If you shoot the yote and it drops in your area, wouldn't that have scared off any deer?

Just curious, have never seen a yote while in the stand, but would love to kill a few, they are starting to become a problem on Quantico.

Honestly I really wouldn't care if it messed up that stand for the evening, if I could get the yote population one less......they are thick around us right now....I walked out to two packs howling last nite.....

The arrow that was in the ground last nite, with the big patch of hair, I believe spooked off a doe and 2 fawns that were coming out and the one buck that I saw last nite, they were all really skittish once they got down wind of that spot.

I've shot at two coyotes and missed both times. They are so fast and never seem to stop for long. I had a chip shot at 15 yards last year and shot right over top of a coyote. Dang! Sean, about 4-5 years ago I saw a pack of coyotes putting a doe on a death run. They were running her ragged.

I was told the harder you hunt them, they increase their pup percentage - the mother will have 3 instead of 2 and so on...

There is a decent bounty on them in some parts of the state - guy was telling me that in western VA, between the state and fed bounties its about $250 - $300 per yote.

well opening morning was rain and thunder. so i didnt go out. the evening sit was pretty good. saw 8 doe and fawns, 1 six, and 1 small eight. got some good footage. was about to smoke a doe but out of no where that small eight showed up. i didnt want to spook him by shooting the doe because i believe he is running around with the 150+ im trying to get. this morning i was going to go out but my 1 1/2 year old son had other plans... :) so im going back to the stand tonight in hopes of at least seeing the 150+ buck

Good luck. It sounds like a lot of deer.
Florida marine if I were getting 250 to 300 dollars for a coyote I would learn how to predator call and quick. That's awesome

    Well, upon further review........

I maybe should have taken the shot tonite

Had a nice 10 pointer come in about 20 minutes before closing, came into about 20 yards out and got a bit squirelly, sniffing the air, looking around, skittish (the wind was in ALL directions tonite, and about 0-3mph, but it didn't feel like it was blowing towards him at the time) anyways, he didn't clear the branches that were in the way and circled around in front of the stand, had a couple shooting lanes at 30-32 yards, never took the binoc's off of him, watched him walk away.

Quick number check put him in the 140-145 area, after I got home and took a look at some old pictures, sheds, mounts and compared it to the fresh memory, he was probably a good 155-160.

    Maybe.....

Looking back at the pictures of the buck I took last year, he has the same mass on the beams (at least the side thickness looked the same), longer tines, but the tines were 'skinny' or maybe the length made them look skinny? longer beam length, or the beams came out to the nose further but they didn't angle up off the head as much as last years buck.

and it kept running through my head, you only get one chance at a good buck a season, but do you want to finish the season on the 2nd hunt and be done early again?

second guessing on this stuff sucks :D

Wiaxle, you are the man if you are letting 150 inch bucks walk! You do what you feel is right and have a great season. If you did not feel it tonight then it wasn't right. Keep at it and good luck!

For me, my wife hurt her knee yesterday and had to go to the ER, thereby ending my chances to hunt on Saturday. I hope to get out there tomorrow to try for a doe. If not, I won't be hunting again for another 7-10 days because it is supposed to get into the 90's by the end of the week.

Brett I'm sorry to hear about your wife and hope she feels better soon
Wiaxle you have way more control than I. I would tried for a shot but you did what you felt was right. Maybe he'll come back around or maybe an even bigger one will.

wiaxle... That takes some self control. But I understand not shooting if your unsure. You will have another crack at him or a better one.
    Good luck.
Pretty un-eventful opening weekend here for youth season. Rain Sat am-pm and Sun am. Last night finally got out. 3 does were all we seen. But it did feel good to sit in a tree even if i wasnt hunting!

I know, that has been my mantra since oh, about 5 years ago, I drew on a nice 10 point 147" at 18 yards, quartering away, with the leg forward, you know, just yelling "SHOOT ME!!!!!" well it was opening day, the first afternoon, thought there might be better ones out there, so I let down, the next day the landowner went out and harvested it in a different stand about 70 yards away, (was a killing shot, but it ran along ways) I found it the next day for him, thus I know the score.

Biggest buck I saw all season, though on the other hand that was the first buck the land owner had taken in about 10 years, and I got free reign on the property for the next two seasons. So it was a good trade off in my opinion.

But you are right, you only get maybe one shot a year at a good buck. Be it in the first hour or the 200th (which I have done the last 2 years, 207 hours in 2008, and maybe 20 hours in 2009) but there was over 400 hours w/o taking a shot in 2006/2007

She is making heart shots at 20 and lungs at 30 with the crossbow. I am going to get her an apprentice lic and she is going Thur to view the video and get her hunting pass.

Got a good TA other then those I sent you and you sent me that I can get on a doe? I have to blind hunt with her, she is still squirrely in the stand.

    Hope your wife heals up!!

so i was out 2 nights ago sitting in the stand, its prime time, i have 2 does coming right at me. so i get my camera ready. bow in one hand camera in the other. there about 70 yards out and i know im going to take a doe to see what these f15 can do. all of a sudden my pant leg start vibrating. its my phone and its in my zipper pocket. so i have to get it because the vibrate is so loud. well the deer didnt like that. i could believe that my buddy who is a bowhunter would be texting me at prime time about some useless crap. i was so PO. so my point is, phones are good for texting each other about what coming at them if there in a stand. but not good if you have some friend that are missing a couple brain cells

Best of luck guys..the season is about ready to really kick off for me on October 2nd. I know many of you are going to start hunting hard here soon as well. GOOD luck.

Looks like my wife will require some surgery on her knee and it might be within the next few weeks. Right in the middle of bow season. :( Oh well, at least I am prepared via scouting and will be efficient in my pursuits each hunt.
