Shot this big bodied 6 point on public land Thursday afternoon. He first came by my stand to the right offering no shot and continued straight away towards the crop fields. I was able to stop him with a grunt tube at about 25 yds. He stood there for over a minute looking over his back for the deer he thought should appear. Once again, he began to walk away. With little to lose I again grunted loudly and mouth bleated twice. He immediatey turned around and started back in my direction. When his head went behind a hickory tree at 20 yards I quickly drew back to anchor. HE STOPPED. I held my draw for what seemed like over a minute with only his rear end and left eye visible. I couldn't move. He finally looked over his shoulder and I let down. After a few more seconds he lowered his head and continued around the tree quartering hard to me. I drew again anticipating a close shot if he came by me to the left. He picked up on the movement and turned facing me. I had my face completely blacked out and I supposed he couldn't see me. I held again for over a minute with my top pin directly on the bottom of his throat patch. No way was I taking that shot and I expected him to blow out at any second. I was determined to hold still or pass out trying. I eventually was going cross eyed looking at my sight and had to close my left eye. He finally turned to leave and I dropped the string as he got broadside at 18 yards. I watched my nockturnal seemingly disappear about 6 inches behind his front leg and about dead center up and down. He blew out to the northwest breaking branches on the way but I wasn't sure I heard him crash. I took a compass bearing on his travel route and waited. I got down 30 minutes after the shot and spent a few minutes arranging my stand and pack. By then it was dark. I tried to find my arrow. It was super thick with poison ivy and river cane and I couldn't find the first sign. I even lost my stand for about a minute and had to get the compass out to find my tree. At that point, I took another nocturnal equiped arrow and marked my tree. After another failed attempt to find blood, I went to the truck and called my wife to bring my 14 yr son and a lantern. By 9 p.m. we were back in the woods as a heavy fog descended in the bottoms. With the lantern light we picked up first blood 15 yards from the shot. The next 40 minutes was spent poring over very scant sign that consisted of occasional drops of blood and big tracks in the leaf litter. He stayed on the same bearing and several times the compass was as usefull as the lantern in picking up the trail. Overall, he only made it 75 to 100 yards and went down for good. He was double lunged with no exit hole. He had to fill up with blood before he left much of a trail. Upon field dressing, his body cavity was full of blood. I never did find the arrow. I am going back Monday morning to follow the toilet paper trail and hope to recover it. I would like to see the broadhead and figure out why the nock went out. Anyway, he was probably 190 lbs field dressed and I was tickled to death to have my son there to assist in the tracking and the drag out. He was eating it up and did a great job at finding sign. We were socked in by fog by the time it was over. I will say this to anyone who doesn't carry a compass. The only reason I found this deer was by marking an accurate bearing and I might not have found the truck had I not been carrying my compass. Cell phone aps and gps are great, but nothing beats a compass and the knowledge of how to use it. Sorry for the long rant. Good luck to all.

    Congrats KY72! Stud 6 point.

I sat my buddies place this morning with my son and buddy, in 3 hours we saw zero deer. The beans have been picked and the corn should start coming out this week hopefully we start seeing something.

Hey, good work both of you. KY I can relate to what you are saying about the compass. My buddy and I got "turned around" on our elk hunt this year in an area we can both walk out of blind folded... or so we thought. Our GPS wouldn't work unless we were walking at a decent rate but we were in a patch of boulders and down timber that kept us from moving fast enough to get a reading. It sucked quite frankly and we ended up coming out on the road a mile north of our camp and got in at 11pm. It should have been a 25 minute walk and ended up 2 1/2 hours. Congrats on the deer both of you. I'm interested in hearing where the arrow went and what it hit on the far side of the deer that kept it from going through. I'm guessing the shoulder.

I'm curious about the arrow too. I'm off this morning and headed on a little squirrel hunt and hope to recover the arrow. It was broadside shot. The arrow entered 4 inches behind the leg mid body and failed to get out the off side ribs. It opened fully as the hide had a 2" cut on the entrance. The head entered horizontally and went in perpendicular to the ribs. The oddity is the inside of the entrance wound was only about 1 1/4 inch and did not break the ribs it went between. The arrow fully penetrated both lungs and the tip almost poked through the skin on the off side. I'll let you know what I find.

Found the arrow 50 yds from the shot. It appears that one blade snapped off on entry. The nock broke on impact as well. Arrow was undamaged. Overall, what I suspected. The deer actually went 120yds. The most surprising thing to me was that the gut pile had been untouched. I would have imagined coons, possums and coyotes would have cleaned it up before daylight.

I hunted from 10 am to 2 pm today. No deer today but I've had good luck hunting mid-day on full moon days. If we can knock down a few does, we'd be in the thick of it. :D
