walk to the deer when they come out and are heading to the corn. I have shot several big bucks like that also. I will wait in corn down wind of them. when they come out of woods and are crossing the alfalfa field I simply walk quietly into bow range of where I think they will enter the corn. then shoot them when they get in range. corn stalking is a riot! I had this 2.5 yr old at about 5 yds the other night. he was watching me trying to figure out what I was in the corn. then he walked right by! lol I told him to smarten up the neighbors might not let him go! lol [IMG]

That is great. I have never thought of stalking that way. I know people that sit in corn and hunt edges. Had never heard of this. More exciting to keep moving for a kid too.

You need to post about the corn stalking on bowhunting thread or forum. I'm guessing some other people could benefit from hearing about this.

Have to love this site for learning new things.
