Well this was a good weekend for me down here. Headed up to the camp at noon on Friday and was in the stand by 4:00 that evening. The wind was HOWLING! I knew it was unlikely to see anything but it was good to be out there. Saturday morning I saw 2 doe and 2 yearlings come running through as if something was chasing them. I assume it had to be a coyote because our rut doesn't happen until late December - early January. Saturday afternoon I sat on this plot: wind was still blowing but was supposed to slack off. It did so around 5:45. At 6:15 (sunset) I see a deer walk out of the pines in that tiny gap where my pins are pointing in the picture above. I just can't believe it. I've seen so many deer this season but haven't gotten a shot on many. She walks off. I'm upset. Then all of a sudden I see her again; she turned around! She fed towards me and I finally got the shot when she was in the smaller gap to the right between the little pines. Now I'll be honest, I am not proud of the shot, but it got the job done. The 2 3/8" cut of the rage xtreme may have bailed me out on this one. She ran 30yds max. I must have severed the main artery that services the liver. My mistake was not stopping her because she was unaware of my presence. She must have taken a step as I shot causing the shot to be back. But I'm thankful I made a clean kill. I heard he crash within 5 seconds of the shot. And now for the trip I have been waiting for! Saturday morning around 2am my dad and I are hitting the road for Illinois! We are going to be hunting public land for a week. This is our first trip up so if yall have any tips and pointers they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, OH, and huge congratulations to little OH! I still remember my first deer way back when with my dad. Nothing like that!
Nice job Mylsuhat! great shooting OH, congrats on your boy's success!!! So awesome.. one of my favorite pics of the year right there. That's what it is all about! Keep it up guys!
I need to get on the board! Switching jobs and dates with the wife haven't left me much time for hunting. I'm going to he able to hunt this weekend though and it's calling for mid 40's temps. Something has to be moving then!
I second that! I've been away for far too long. I had a great elk hunt in Colorado back in September and haven't had a chance to hunt since then. 2 out of the 4 of us were successful. Me, not so, but I got one on my previous trip so I still considered this last trip a success. This weekend I'll be in a tree!
rut is on here in Western Massachusetts. Lots of daytime buck activity and bucks starting to get shot. Unfortunately, this one was chasing a doe across the highway yesterday around 4:30 pm and met his maker (little mini cooper). The guy who hit him is ok, but his car is totaled... the cop called me and asked if I wanted him... Venison always in hot demand so I ran down and got him while he was still steaming. A shame to have them go this way though.. A very good buck for this area.. 10 pt. prob dressed about 175lb. Nice 3.5 year old here.
Thought I would share a couple of photo's from my elk trip. The group photo was taken about 3 am after we blew out a tire on our truck trying to get close enough to haul it out. My brother got his elk on Friday night, the evening before we headed back home. My brother and I watched this same elk from 70 yards for about 40 minutes earlier that morning. I captured some nice video of him I'll try to get that posted soon.
What a great week, besides breaking my phone, my son and I have had here in Missouri! He gets his first deer then sits by my side in the tree as I dropped this guy thismorning mid morning! 10 point and 210lbs after being dressed! They were chasing hard today!
Awesome buck OH!!!!!! Congrats! And to have your son with you as well! Great moment! congrats! That pic is great!
OH, you can always buy a new phone, but not a hunt like that. It doesn't get any better than that OH. Both of you will have lifetime memories with that week of hunting. Congratulations.
