My only issue at the moment is I don’t have a stand where I want to be. I have one further back for observation of the area I like to be. Im going to try and go in tomorrow evening and get my stand hung and get out. I don’t like hanging the morning of my hunt, unless I’m trying to be mobile or going to public. Sat tonight. Had 5 does n fawawns and 2 small bucks under 20 yard's. Was pulled back on the biggest doe but it was a twisted shot so I held off.
If I'm putting a stand up or for that matter just about anything I do out there besides hunting, I do it mid afternoon hoping at that time deer are less likely to be moving. I also try and do it either in a light rain or knowing rain is on the way to get my scent out as quickly as possible.
I have a bunch of rain coming next two days so tomorrow is going to be time to get in and out. I’ll be up in that same spot I was in last year Shawn on opening weekend when I saw all those deer. Was some of my best hunting and have several daylight pictures of bucks there. My observation stand is about 125 yards of where they actually come through at. I had some deer eating some acorns about 8 feet from my house last night. Scared the begeezus out of me when I went outside and they bolted. I had to bolt inside to get a new pair of underoos. Good luck to the guys just starting their season. Weather looks right in Wisco as well.
Is anyone doing any hunting this week before the weekend gets here. Looks like a pretty decent cool front is moving through and was wondering if any of you that can hunt already will take advantage of the cold front?
Planning on hunting the opener on 25th, but I have no vehicle except for the Harley. I haven't had a vehicle all summer, which hasn't been a problem, but now having to haul things, possibly a deer, its becoming a hinderance. Hopefully I can swipe the GFs car.
Not on one of those I have an electra glide, and I sold the tour pack because those are for old people but, I did find that I can fit the bow and arrow case inside a double AR soft case, ill rig up some back pack straps, and use the Molle system to attach a backpack. Im sure I can find someone to haul a deer for me if worse comes to worse...
I might try and head out tonight. Been raining nonstop since yesterday and they’re calling for more tonight but sun is out right now. Gonna check the radar around 3:30 and if it looks like it’ll hold off then I’m gonna head out. I’m definitely planning on going before work tomorrow morning and Friday-Sunday are looking great around here with lows in the 40’s and last quarter moon.
I went this morning but only saw a small 5-6 point buck. I thought it was going to be better with the front that went through and a perfect north wind. The property was logged this winter so I'm still learning their new routes. Back at it again this weekend.
Ah, I had my property logged the winter before last, clear cutting on about 1/3 of it and selective timbering for the rest. I was in the same boat last season as you are now and that first season is definitely tough when you have to pretty much relearn your whole property not to mention spending a bunch of time relocating your stands to the new hot spots. On the bright side, it will definitely be worth it in the long run. It’s amazing how much more activity I have this year compared to years past and this is only the second season since they did it. Supposedly the 3rd through the 6th season after the logging is when it really becomes prime deer habitat. One word of advice: go ahead and plan on spending extra time out there late summer in the pre-season. It’s crazy how much things grow up during the second summer after the timbering. The brush is going to be so thick in some areas that you aren’t even going to be able to get through to your stands unless you go in ahead of time and cut yourself some access trails. I can also say from experience that a backpack sprayer and a 5 gallon jug of 41% glyphosphate are your best friends. And a Stihl FS240 with the bike handlebars and their “Brush Knife” style blade has proven to be a real game changer for me. I have actually been keeping that out there on the property since hunting season opened because I am pretty sure that I will need to use it in order to recover a deer if it happens to run more than 50yds into the thick stuff after I shoot it.
Well fellas, I whiffed an EASY 14 yard shot last evening. Had a big doe n 2 fawns coming. I drew when her head was between me and a clump of trees. Of course she stopped right there. I don't know how long I was at full draw but it was longer then I could stand. She finally took a step but I was frazzled. I shot over her. Seems like I miss the first shot every year? Felt good to be in a tree again.
At least it was a clean miss and now you have your miss out of your system for when the big buck comes in. Sent from my SM-N986U using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
I'm planning hunt the Navy Base most of Saturday - nice weather after a spell of heavy rain. I'll be "Hunt Captain" then and will help other hunters recover their deer and check them in. It's a good system as we share intel.
Ended up on an adventure to Columbus, went to this place call otherworld... it was wierd. I didn't get it at all. Gf liked it. Went to cabelas, then a steakhouse... 325dollar bill Best steak I've ever had tho! Then to the price is right show. Now I'm standing in downtown Columbus smoking a cig listening to a heroin zombie sing.... and he's not too bad
I'll be checking cams on Friday to determine my Saturday sits. Although if things play out as they have been I probably already know where I'll be at. If I continue seeing those same 4 big bucks in daylight or even close to daylight I'll probably pass on does. But the next sit after that the does won't be so lucky!!!!!
