I'll take whatever I can get...anything at this point is 100% beyond last year. When I asked my son last night if he thought I would get a deer Sat he said, "yep I am sure of it". Wondering what the luck of the draw will result in for a TA for us... I am conflicted as to my choice...
So, I was digging through the tote of sheds from last season that my father and I collected (he crushed me this year for totals, but I had a bum knee, walked to much to early in the deeper snow) anyways, getting back on target, digging through the shed tote and I stumble across a matched set that I am about 90% sure is the buck that I saw opening weekend. Put the tape on them and assuming a 16" spread, they came in at a respectable 129 1/2" They look just like the horns on the buck I saw, long beamed, heavy all the way to the end, spindly tines, if I estimated the current tine length correctly the buck should be a solid 148-154, so I want one more good look at him, (anything inside of 100 yards) and I am pretty sure I will be moving him into the shooter column. Got out 5 times this past weekend and it was pretty slow all around, most excitement I had was Saturday night I had a bachelor group of 3 young bucks come through, and they came by in increasing size, a 4 point, a 5 point and a 6 point, pretty easy to count tines when they all pass within 5 yards of the tree :D Other items of interest, in 25-35mph winds on Friday, I had a black (collarless) cat come by at 20 yards, twice. Had a great horned owl (assuming it was a great horned owl due to the size) fly within 10 yards of the stand about 10 feet off the ground being chased by 3-4 smaller birds. Had a red squirrel 'scout' me out for about 10 minutes, getting within about a foot away from me, staring me down (I must have done something right, it didn't go off with that awful red squirrel chattering) A large hawk circled the tree I was in Sunday night, came in from the north, left heading north, that one was level with the tree stand and a raccoon, don't see them that often. Fun stuff to break things up when you aren't seeing a lot of deer.
sounds like alot of fun. I was out last night and only had some squirrels and was pretty bored. Seeing the other animals is one of my favorite things when I'm fishing as well
Sean, go to a TA you are familar with and hunt. In the AM, get by the thick stuff with the right wind and you will cut them off as they bed down. In the PM, find a finger or point with acorns, set-up downwind and kill a doe/buck as they feed an hour or so before sundown. GET IT DONE BUDDY. Call me if you kill one and I will help you drag it out. I am getting my pass tomorrow and will send you my number so you can reserve a spot for me. I will pick it up early Saturday am or Friday afternoon.
Well I'm up a tree and much more comfortable. The last two time I wasn't wearing a harness cuz I didn't know how to wear it. Its all figured out now and I'm much more relaxed now all I need is some deer to walk by.
ill get us on the board tonight. was on the ground hunting last night and was in perfect position to smoke a doe but a loud truck spooked the deer and they ran 28 yard right passed me instead of walking. so i didnt get the shot. btw im sitting pretty close to the road. going to try it again tonight. also trying my hardest to get deer down on video. kinda tough but ill get it done... hopefully
Well guys the time is almost here! Planning on Friday pm and Sat and Sun am-pm. My areas are looking good. My son still has his youth tag through this weekend so going to try to get him one hard. He has a bow tag also. I'm very lucky he loves the outdoors as much as I do. Alot of memories we've shared and plenty more to come. Good luck to everyone over the next couple months! Hope to see many pics and updates on how everybodys season is going. Mark
well im having a bit of bad luck going on. it seem like every time i go out something happens out of my control. i was in a great spot. had seen deer walk by there from the day before. again im hunting right by a road that doesnt have that much traffic but we have a albino on the farm and people know its there so they come to see it. so with the last 30 min. left a van pull up right by where im sitting and stays there for about 10 min. so i know theres deer across the road trying to get to the bean field im sitting by. he leaves and comes back and sits there for another 10 min. he leaves and then a truck comes and watches the deer till it gets dark. so as im packing up the albino and another deer got across the road and walked 12 yards from me but it was to dark to see if the non-albino was a does or a nub. so no shot for me. now on the near corner of the field to me. 3 deer came out from the farmers yard but they got spook by a guy walking his dog and took off into the alfalfa field. im sure i should get one down soon but ill need to bring a horse shoe with me.
Dang, Hang in there, best thing about hunting is it is never the same hunt twice. Though something you might want to look into, guy at work swears it is illegal to shoot albinos in the state of Wisconsin (but not piebalds) I quick googled it, and found something over on the deer and deerhunting forums. http://forum.deeranddeerhunting.com/tm.aspx?m=79805&mpage=1&key=𓞾
Well fellas, I'm back from CO and finally getting around to checking in here on BHC. I didn't kill an elk this trip but we had a blast. Ended up seeing 2 bulls and 1 or 2 cows. I also saw some mule deer does and a really nice looking buck that was at least a 4x4 at about 30 yards, but I didn't have a mulie tag. Our season opens tomorrow, but I won't be able to make it out til Monday for a hunt. I'm going to the public land that I've been hunting for the past couple of years. The weather is supposed to be nice with light winds out of the northeast. I tried to catchup reading the posts since i left. I hope everyone and their families are doing well. Everyone please hunt safe and have fun!!
Its good to see you back. Sounds like co was nice, sorry you didn't get an elk maybe next time. Good luck out there
Florida Marine (Sean) and I are moving in to try to get it done tomorrow around the same hunting area. Time to pump some blood! Brett
Trucks loaded, laundry is drying with some nice dirt smelling dryer sheets - off to hit the rack! fingers crossed, prayers loaded Sean
I had an interesting night. I was heading to my stand and saw a doe and fawn in the fiekd so I tried to stalk them. Well it didn't work and they went into an island of trees. So I get in the bushes to hide and watch and they come back out. But then they bolt across the field and a young 6 point is runnin after them. I end up getting close to the doe and misjudged distance. Twice! So I lost 2 arrows and broadheads but it was a blast. Also florida sucked tonight so I'm bummed about that too.
Comescrashing...now THAT is hunting! Awesome job on having the guts to try out the stalk hunting. The deer are dumb the first week or so of the season and you can get some great chances at stalk hunting on the edges of fields and powerlines the last 1-2 hours before dark. Those two arrows lost gave you a whole lot of experience. That is great. Keep at it man, you are going to have a deer down soon! I also predict Sean is going to have one down before Wednesday. As for me I am only going to be able to get two afternoon hunts in during the next 8 days due to work and supporting my wife's endeavors.
