Stupidly passed on a shooter buck thus morning. Decided to take the evening off with a few buddies and go drinking downtown. Gonna hit it hard next week.

What a weird start to the season this has been. Everything is backwards.

I'm starting to think EHD has taken a bigger toll on the herd near my uncles than I was expecting. Nobody has really heard much around that area so haven't heard anything bad. Haven't seen my uncle yet to ask him. Opening day I seen 0 deer, very odd for this land especially on the first day when they are not as spooky. I chalked it up to the moon, set out a trail cam and figured it would show night movement or normal activity while I wasn't hunting. I also mentioned the dead deer I had seen in the field across the street.

Get there today, I drive by that corner where the dead deer lay but it was too dark to see anything. Seen 4 antlerless deer cross the street off the property and head into the cut field. Thought it was a good sign. Got near the stand and had a deer blow at me, I was 50 yds from the stand but had to walk down to a creek crossing and back to the stand. At 8:40 I happened to catch a glimpse of a deer turn the corner by where I set the trail cam, 2 others followed and the last bound off with tail up. Gave it another 45 and climbed down and swapped cards in the trail and headed towards home. On the way out, I could see buzzards flying up ahead as i was coming down the private road/drive. The deer from opening day, what remained of it was still there, but there were 3 others out in the field as well. They were all down to fleshy skeletons. It was either EHD, joy ride shooting or the farmer had nuiscance tags(deer have to be let lay) but the crops had already been harvested so rule that out.

Decided on the way home i was going to hit public land, still had to go home grab a stand, cart and print a window parking permit for the site. Looked at the trail cam card while I was home, and in just shy of 5 days it had pics of 4 deer, a raccoon, squirrel and a coyote(from 6:50 this morning, maybe his scent had deer edgy). This is a heavily used trail and I can see 4 deer in one sighting multiple times in a sit. Something isn't right.

Public land I seen 3 deer within 40 yds hunting from the ground. I had the doe broadside but in my position I could not see the fawns and was reluctant to pull back and spook them. They got downwind and skittish so they walked away unharmed.

Now I have to decide whether to pursue public land or hope that things improve on my uncles. Either way I'm going to take a week or two off, probably just one, and ponder it all. It's a bit discouraging, but that's why they call it hunting.

Sorry for the long winded post, just typing it all out before I consume vast amounts of alcohol.

It's al good, a harsh dose of reality isn't always a bad thing. I'm fortunate to have private land to hunt.

I might find myself out this coming weekend, looking like a real possibility of a severe weather breakout next weekend so I'll have to see where that unfolds at. It's about the same drive for me whether its private or public, it's dragging the deer out that has the biggest difference. Man power vs horsepower

CLS...that doesn't sound good. I hope things pick up for you. Thank God we don't have an EHD problem.

    Weekend recap.
Friday. Saw two does, a buck (I think), a ton of ground hogs. Pretty happy with that stand on the Corp ground though. So far out of 4 sits in that stand between my buddy and we have seen deer every time.

Saturday afternoon- Got skunked. Think thats more of a morning stand anyway just wanted to sit there for some reason.

Sunday morning-Saw 9. 8 does, 3 of which offered really nice shots at 12 yards but my stand is in a tree with a fork and just couldn't get maneuvered around the fork. Offered another at 38 but I told myself nothing over 35. Also saw a the wide 7 I have on cam but he was down in the bottoms and never really got within 70 or 80 yards.

Girlfriend got the day off so I am going to hang out with her and hit it again next weekend.

Ok Fitz here's the video u asked about with ROBO doe that I shot and couldn't find after 5 hours of tracking. It's so funny to watch because she sees me and tries to wind me but can't . My camo bibs were drying so I just had on blue jeans and a camo shirt and I swear that is what gave me away. But be fore-warned the video is 5 mins and the mount I made is shakey when I shoot. It's not like tv quality or nothing. And I was shaking like a leaf lol I was tore up over a doe but I love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDC5tFDWZEQ

Yeah, looks like she hunched good as she took off, but it's hard to slow it down on youtube. It's a bummer you could find her, but unfortunately that part of bowhunting. Get back out there :tu:

Was out last week, Saturday and Sunday.

I should have stayed home last week as I was sicker than a dog......saw a doe and fawn but another deer ended up busting me....dumb.

Saturday was the best hunt so far. 16+ deer confirmed......5 different bucks. The big boy showed himself for a brief moment then gone. I pretty 130+ white racked 8 pt I think was 3.5 years old showed up...about fifty yards out. 3 small bucks..... lots of does and fawns. Saw other deer skirting the area that I did not see later. I figure 20+ deer.

Sunday going to my stand and kicked a doe up about 10 yards from my stand...I stopped as she did not see me....she ran off about 30 yards and stopped.......she sat there for about 15 minutes.....I just stood there. She got comfortable again and bedded back down. Well that stand was not to be as I did not want her running through the bedding area and kicking out more deer. Plan B......took my time sneaking to the next stand making sure not to spook her out....did it. Got to the plan B stand.....not the best option but what do you do? cannot head back through there. Saw a doe and two fawns but no shot opts. Then about 30 turkeys decide to roost 50 yards all the way around me.......that was it for me last night.

Heading north Thursday....but that area is buck only.

Well this am I seen one doe and my buddy seen 6 on the other side of the farm HOWEVER I experienced one of the coolest things yet while hunting. I hear two bucks either sparing or actually fighting . I'm sitting there watching the doe of the day and I hear BOOM horns slam together. Rattle around for a second then it stops. A snort wheeze and lots of movement on the leaf covered Forrest floor. Don't know how big or how many but it didn't take long to determine who was boss, seen a small buck exit the wood line and haul the mail in te opposite direction of all the racquet. Idk if they were fighting or sparing but it was cool. I'm on the stand again this afternoon enjoying this nice weather .

Just a quick heads up, when posting your two photos in the official contest thread you must include the date and time of the kill. Have been informed that any entries lacking this will not be credited to the team score.

Now, just need to get some deer on the ground. I won't know if I'm working the weekend until Wed. or Thurs. Will only have to work until 2:30 if if I do so should be good for an evening sit on Friday, and if not working will attempt a morning sit Saturday weather permitting and should be good for a morning sit Sunday regardless.

Think I'm going to change up my strategy a bit, going to hunt mornings and evenings but will do mornings on private land and head to public on the way home for evenings until the rut starts. Don't know if it will work, but feel its my best option at the moment.

    Update
Looks like our weather is taking a turn back to the warm. I should have gone out today looks like the last descent day to go for at least the next 10 days. South winds and temps in the upper 70s for the foreseeable future and I don't get out in temps like that. Uncomfortable and meat spoils way to quick.

In some good news my hunting buddy harvested his first deer of his life. A nice little 6 point. Shot it out of the stand on the Corp ground I keep talking about. Unfortunately he hit it far back and there wasn't much of a blood trail. He shot it 6pm Sunday night and we finally found it 6pm Monday night. Lost the meat it was about 70 Monday and he got into the guts quite a bit. But still I believe it was a good learning experience for him and you could just see in his eye that he was proud of it even though we did lose the meat. He still has a doe tag so now its on to apply what he learned the other night and put the next one down quickly.

I haven't been out since Saturday night with all this rain/sleet/snow mix we've been getting. Plus the wind has been bad for where I want to be. I'm heading out tonight despite it being 18-25 mph winds. After that, looks like Sat will be my next hunt.

Those are some great days to be in the woods BS!
