Finally got a chance to go back and switch out memory cards again. After seeing nothing but a doe and fawn all summer, my food plot is getting some decent traffic. Multiple does, fawns, and some nice bucks that came through. Sadly I don't have Stealth Cams so my pics aren't really worth posting. ...but....the BIG boys are back! I'm assuming there are 2 different 10's, a super nice big 8 that looks like a very young bodied deer, and a couple other smaller ones. Again, my pics are blurry and at night so it's really hard to be sure. I'm also dialed in to 60 yards, so my stand that only has 20 yard shots and under should be golden. I think I'll keep holding off on hunting until middle to late October. Good luck to everyone else! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Well good morning boys and girls! I'm back with your Monday morning update. Friday afternoon I went back into the same spot I was at last Saturday on WI public. Much better weather conditions and no other people around. Ended up seeing 6 deer, 4 of which were bucks. Nothing huge but it felt good to see living deer! I did have a doe in bow range but being almost 2 miles from the truck I opted to pass on the shot. I love shooting deer but if I'm putting forth that amount of effort on a recovery it better have antlers on it's head. Last night I got out as well. Hit a new piece of public closer to home for the first time. Going in blind I had no idea what to expect and it took me longer than anticipated to find a spot and get set up. Ended up seeing two young bucks and passed shots on both of them. Got some decent footage and will have an update on this week's BHOD. All in all not a bad night. Felt good to have deer within bow range the past 2 sits. Looks like the next time I get out will be Friday evening and I really have no idea where I'm gonna go. It may be my last trip to WI public for this year as IL opens next week and I'll focus a little more on killing a deer on one of the properties I've paid through the nose to lease. May as well get my money's worth.
Thanks for the update Justin, I just don't know how you have been dealing with the mosquitoes out there.
I am hoping to make it out for the first time this coming weekend. My camera's have been sitting for 6 or 7 weeks so I am dying to get to the property and check them. There are going to be thousands of pictures to review which can sometimes be a pain but I'm up for the challenge. I think this week I will be building a hay bale blind for my dad to use. Might be a little late to be adding a blind to the mix but our place is in ag country so hopefully it wont stick out too bad.
In SW WI they are bad but not horrible. I think the hilly terrain makes it so there's not as much standing water around for them to breed in. Here close to home I thought I was going to die last night. I almost considered leaving all my gear and running back to my truck as fast as I could. It was AWFUL. Thankfully once I got in a tree and got the Thermacell fired up it kept them at bay enough so I could get through the hunt. Hands down the worst mosquitoes I've ever experienced while hunting. It's unreal. On a plus note we finally got confirmation that one of the bucks we were hoping survived the season is still around. He's a 4 year old this year and will be one of the primary targets once the IL season opens.
In my experience the deer pay little to no attention to hay bale blinds. It's crazy. I think you'll be in good shape.
I’m out on my first sit of the year. Beautiful evening! It’s the coolest it’s been all year at 80 degrees and we’re expected to warm up to mid 80s for the next week. It makes for a hot walk-in and setup but nice when you finally get situated. Getting about that time so I’ll fill y’all in when I get back to the car. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well I wasn’t able to see anything last night but that’s not too surprising. I was a little louder than I wanted to be getting in and set up. I’m definitely not as efficient with my run and gun setup as I’d like to be. Plus it’s heavier than a cow. Hopefully as the season progresses I’ll find more tricks to be faster and quieter. I plan to go back to the same spot tonight and hunt. I left the setup in the tree so I should be able to slip in and surprise them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A few more days for Ohio woot. My hunting partner has seen 2 or 3 nice bucks on the golf course. We really wont get much of an opportunity to hunt it until October ect. Once the golfers are off we will be there. This weekend I am going to hunt some public land that it along the river by my house, its pretty small and I never see cars down there but there are beans and corn there still good bedding and the river which is up because of all the rain.
Finally in the woods for the 1st time this year. 32 degrees this morning, in the 50s now. Bumped 3 doe walking in. Let's see what the next 3 hours bring. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Yep, this weather is finally feeling like fall. About damn time. Hoping to get out for one last WI public mission tomorrow night before IL opens next week. Going to try yet another new spot I've never been in before. Thank God for OnX maps! Probably the best money I've spent on anything hunting related in a long time.
I will finally be in a tree tomorrow afternoon, pretty excited. Was up until 1am getting all of my stuff put together for the weekend. I cobbled together an ozone closet and treated everything last night. Cost me $55 total. If you guys cant tell, I am a cheap ass. If I can do it myself for less I always do. Good luck to anyone hunting this weekend.
Hunted Friday night and saw a lone button buck wandering around like he was lost, then saw a big doe right at dark. She came through my pinch on the only trail that was too far to shoot. Figures. Not sure when I'll be out this week. Looking like possibly Thursday and/or Friday afternoon.
I hunted Saturday and Sunday night. Saturday was great, saw 11 does and fawns. Two does in range but one had a fawn with her and the other one was on the small side. Sunday had some turkeys come through but they veered off at 40yrds and I also saw two fawns chasing each other at 100+ yards. Was great to be out hunting again. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
Yes that is snow. On October 1st. Too bad I still can't hunt since we are still trying to harvest/move grain. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
Yes! If we wouldn't have over 2000 acres of beans to combine then I would be almost happy..haha. And they're actually calling for another 1-3 inches on Wednesday/Thursday... Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
