This will be my last weekend with a bow. I have to work tomorrow, (at double time and a 1/2 ALL this week!), and then off to the lease. With this full moon I'll be making all day sits hoping to catch something on his feet mid day. General season ends Sunday 1/2 hour after sunset. If I don't get a buck on the ground I'll have to take the ML out for the next 2 weekends. I really want to get it done with the bow. It would be a great way to start the new year.
Well gents, the fat lady has just about sung! "Twas a good year and we fought hard. Wish I could've put a few more points on the board for Team 2, but that's life I suppose. Next year!
Alright, let me start by saying that I am still alive!!! I know many have been asking! A combination of things just caused me to take a break from the site for awhile but I am now back!!! Hope that everyone had a good holidays! So I know everyone has been waiting for the story of my little deer back on December 7th. I had the opportunity to get out and hunt for the first time with Racewayking. We were able to get out to the raceway for what would be my only ever chance to hunt this piece of land and most likely Racewaykings last day to ever hunt it. It was a cold and snowy morning but we made it. After a short discussion on where to setup I decided to hunt out of a treehouse that Raceway hunted out of the night before and knew that several deer were feeding in front of on a regular basis. And Raceway decided to setup just up the hill from me about 100 yards or so. After a very uneventful morning we decided to head to his place for some lunch and to warm up. We returned for an afternoon hunt and I returned to my same location. The afternoon started out just like the morning left off. The woods were extremely quiet except for the noise of vehicles just down the way from us. After about an hour and a half I noticed a deer headed my direction. Knowing that this was going to be my last day hunting for the season as I had other commitments that would keep me out of the woods for the rest of the year I decided regardless of size if it presented me a shot I would take it. Almost as planned this deer came directly for me stopping about 22 yards broadside. From my view it appeared to be a smaller doe so without any hesitation I released an arrow and dropped in it's spot! I noticed that my shot was a bit high but still a kill shot. Instantly the deer try to move and a puddle of blood was enormous. After about 10 minutes I got tired of watching this deer just below me so I put a second shot that entered and exited the exact same stop. Clearly I learned that my distance judgement is a bit off. I texted Raceway letting him know that I was getting down but was going to wait on doing anything till after dark as I didn't want to spook anything else in the area that may present him with a shot! After dark we moved the truck so we could see what we were doing and then I realized this was actually a buck but no antlers had yet broke the skin on the skull. We quickly field dressed it and hit the road. I managed to get ahold of Dr. Andy and dropped off my deer at his house so we could butcher him together the next day. A huge thank you to both of them for all the help!!! I will get the pictures posted on the scorecard page shortly!
