Checking in again. Finally home and enjoying freedom. well my weekend was extremly hectic to say the least but I managed to put out some vanilla extract with two trail cams and create two mock scrapes. My best place that I had the most hope in was a little disturbed while I was away found a hog trap ten yards from my tree. Well the DNR must have stuck it there. Its the size of a car. Anyway it wasnt set and didnt look like it got any critters in it recently so I'm still going to set up there. Tomorrow morning I'll be in a tree in my second pick. Hope it all goes well, got some good practice in and I'm really looking foward to it.
Also started fletching my own arrows, it's pretty fun. Ok then, I'll let you know how it goes.

Wednesday is going to be the day for me. I was out on Saturday morning. I had 5 does come in flagging hot (what I call having their tails straight out) when I did a few grunts/bleats with some doe estrus out. Had one of them bed 30 yards from me. Seems the season is just about started! They were all looking for the hot doe. Maybe on Wednesday something with some antlers will respond! Two of the deer I saw were walking funny. I thought it was my imagination at first, but I think they may have gotten caught in a trap. I'll have to ask my cousin about that, as I think he needs to work on his trapping methods if he's catching multiple deer in them. Anyway, I'm back out wed, highs in the low 50s. Best temps of the season so far, hopefully I can close the deal on something that measures 120+. If nothing with antlers before rifle season, I'm going to take out one of the limping does.

At day break yesterday I made a piss poor shot on a small doe, over her back no blood notta and this was from about 15 yards, sort of a high angle, needless to say I'm out of practice, I'm not hitting the woods up for a bit I'll be hitting the range more , its to bad too as a huge cold front is now hitting the south. Oh well I obviously need the practice.

Encountered a twin to the buck I shot last year gun hunting this past weekend, but he was only an 8 instead of a 10. He is an absolute stud so I'm excited for the upcoming weeks as I continue to have a plethora of great bucks to go after. I went home this past weekend to hunt. Weather predictions looked great with lower temps, however, as Saturday and Sunday got here the winds were ridiculous. It a really poor weekend for deer movement given these winds and had I not had this encounter I would have been very disappointed. This encounter was a sighting at 250 yards so not exactly an encounter, but it is a sighting that I had not yet had so it was a pleasant surprise. Saturday morning I seen 1 deer walking out. Sat a ridge between bedding areas above some alfalfa and a corn field. Saturday night I seen 15 deer, sitting in a big bowl in a new area, however, the closest I came to a deer was about 90 yards. The movement was farther up the valley and at the end of the valley along the CRP. I was unable to id a few of the deer and 1 deer at dark was a stud (wasn't able to tell which buck he was in the timber as light faded) Otherwise, I seen 2 1 1/2 year olds also this night. Sunday morning 1 seen 1 deer a little 1 1/2 year old buck and that big 8 at a distance. Sunday night on my 4th windy hunt I seen 0 deer except for the 2 I bumped walking out about 20 feet from my vehicle. I had planned to hunt this upcoming weekend and the weather looks great for it, however, my girlfriends siblings are visiting town. This may prevent me from hunting which would be a huge bummer, yet it may be good PR for me with not going to be home much for the following month. Still is a chance I will get out on Saturday though. The following week I will be out the 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th which will start my hunting 8 of 12 days straight.

Best wishes to the rest of the team. Keep after it and shoot straight. I think things are going to take off for us as a whole really quick here!

I was able to sit until 930 this morning. The wind got to unbearable speeds (20+) and it just kept swirling. Had a steady drizzle and cold front hit last night so I expected it to be a good morning. J saw nothing. Not even a squirrel! The swirling winds just kept the deer down. I was going to go out this evening, but it seems that the winds aren't going to let down. In the 20s today and tomorrow. Kinda sucks. I'm a little bummed. I really thought I'd get on something this week. Next week is warm again, so another goofy season.

Well I made a surprise visit to my stumping grounds yesterday in the rain to do some more scouting, prior to this weekend's hunt. I snuck into the south east corner of the property that i've never been to. well it looked good several rubs in a row, so I hung a new set up over the rubs and some trails meeting near by. I'll be sitting all day long Saturday, in hopes the rut starts a few days earlier. I'll be checking in during the hunt to update everyone, much like my opening day. I just hope that I have better luck this time. I'm letting my buddy hunt the hill stand from opening day. I have tons of photos of deer there and he is sure to get a shot at that 130". I'm chasing much bigger hawgs then that one.

Saturday is almost here. I just have to finish today and tomorrow. I hate those little doubts in my head that question my choosen set up for Saturday. There isn't a ton of deer sign there, but there are buck signs. OH MY its going to be a long day.

Good luck this weekend everyone. I'll be out Saturday morning in the same place I blew a shot on a small doe. Sunday will be no good for me as I'm driving my wife to New Orliens for a flight. I think it should be mentioned that I did spray that location that I shot at the small doe 2 days prior with vanilla extract.

Cannot wait to hit the woods this week. The rut should really be kicking up this week and I'm hoping to see some wandering bucks (we don't house many/any big bucks). We have a lot of does here, so there will be some bruisers cruising I'm hoping. I will be pulling out all the stops, I'll start rattling some this week too. It would be awesome if the weather people kept with tradition (ie, are wrong) and it's cooler than expected this week. I doubt it, so probably won't pull an all day sit until the following week. Best of luck to anyone getting out tomorrow!
