Congrats W MA! He's a fine buck I've been seeing deer, but the only buck i'm seeing are buttons. Still haven't seen much for rut sign. One more hunt here before I take off for the WI Rifle season. Then I'll be back for some late season action. The good news is I'll definitely be able to cross the lake then. We're iced over now. I'm going to check the thickness tomorrow, but I bet we'll have 8"+ by the time I get back!
wow... that much ice already!?!?!crazy.. edges very little ice right... supposed to be in 20s most of the week... tomorrow very cold and windy.. Wed just cold.. i'll be out again wed afternoon.
Ok guys, it's been a while since I posted. Really enjoyed my time in Illinois a few weeks ago, some some deer movement but neither my dad nor I got a shot on any good bucks. Non-bowhunting update: The rifle season opened up here in LA/MS this past Saturday. I was able to shoot my first ever pig and the first ever killed on our lease. I was (and still am) extremely excited! 11/22/14 135lb Boar 30-06 130yds Saturday afternoon I got to the stand at 2:35. I was hunting in a cutover and my dad was hunting another stand just 350yds away to my back-left. I got to my stand and climbed in, my dad waited till I was set before he started walking in case he was to jump something on the way. So I sit down, put on my binoculars, answer a text, look up and boom, there is a pig in the food plot 130yds away in front of me. I quickly grab my rifle, zoom in the scope and BOOOOOMMMMM! piggy drops! I was stoked, I've been hoping for a pig for years but no one has ever seen them while hunting, just on cameras. I hear my phone vibrating, it's Dad, I answer "Bacon down!!" He was just as excited. He hadn't even made it to his stand which was a 5 minute walk Sorry, Mom
They taste very good! Not like your farm raised pig fattened on sweet feed but they're tasty. We are going to try to cure the ham and see how it comes out. Also, one of my favorite things to do it smoke that front shoulder. Talk about good! if we had stayed at the camp another day I think I would have tried to smoke one whole half of it like you see in that picture
Awesome Vid Billy.. we need to get together next year and do something. storm rolling in tomorrow afternoon... I will be in the tree. they should be up moving and feeding before... I hope anyway... MA bow ends on Sat... Shotgun starts Monday 12/1. everything will change then.. Would really like to try to get one more w/ bow before that... Wed afternoon, Friday AM & PM, Sat PM.. we shall see.
Thanks guys! Yeah def Western MA, I was hoping to get out that way this week I don't know if I'll make it or not
for shotgun? I 'm sure we can find a time to hook up one of these days... will be fun w/ some fresh snow.
Its a rifle area, we always have great success there its where I go when I don't have lick anywhere else its pretty sweet
Gotta rant while I'm here (Western MA you've probably already seen) I hunt bow only areas and about 4:30 this evening I heard 3 gunshots and one was real close. I didn't see anything but when I got to my car I found a note on my windshield stating "Bow Only" which is funny to me because I haven't hunted with a gun in a few years. But it was directed at me soooo I wrote a little note on the board and left it in a tree marked with orange marking tape.
Crazy Billy.. good way to handle it. The guy ever call? Great am here in MA... big snow storm already hitting as I write this. I figured i'd sneak out and sit until 8am when the snow was supposed to start. I figured they'd be feeding hard. I walk in and see eyes in my head lamp... off they go. I check my cam and 3 does, so no harm done... 3 bucks (2 2.5 year olds) had come through the night before and another spike. I climb up and settle in... very quiet. check my watch at 7:30 and figure i'd give it another half hour.. stand up to stretch and leaning against the tree I hear something back on the woodroad behind me... I look and see a good sized body coming.. head behind a blowdown they have to go under to reach stand. He comes under and I see a very nice rack for around here. He comes in and I stop him at 15 yards and put one through the boiler room. He runs off 20 yards... stops... stands for a few seconds... hind end gets bobbing and weaving, and off he goes on the death run / crash for another 20 yard. I never had this deer on cam in 3 months of running cam there this year. Just goes to show that weather change for a storm and the rut really make things happen. By far my best hunting season ever.... very lucky and truly blessed. I will post the pic shortly, but a very nice mature 8 pt.
