Should get 100 points for taking this guy out last night. First coyote with a bow. Killed a red fox a few years back but never a yote.
Friend of mine shot a nice buck this evening but wsn't able to find it. I told him I'd help him look for it in the morning. It's one of the ranch deer, I don't know which one yet. He was on the opposite end of the farm from where I generally see the best "normal resident deer". I don't know if it's one of the regulars or one that wandered in from the surrounding area. I know he won't hold to the ranch minimum of 5 years old. My best guess is that it's this one. I hope it's not, that deer is 3, maybe 4 at best. He has hunting privileges because he used to own that farm and he's a friend of mine and the current land owner. He pretty much gets to shoot whatever makes him happy. If that's the one he shot, he's a great deer though, I hope we can find him.
Okay fellas so here the story the best that I can tell it. I’ve been hunting for 4 years now have been blessed to get permission for good properties so I e never gone a season without a deer but went every season without a buck. I knew when I started this that my first buck wasn’t going to be some little 4 pointer I could hold woh my fingertips lol. So over the last three years I’ve held my trigger on many many little bucks praying and waiting that the big boy would show up. Well toward the start of season I had some nice bucks start showing up including a buck I was calling tall tine aka”TT” he was a sweet 8 point that I put on the list as a shooter if I ever got a chance at him. Well this Thursday was the start of my “rutcation” 5 days taken off to specifically hunt for my first buck. That morning I dropped my brother in law off and drove out to my property later my scent hug my wicks and got settled in, when my phone rang. It was my brother in law. He had forgotten his quiver on the bed. I could have stayed in the stand and said screw him but I opted to get down run to the truck drive them over to him and get back to my stand right at first light peeked threw. Let’s just say the start to my morning was blown. Had a few small does come by but no bucks. I sat in that stand until 1:00 when the wind shifted and was terrible for where I was sitting, now I had a ladder stand on the other end of the property but didn’t like where it was or how it was positioned was more for hunting with the kiddos. But I had no choice because all you guys have told me was “hunt the wind” so I did and walked a few hundred yards over to the stand. Climbed up and was ready to finish the day by 2:00. About an hour went by so I reached in my bag grabbed a mtn dew and a peanut butter sandwich and started my lunch. I was chomping on my sandwich when there he was coming right at me 45 yards out at 3:30 in the afternoon!! I couldn’t believe it I shoved my food into my backpack grabbed my bow turned my camera on and got ready. He came to a little clearing where I was going to take my shot. I took a deep breath let it out. AND FOGGED UP MY GLASSES!!! There was no time to clear them and I panicked and pulled the trigger........... my perfect shot hit far back right infront of the rear leg and he ran off..... I was sick to my stomach. Asked everyone I knew what to do and they all said back out. I went back out at about 9:00 and found little blood and a gut covered arrow..... so o left in fear of jumping him. All night no sleep didn’t know what to do and hating myself for taking the shot. We went back out the next morning and I followed everything you guys told me to do follow the easiest route and head toward water.... I was not confident at all... I walked the open route down the hill and to my surprise!!! There he lay 150 yards for the shot! I couldn’t believe it my hard work years of patience payed up!! I finally did it!!!! so thank you guys for all the support the advice and telling me to stick with it when I was in the dumps. You guys kept me going and practically took me to my first buck! Thank you to all who helped me that Thursday night and Friday morning Mike4christ 2016 Bear Escape Easton FMJ 6mm NAP Doublecross
I helped my buddy look for his deer for four hours this morning but to no avail. It rained last night and washed all the sign out. We just had to beat brush and hope to walk into him. He said he hit him low and back near the paunch and the arrow stayed in, we never found it. Probably gut shot. That area is thick brush and old coal dump ridges, I doubt he'll ever be seen again.
Yes it does. The area back in there was absolutely covered in rubs like this one. From how he described it, the deer he shot is probably the one that made these. That's my ball cap laying on the ground.
As it turned out, he said his bow string was off a while back so he took it to Cabelas and had it restrung with the old string and cable. The tech put a new D-loop on it and now his peep turns out of alignment with his D-loop. He said the buck was stopped when he drew on him but he couldn't see through the peep so he let down and turned it and redrew on the then walking buck. I guess in the heat of the moment he decided not to try to stop him and took a walking shot and didn't lead him enough. Kind of a stupid mistake but he's never had a deer like that in front of him, I'm sure he was plenty rattled. I thought he'd shot enough deer to handle that sort of situation but apparently not. I talked him into hunting that plot, I got him on the deer and he fumbled...I feel bad I couldn't find it. I was kind of hoping one of the monsters didn't walk out in front of him, there are quite a few really nice one's hanging out over there too. I was trying to put him in a situation where he was punching up but not Sugar Ray vs Holyfield, lol. I may take one of the dogs over there tomorrow and see if I can get lucky. I have a hard time thinking the arrow stayed in him and he survived it but I've tracked gut shot deer before and back in those dumps it could be an impossible task to ever find him. I also don't have a good tracking dog. The mutt I had that was turning into a great tracker, is the one that came up missing a couple years ago. I've really got more important things to do than chase a gut shot deer too but I hate to think I might have found him with a little more effort.
Thanks, I appreciate the offer and if you were close I might take you up on it but to be honest I think I'm totally wasting time and energy looking for him further. That bush back in that area and the terrain isn't something I'd wish on an enemy. We grid searched the best of the area back there to cover and I walked through some of the crap but it only gets nastier from there and there's a 30 acre crop field on the other side so I know he's back in that trashy mountain country. Only hope would be if a dog's nose is blessed enough to happen over enough scent to do any good or just get flat out lucky. I don't even know for sure what the deer was. Buddy said he was big but couldn't ID him from pics and didn't count points because he knew he'd get nervous, lol. He lost sight of him after 70 yards, found one dollar bill sized spot of blood and then nothing and then rain washed everything else out. Pretty much the worst case scenario imaginable.
Sounds good. Offer is open anytime. Watch for the Eagles, they might find him. Sent from my SM-N900V using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
We have several eagles around here, they fish over the 35 acre lake right next to this area this deer was shot. I don't know if they'll find him in the thick and rough crap I know he's in though. I suspect they will. If I go to that much work to find him, I don't know if I can overcome the temptation to just keep the head. Lol, like I need another set of antlers laying around.
Helped a family friend to track a big buck his daughter shot last night, she shot it with a crossbow and zippered the lower stomach to the point that guts were falling out. She shot it just after lunch Saturday and backed out. I went with them this morning and they jumped the deer. He stood there for about thirty seconds and then took off and as he was running the guts were falling out further. I told them to back out again. I have never seen anything like it. There isn't much of a puncture wound, it appears the top blade of the broadhead opened the belly. How long do you guys think they should wait? It's obviously fatal, but I don't know how long.
I'd say that's anyones guess. There's really know way to know. My guess would be 12hrs, I could see an argument for 6 or 24 though so to sum up...I don't know either, lol. That's a terrible problem.
That's a crap-shoot for sure. I'd say covey is about as right, on the time frame, as you can guess. Good Luck
I had a friend who shot a deer in the belly and opened him right up. He went after him about 6 hours later and when they bumped him, he took off running and all his guts fell out and he died before making it out the field. Craziest experience for him ever out hunting he said. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
The intestines will continue to fall out and get hung up on branches causing them to pull out more and tear. Sooner or later an artery will get torn and that will be it. Shouldn't be more the 12 hrs.
