I snuck in a quick sit last night. The wind was good for one of my corner stands and I took the rattling horns, even tho I have never had much success with that tactic. Gave em a light tickle around 6 and a small buck (cow horn 2 year old) emerged across the field at about 100 yards and headed right for me. He settled into my window at about 20 yards and ate some corn, pawed at the ground, looked around and posed for me. Torture. After a bit, he turned and headed in to the thicket that is in my blind spot and chased out a doe staying hot on her heels, grunting and even bit her. I never knew she was there till then. Between that and the owl chasing the cat that was chasing a rabbit, it was a crazy cool evening. No shooters showed. There was a good size 6 standing 80 yards from my truck when I was leaving, so they are definitely roaming around finally. I hope to get back out tonight since activity has picked up.
Tinks? I couldn't pull the trigger on $24 Tinks 69. I made it out with $16 worth of pee and will have to get more next week.
I personally gave up on using deer pee/estrous scents in a bottle. Of all the times I used it, I had it work 1 time but I didn't make the shot count. Pretty heart breaking to be honest but thats another story I could share later on. The only 2 scents that I use and swear by now are Evercalm and Buck Fever Synthetics for scrapes Granted I know Evercalm has deer pee in it but those 2 products have proven to me they work countless of times.
I've spent the week ruining a sweet hunting lease on the Ohio/Indiana line. The county purchased this property and is turning it into a nature preserve. We planted 400 trees in the 2 big food plots and now we are spraying invasive plants that make the bedding areas. The place will be cool in a few years, but I would rather hunt it now.
Man, seeing that picture really gets me pumped. I LOVE when its the rut and you get those really cloudy dark gloomy days. I'll be in stand in the morning in a close ladder stand and then hunting my best stand saturday night and sunday morning before heading home for a 3 day work week, then back up hunting.
At about 1:15 a 3.5 yr old half rack strolled past. Had he not been broke off, the outcome probably would have been different. But he got a pass today. Been snowing since noon. None has stuck, but it has made for a fun sit.
Finally got my buck entered. It ended up scoring 129 1/8. A little better than I was thinking it would. Good luck to you that are getting out tomorrow. Forecast is calling for storms here all day.
Well he's alive! That's the buck I wounded a couple of weeks ago. There were no good pics of the entrance side. I'm not sure if that the scar on the exit side or if I'm just seeing things?
Ended up seeing 13 deer yesterday. The half rack being the largest. At dark there were 3 doe/fawn groups in the beans that were being harassed by a couple 1.5 yr old bucks. Had a skunk within 10 yrds of my tree for the last hour of the day.
All settled in for a nice, cool evening sit in the ravine I have been doing the camera study on. There is more wind swirl than I had hoped for. But the cameras seem to indicate that night time is the right time, so I'm looking to confirm that with a bloody arrow. To all that are out tonight, good luck.
You would think the entrance wound would be even a little higher than that. That's like a perfect heart shot.
Saw 7 this evening. 2 bucks the larger of the two was 300yrds away on opposite hillside. Doe with a 4 pt came through at dusk, which was pretty exciting (til I realized it was a 4 pt). Pulled cards on the way out. Had more does than normal, but zero sightings of the 3 bucks I'm after. This pic was kind of neat, it is an odd rack for the area.
Had bucks everywhere. Every time I hit the grunt and doe bleat. Just nothing big enough to shoot. I did find a monster track and a hug rub yesterday. Going to try to get it him tomorrow.
