Good luck! Hopefully you get some movement this evening. The best persimmon tree on our place is right in my driveway Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
About 30 minutes ago I had a doe and 2 fawns walk right up the trail I came in on. Didn't expect that. They got to 5 yards and stood there. After 10 minutes they turned around and went back. I wasn't ready, sitting down and had bow hanging up. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Well I was set up in a stand just inside the tree line adjacent to some persimmon trees by a putting green on a par 3 - climbed up around 5 and it was nice out - low humidity with a nice breeze. First time I had hunted the stand so I spent the first half hour or so with my rangefinder memorizing some distances to various trees and such. Once I had that fairly well down I sat back and started noticing that I needed to come back with the pole saw and work on my shooting lanes a little more. So I took a couple photos and started marking them up with the branches I needed to cut. Around 5:45 I spotted a herd of 6 deer moving across the golf course heading towards the persimmon trees - 4 does, a fawn, and a spike. Stood up, grabbed my bow, and got ready. Half an hour went by and they were all hanging out just out of range munching on persimmons and none of them even acted like they were going to come into range. I started thinking I needed to move my stand to a different tree - if I were in my other climber or a ladder stand I would’ve probably actually climbed down and approached them on foot but the climber I was in is noisy to climb down so I was stuck. When I first put this stand there I had actually wanted to put it on a different tree that would’ve had them in range the entire time but when I walked up to the tree I discovered one of those giant furry poison oak vines on the far side and I was sure I would’ve gotten poison trying to remove that so I had settled on this tree. Either way I was stuck here for tonight. Around 6:15 I started to hear golfers approaching a couple holes out and I figured that once they got close they would bump the deer off. Maybe towards me or maybe away from me. About that time I saw another doe off to my right walking towards the main group to my left and if she continued on her present course she would come by my stand within range. Sure enough she walked on the other side of a bush right in front of me so I drew back and she emerged from behind the bush broadside at 25 yds. She leaned down to get a bite of grass and I hit my release and heard the thwap sound of a an arrow hitting deer. The shot felt good but my luminok didn’t light up and I didn’t see the impact so I had a little apprehension in the back of my mind that I could’ve made a bad shot. Then I hear a bunch of folks talking and then one says “I think somebody just shot it” and “holy **** did you see all that blood” then some hooting and hollering. Turns out that those golfers had just pulled up to the teebox when I shot. First time I’ve ever had an audience. I was confident then that I had got her because if they could see blood at 150yds she was bleeding pretty good. Figured it would be an easy track since I had 4 people who saw where she went it was an hour before sundown, and she was bleeding heavily. Well I was wrong. Turns out she ran 100yds into some chest high bamboo grass. This stuff: It is damn near impossible to track blood in because there is 4’ of grass between you and the blood. I was about to give up after 3 hours of crawling through that mess but finally I found her. All and all a good first hunt. Still think I am going to move that stand closer to those persimmon trees though. Maybe use one of my hang-ons because the only tree that’s closer and suitable for a climber is the one with the poison Ivy.
That's what I'm talking about right there! You early guys are coming out swinging! Sent from my SM-T500 using Tapatalk
Sounds like a heck of an evening. That’s crazy those guys seen it go down lol. I don’t mess with poison anything. If the wind blows I get that crap. Best thing I’ve found to do it cut it at the base then come back a week later with a long sleeve shirt and gloves and cut it down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We're at 18% on our 50 point kills for the year before most of us can even hunt. Only 9 more doe to go! Would be pretty sweet to all have a 50 pointer.
They do add up fast for the team points. Plus it's a great confidence booster for when that big buck walks in! Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Yes sir I agree. Takes the edge off lol. I havent killed one in several years now. Usually try and get two bucks but I may go ahead and get one earlt this year.
