I made it to WY last night by 6pm. Jumped back in the truck and took a tour of the Bear Lodge Mountain area. There were lots of deer out in the lowland fields, but there is very limited access there. Got a couple of ideas for where to begin glassing...but not much confidence in them as there were no mule deer seen (all Whitetails). Got up this morning and headed out at first light to look for some mulies. First stop was the Black Hills National Forest, saw two separate mulie bachelor groups, both were near (not on) public land. Then we went down to Upton to check out the grasslands. Saw probably 100 antelope...but no deer. Tonight we are headed back to the Black Hills to do some glassing. Certainly no shortage of animals running around...just haven't stumbled onto the mule hot spots yet. Sent from my XT1254 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Well all my sh!t's in a pile and ready to go. All I need to do is wash clothes and soak gear in dead down wind...and wait till Saturday. Shot pretty good, but I need to get a twist out of my strings for this peep sight to line up. I can still see well enough, but I worry about low light-and I want my dang sight right. 40 yards might not be an option for me right now. I'm just not shooting great there...maybe mental or rust. Not a big deal really. Most shots are 30 or less anyway.
Good luck! I would absolutely love to get out there one day. My Dad did a Wyoming hunt years ago, had a blast, and killed a nice 10 with a .300 Win Mag. He doesn't bow hunt. I think that was his last hunt. Anyway, soak it in, man. Have fun and smoke one if you can. Oh and please post pics of the beautiful scenery if you get the time or inclination.
Passed on a chip shot at a doe this morning. She still had two fawns with her and they looked like late drops.
My view for the evening. Put on quite a few miles scouting for places to hunt the rest of the week. I found a nice washout to call a ground blind, but was busted in prime time by a stud of a Whitetail. I might have to try to arrange a meeting with him later in the week. So far I would say I have seen an 80/20 split between whitetail and mulies. Sent from my XT1254 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
What type of scat is this? Seemed too large to be a doe...kind of hoping I stumbled into elk country. Sent from my XT1254 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Hard to tell on my phone but looks like cow elk. Sent from my SM-G935V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
One for the blooper reel. Got to the top of Bald Mt. yesterday, set my stuff down to get some water and catch my breath. As I was getting ready to push on, noticed something was missing. So back down the hill I went. Sent from my XT1254 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Well nothin here yet been out the last two days. Seen some two small does an one really nice doe. She was at 40 yards. I was gonna take her down but the lanyard I was using was too short an wouldn't let me turn all the way or even draw the bow.(that got fixed the next day). Since we hunt public land we saw two other hunters and they walked in 20 yards from my wife's stand. Since it's Sunday we are going to go do a family hike/hunt. Tomorrow we are gonna sit in a different spot an see what we can do. Tuesday we plan an all day sit in the stands again. Hoping people stay out till then. . Also since we are gonna be back in there we are gonna switch cars an see if they are moving earlier or later. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
Picture ain't showing for me? But if it's too big for deer but looks kinda like deers then it's more than likely elk Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
Best of luck to you and the wife, Drew! Out of curiosity, did the hunters who stumbled in even notice she was there? I have had to whistle at guys who decided to stop and chat under my stand before. Lol. Scared the scrap out of em, and they apologized a lot. Hoping y'all have a great hunt! Sent from my SM-G935V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
I believe they did. They should have been able to see her. You can see the stand off the old logging road. She could hear them talking the whole time and she even turned and waved at them haha. Then they only went 80 yards from her an started bugling and cow calling. Our elk ain't even talking yet. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
