You're right...Those 2's and 3's out grew his brow tines by to much. Plus, he's got little feet! It's time for him to go.
Well yesterday morning & afternoon, as well as this morning were all a complete bust. Yesterday was predicted to be on and off showers all day but instead we got downpours throughout the day with a couple big thunderstorms in the morning and evening. I don’t like getting struck by lightning so I didn't even go out. Got up this morning and the rain had cleared but it was all kinds of foggy. The fog was so thick that I came within about 6” of driving my golf cart straight into the pond on #16 while I was heading to the stand. Golf cart headlights apparently aren’t designed with fog in mind so they basically just create a wall of light in front of you. Eventually I did manage to make it to the stand and got up in the tree and settled. I was hoping the fog would burn off once the sun rose but it wasn’t until around 9:30 - 10 before it had even thinned out enough for me to be able to see the ground right under my stand. I stayed up there until around 11 in case there were some late movers as the fog lifted but I never saw anything and after an hour or so had gone by I was so pissed off about the weather that I wasn’t having much fun so I decided to call it for the morning. I did hear a bunch of deer moving past my stand from sunrise through mid morning and it sounded like most of them were coming in close enough to shoot. I couldn’t see a damn thing so it’s possible I am being a little overoptimistic and what I was actually hearing was a bunch of possums and squirrels frolicking in the leaves. Planning to go back out this afternoon if the weather cooperates. Supposed to be drizzle and showers with a chance of some thunderstorms but right now it is still fairly overcast so hopefully that will cut down on the solar heating and keep those showers from getting enough energy to turn into thunderstorms.
Good luck this afternoon. Sometimes you just have to wait for better days. When I hear things that sound like deer, I just assume it is. Haha. But most times its probably me dreaming.
Good luck if you make it out this afternoon! I’m with Holt. If I can hear it but can’t see it it’s a deer lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good luck this afternoon! I'm like you, I don't play with electricity, I'll wait for better days lol. Glad you didn't take that golf cart swimming lol
Sorry, just seen this or I could have helped you. Looks like you're starting a week before us. I'm going to pour some yellow acorns out at the house this week and get a camera up to see what all is around.
I'm kind of surprised that no one has dropped a doe in the contest yet. Usually I have one down in the first few days, but the woods is different this year. Not sure what it is yet. This will force me to relearn my hunting grounds and keep me from being complacent and relying on old spots. This might be a tough season for me and force me to push a little harder, we will see. Just to warn you guys. Don't know if any of you have followed along on some of my hunts the past few years, but for some reason crazy things seem to happen to me in the deer woods. So be prepared for some fun storys! Lol
Yesterday afternoon was a bust. Didn’t see anything which was probably my fault. The stand I decided to hunt from was one that I relocated a couple weeks ago to a new spot. Having never hunted that spot I wasn’t sure exactly which direction they would be coming from and that combined with the first hunt jitters meant I was constantly turning to check behind me and moving around looking at every single squirrel or rustle in the leaves I happened to hear. Pretty sure a lot of deer were planning to come by me but they all saw me moving from 100’s of yds away and decided they would be better off taking a different route.
I wish I had some acorns, our acorn drop has been dismal so far. Not sure what it is. The vast majority of our oak trees are barren. I’ve only seen 2 trees that have any acorns at all, both red oaks, and the acorns they’re dropping aren’t even fully formed, they’re literally the size of peas. I don’t know what it is because I was at my buddy’s house Friday and his yard was covered with them. Every single one of his white and red oaks was just raining down huge nice acorns. I don’t get how the acorn production in two locations that are less than 5 miles apart can be so different. It’s not like he got more rain or better weather.
Well so much for tonight’s hunt… We haven’t had a drop of rain in 2 months and starting opening day we have had thunderstorms 4 straight mornings and on 3 out of 4 evenings
That's what I've noticed in my many years on this earth. If you have a dry summer, it's usually followed by a wet fall. Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk
I’m all about some fun stories! Bring them on! I figured one of you early guys would have us 240 points by now lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Since we process our own deer. I'm not dropping a doe if this warm weather still here (in 80's yet). And my wife will out of town that opening weekend too. So I won't have help. BUT.... if it's one of the big bucks we have on trail cam come thru I will shoot.. LOL I may have to take a day off work to get it all cut up. But it would be worth it for one of the bucks.
Sorry Ive been absent, had back to back wedding weekends. Love the team name and avatar. I was impulsive and impatient and drove 6 hours and snuck away to MD to hunt opening day and then drove 6 hours back lol. Saw a bunch of deer and some decent bucks, my buddy i went with ended up arrowing a nice doe so not a waisted trip. Season in CT opens Thursday and I should be in tree for that.
So that's a good question for you guys. What are your standards on a buck this season? I like to tell my self to hold out for a mature buck. That will usually put them in the 115 - 150" range for score. The problem is I usually only get 1 or 2 shots a year at a mature buck. I also have a bad habit of shooting big 2 1/2 year old bucks, lol! For now I will hold off and only shoot for mature buck. But come late season if it hasn't happened, I'm shooting what ever to fill the freezer. How about you guys? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
