Got a question, does finding a dead buck count as a shed?

Nope, in the rules it says "dead heads are cool, but do not count for any points."

What is your guys' shed hunting experience? I dont do all that much since I dont own any land. However, this year I will try to talk to the landowners who's ground I hunt and see if I can stomp around there this spring.

So far this year, I have found about six I think. I will check the inventory when I get home. Some have come on public land, others just feet from my treestand.

Checking in. I haven't found any evidence that they are dropping yet, but I put out some corn in one of my hotspots and threw up a few trail cams to do some inventory. Hopefully this year will be better than last year. I did quite a bit of hunting last year and didn't find a single one, but the year before I found 7 or 8 on my place.

I started shed hunting around 12 years ago. Most of my sheds are from Wisconsin, but I also have found them in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. I don't find many (between 6-12 a year). I really like the time out in the woods checking out new spots for the next deer season. 95% of my shed come off public land.

    Good luck, Rory

As for the rest of this shed hunting thing, I am all for jeffacarp being captain. I think we need a captain, dont we?

I checked some cams yesterday, looks like all the bucks are still holding both sides here in southeast Kansas. I'm hoping to do well this year on account of the 80 acres of wheat holding deer on our ranch. I've also got access to some other private ground in the family to shed hunt. It's more acreage than I'll likely be able to walk in a season, but I'm going to give it my best.

As far as the captain thing goes, I have no objection to being captain. If there's someone else that really has their heart set on it, I have no problem stepping back either.

I'll check in with the moderator of the contest and see what the captain needs and responsibilities are.

Good to luck to all of you, hopefully we can all have great shed seasons!

Southwest part of the state. My brother has a cabin near Custer.

Captian jeffacarp sounds good to me!

Near Custer, eh? I dont get over that way much but I am looking to do some hunts over there within these next couple of years. For one, we are applying for Fall River county antelope tags this year over there (Fall River is the furthest SW county in the state) and I have a preference point for a Black Hills rifle tag. This was also my first year of spot and stalk muley hunting, the southwest part looks like a dream for that on the maps. We hope to get out there for that sometime in the next few years.

I killed a nice antelope buck on 10/10/10 near Dewey north of Edgemont in Custer county in a walk in area. In 2011 I had a West River any deer tag in Fall county. Went the 2nd week and didn't see much. Passed on a OK muley on the first day (4X4 about 16 wide) and a few smaller ones. There was a big snow storm on the day we got there and the hunting was bad. Ended up shooting a small 8 point whitetail on the last day. I have 3 points for a Black Hill's tag and 1 for West River. Would love to go archery hunting along the Missouri River some day, but I heard that deer got hit bad with Blue tongue in that area.

I have actually hunted along the Missouri river for the last five years! Blue tongue (or EHD) did take its tole this year in Charles Mix, Bon Homme, Yankton and Gregory county (all river counties in the southern part of the state) but it didnt really affect the muleys.

This season I took my personal best muley along the MO, he is in the 140s I am thinking. He isnt a giant muley, but for public land I couldnt ask for much more! I also gave spot and stalk hunting a go this year out there with the bow. We tried it in late December and it was a blast. Those river counties dont hold a lot of good land for spot and stalk hunting, though. When we try spot and stalk hunting again, it will be further west.

Pull my trail cam cards last night. All bucks are still carrying their headgear at this point.

Just snowed another 5" today. Going to be hard to find any sheds for awhile.

Hey fellas, heard back on my PM to krohboy who I think is running this contest or at least helping moderate it. Sounds like we need to elect a captain and come up with some kind of name or slogan.

Im in KC for work right now so unfortunately I won't be checking cams until Saturday. I'm really hoping to see some horn hit the ground soon. It's getting itchy around here...
