I think we can settle in the team name? Anyone who hasn't checked in yet? Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Hard Nock Life is the most popular team name at this point. There is one person who had not checked in. Tomorrow is the cutoff for checkin & we can be assigned an alternate. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Alright, Hard Nock Life and okie_flinger for captain is my final answer so we can get this part done.
I'd prefer someone that has not been a team captain before to get a chance to... someone was nominated early; I'll have to scroll to find it... Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
It was Travis (greatwhitehunter) that was nominated early... Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I've never been captain but don't care either way. There really isn't much a captain has to do anyhow. We just need to make sure we all follow the rules as far as what we need after a deer is harvested in order for the deer to count towards the contest. I'll change my nomination to Josh if you don't want to, Marty.
Unfortunately not me either....my computer skills or lack thereof regarding graphics or any type of art work are completely sub par to most! I work in finance so Excel is my best friend pretty much lol
Hey Junior....quick question do you think a 30-30 is adequate to take a black bear? I personally think so as I would use a 170 grain Winchester Super X round and also be around a 20-25 yard shot, but have heard others talk about how it is not the ideal caliber for bear. My bow is not fixed as of yet unfortunately and with my grandparents being ill and not doing very well I am considering using the Win Model 94 30-30 my grandfather gave me years back in efforts of making him happy and proud. I was looking forward to this trip for so long and now that my bow is still out of commission and not ready it's looking like it will be a gun hunt, it has totally taken the wind out of my sail.
Yikes....good question. I have not taken a long gun bear hunting but i have learned a few things from those who have... practice the close range shot! Just because it is inside 30 yards, it is not a given. Most rifles we practice at 100+ yards. Thats a huge difference. Open sights are best for close range and whatever you use, the round needs to be something that expands upon contact entry and not so high powered that it passes straight through not causing much damage. ( those type of tracks suck). Know where the vitals are & your aim point, this isnt a deer. Ive seen & helped track bears taken with long guns where we had blood & bone fragments & couldnt find the bear because the rpu2nd passed through quickly without much expansion & the wound must have plugged with fat, there was a lack of vital damage. Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck on your hunt, there is definitely nothing else like a bear hunt! Sent from my SM-G935R4 using Tapatalk
Thanks so much, I appreciate that! This whole situation has certainly thrown a monkey wrench into the mix! I am beyond upset about not having my bow for this hunt! Friend of mine who's property we will be hunting has his oldest sons PSE Chaos he said I can use I would just put it in the press and adjust the draw length, but I'm not to thrilled to use that "caliber" of a bow to be honest. I can use my 300 Win Mag or even a Slug gun also, I will be bringing up an abundance of options and will be shooting them all on Thursday to insure I make the best decision. I even can use a recurve if I want, but I haven't been shooting it much this summer. Most likely wont pick the 300 Win Mag cause it is scoped....the 30-30 and 2 slug guns I have are open sights though. Decisions Decisions!!!!
Any way you look at it sounds like a blast to me! Dont stress it and have fun! Bear arent like deer. Most of the time the bear k iws you are there, just a matter if how hungry it is, so you should have all the time in the world Sent from my SM-G935R4 using Tapatalk
I shot mine with a 30-06 scoped at 20 yards with 165 grain core-lok round and it died 40 yards from the bait pile in under a minute, if that helps you at all. When I was there it was 95° every day and I never saw a bear so on the sixth day of the hunt I brought my rifle instead of my bow out of laziness. Had it walk right in within 10 minutes of being in the stand. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
