I work with a bunch of snowflakes! My guys just called in a panic because somebody was shooting a gun by them. I drove over and couldn't find anybody else on this property. The next closest property is 700 yards away through dense woods. Not really panic worthy...
I'd have been going over to see what kind of fun they were having and maybe send a few rounds with them. Just me tho.
One of the lucky Kentucky hunters on team 23 nailed a nice buck this morning. Grrrrrr...I hate waiting.
Well I'm back from my morning hunt. Didn't see a thing except a doe on the drive up. Pulled all three cards an put new ones in. Got a decent 3x4 muley and a nice 6x? elk. I got a jury summons so I got to wait an see if it gets cancelled or if I can get out of it. Next time up I'll hang stands. Then it's gonna be all day sits if nothing else comes up. So cool to have that kind of variety on your camera. I mean I get racoons and coyotes, but somehow doesn't have the same ring to it.
So I wanted badly to go pull cards. I didn't. I still think I need to stay out of there till I hunt that area. So thanks for posting pics. I'm living vicariously through y'all until the 16th. I'll get pics then and maybe the best kind. Sent from my SM-G935V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Sorry so late guys, I stayed as long as I could, I didn't find her. I told my buddy to watch for buzzards these next couple days. He said he'd look some more but I'm sure it's yote meat by now and the buzzards and crows will get the rest. Gave it my best shot. On the brighter side I'll be going back down to hunt on the 23rd and 24th. Then our season here in Ohio starts on the 30th. In between I'll be busy shooting bows, setting up one more stand, checking cameras, and freshening up corn piles. Busy, busy, busy. Good luck to everyone else and sorry about that doe. It was so thick in there, we probably walked past her a number of times cause I'm positive I heard her crash. I've probably killed a 100 or more deer over the years and I know what it sounds like when a deer crashes in the woods. I have never not found a deer when I heard it go down until now.
I know it happens to all of us one time or another, it's just so frustrating and when you've been there and done that so many times it makes it that much more frustrating. But, I know I'll be alright and heck, my season in Ohio hasn't even started yet!
We loaded the truck this morning and have made it to the Minnesota line. Very excited to be taking my bow for a walk tomorrow! Sent from my XT1254 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
That sucks, Shawn. I've been there. The worst one I had was several years ago in NC when I had a bruiser 10 follow 2 does under my stand at 15 yds. I put the pin on him and squeezed off a shot that looked to be in the boiler room, watched him mule kick and run 20 yds, stop, stagger a little and then walk out of sight. I gave him an hour and called my buddy down to recover the stud buck that would've been my first bow buck. We looked and looked till the blood thinned. He never once laid down. We put a tracking dog on him a couple hours later, and found blood again only to lead us to the neighbor's property line. They had long horn steer in the pasture and would not grant us permission to recover the deer. I was so pissed, but couldn't do anything about it. I know that deer died. He really didn't go far (we figured about 1/4 mile), but it was some thick cover all the way to the property line, and I never wanted to go outlaw and trespass more in my entire life. In hind sight I think that A hole neighbor recovered him for himself or maybe it is just wishful thinking. I have replayed that shot in my head a thousand times and can't figure out what went wrong. Pass through shot, quartering away right in the sweet spot, and that damn deer kept trucking for 1/4 mi! It really messed with me for some time to the point I almost hung up my bow. I don't do this to make animals suffer, and practice my ass off to make clean shots for clean kills. I'm still waiting on my first bow buck, but many a doe has gone down since then. None went more than a 100 yards, most went down within sight. Still, that one stings to this day.
We're all pulling for you...this is your year! Sent from my XT1254 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
So it looks like we are going to have highs around 80-82 the weekend of the opener with South winds. That is the worst wind for the lease other than my ladder stand. I can hunt my ladder stand, but that is on the outskirts of the core area for bucks. I do not want to burn that spot. I can do an evening hunt on public land, and that's an unknown as far as what's going to cruise through. Both public spots are long drives and long walks in and out in 80 degree heat. I'm leaning toward the ladder stand on the lease (it is 10 minutes away) to possibly have a shot at a doe. Of course the forecast could change. I don't really mind the heat, but the wind direction suuuuucks. So what do you guys think?
Don't burn your good buck spots early! That's my goal for the year also. I hung 2 stands on field edges...not to hunt fields, but to have super low pressure early season spots. We'll see how long I can hold out.
