Our weather is wet and windy here, too. They're calling for rain Friday - so that depends for me. Weather just isn't in my favor this year. Congrats on a new job, Mike!
I have shootable bucks on camera! I went out to refresh mineral sites, make some scrapes and swap 3 day old cards...I honestly never expected to see mature bucks here this early.
Sorry everyone, no luck this morning. I had one come through before daylight at 17 yards but could not tell what it was by moonlight. Didn't see anything else until I got in the truck and headed home...two does standing in the bean field a mile down the road. Big bucks are really starting to ramp up scraping and rubs now here.
I'm headed to hunt a clover plot tonight....rain finally stopped after 4 days...hopefully it will be a good evening
Good luck! I got permission today for 40 acres 15 minutes from my new job. Might not sound exciting but it is going to allow me to get some week day evening hunts in where otherwise I was stuck with just weekends. I am going Tuesday (he is busy until then) to walk it and put a camera out.
I'm going to have to change tactics on this new farm where Crossbow and Boom live. I hunted it a little last year (like three days) but it's a challenge for sure. The entire 352 acres is one big square tract of weeds and grass that are about 7' tall with some brushy draws and scattered brush. I mowed some paths around through it and I set a new ladder on the edge of a 45 acre milo plot that is so late it's still filling out. I saw one yesterday morning before light and nothing at all yesterday afternoon (which is a first in two years of hunting for me). That no deer sit broke my streak and I'm not happy about that. I'm going to have to set a stand in the oaks somehow without kicking every deer on the farm and set one back in the pastures on one of the mowed trails I guess. Until then I may hunt one of the other properties. There's no shortage of good bucks on the others, just the thought of chasing bucks further down on the list is a bit irritating.
Finally got a chance to get back out and just shoot again tonight and here are my first 2 shots from 30 yards...can't complain too much with that. Plus even better news...I get to sneak out for a day of hunting on Saturday, and the weather looks perfect to sit a stand that has had quite a bit of daytime buck activity. Been way to long since I've sat in a stand!
I'll be heading back out this evening, if the rain holds off. Supposed to be high 50s - which to me is perfect. I'm a fair weather hunter! Hopefully the wind stays down. Going to be interesting though, fields are starting to get cut, so I am hoping they finished cutting or haven't started. It doesn't affect my stand cut or uncut - but if the tractors are out - they're usually parked about 10 yards behind me!
Well, I got it done this morning, add one doe to the score card. Pics later today after I get her dressed before it gets hot.
Thanks Booner, had 8 does around me this morning. Nice change from a no deer sit, lol. Shot her at 20 and she went 30, dropped in sight and recovered a perfectly good arrow and broadhead from the pass through.
I just wanted let you all know I posted my pics of the 3pt Buck I shot. I'm sorry it wasn't bigger. It was the first one with my new crossbow and the only one I've seen. And my freezer was empty. hope the point help the team. I'm still looking for a doe yet. good luck to everyone. We haven't been getting any pics on the 5 trail cams we have out. just does and turkeys. very slow compared to past seasons.
