Back from my elk hunt - lot of fun but glad to be back! Was an interesting hunt to say the least. Had two possible opportunities on the first morning and then never had another shot opp the rest of the hunt. Was in close on a few nice bulls but just couldn't close the deal. Elk were really active right at the beginning of the hunt, then the rain came. 2 days straight of rain to be exact - I have seen where elk will just go crazy once a rain like that finally stops - but it was the exact opposite - like it just beat them down.... Then - they cleared\evacuated the National Forest because the govt was launching something into space at a nearby base and the booster was expected to come down in the area... Long story short, lost 3 valuable days - but hey, that's hunting... Maybe next year :-) I got the team list updated, looks like everyone is now checked in so we should be ready to rock!
Wow SDH, I would be a little upset about being cleared from the area, but then again, I have not been elk hunting...YET. As far as the animals, it had to be awesome to see those elk so close! Were you able to capture any video or pictures?
i got a doe this morning at 615 am from a ground blind 35 yard shot i put it on the scorecard hear is a pic i put the 2 pics on the scorecard
Congrats on your doe! Be sure to post two pics that include your bow or they wont count. Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
Get this...I'm never online when I hunt but thus couldn't wait. I'm sittin in my stand & I hear someone honking a horn for a few minutes. Then get a phone call from a private number. I ignore it. Then I get a text message from a number I don't know. Here's the text: "It's the sheriff's dept. Need ur truck moved" So I had to get down and move my truck so a combine and 3 semis could get in the corn field to chop it. I am now patiently waiting for them to push deer to me. I hope this isn't a glimpse of my season to come. Keep ya posted.
Good Work! Thanks for taking the time to 'get it done'! Congratulations on the nice doe and by the looks of the pictures... great shot! I shot my first doe ever last year and I can say I have been missing out. I really enjoy the hunts where I am focused on shooting a doe, it keeps me sharp, it's great practice and the meat is terrific. I hope to knock down a couple more before the end of the season.
lol, That's crazy! I'd like to know how they got your number? Anyway, how did things turn out.. did they end up kicking anything towards you? Good luck with that situation, your hunting should be pretty good still until they clean the leftovers. Good Luck with that!
WOW...Sounds like a not so good hunt. I am sure you enjoyed part of it though...Wished you could have put a tag on something but like you said "There is always next year"...I would have been a little flustered about having to leave as well...
While chopping corn, they did kick 2 nice does my way but they were in a hurry. The first doe stopped in my food plot for about a minute but stayed about 60 yds out and quickly left and the 2nd does cruised through, not even thinking of stopping. I left my stand and as I got to the edge of the field it was a little darker than I had hoped. They had about 3 rounds chopped so I scanned the field and thought to myself, "Boy they did a horrible job, they left a bunch of stalks standing." The "stalks" blow at me and grew white tails and ran into the woods. It was too dark to see what they were. That field did produce a bunch geese for me and my neighbor the next morning giving us our 2 man limit.
Got a couple of new cheaper hang on stands put together last night. I've got a solid day of stand work (got about 4 I want to hang yet), so hopefully can get rest of my stands hung in the next couple of weeks so I'm ready to rock during 'prime time'.... With the dry weather, the crops are really flying out of the fields this year - so the hunting around here could be decent this year... Time will tell :-)
Guys I am confused....In my first 6-7 years of bowhunting I missed one deer. Last year I missed 2...This year I hate to say two weeks into the season I have missed 4 does!! The yardages were 25, 33, 38, & 48. The deer at 25 and 48 didn't drop and inch and I gave the bottom of their chest hair cuts. The other dropped at least 10-12 inches. The most recent miss was last night. I have always aimed at the bottom because of how skiddish the deer are around here. Out of the 30+ deer I have shot all of them have dropped somewhat at the sound of the shot...My dilemma now is where to aim. I know the whole scoop as far as watching their body language and all that but those practices have all went out the door with these 4 misses. I guess I will start aiming for the top of the heart and hope they cooperate. Both of the arrows the two does ducked would have hit them in the lungs just behind the heart...This sucks..I missed more deer in 2 weeks than I have in 9 years of bowhunting....this sucks lol...
Tough luck NC... I would continue to play off the deer's body language and aim at a skitish deer low (unless it's at 20 yrds or less) however you can't go wrong with aiming at the top of the heart, in theory, that should give you enough play for a 6-8 inch drop and still kill em. I shot my doe at 31 yrds and after watching the video in slowmo it's evident that she dropped at least 6 inches and she was as calm and cool as could be. I personally will aim low for any shot outside 30 yrds regardless of the body language. Keep at it Pal! It's just one of those things that you can't do much about, just continue to pick that spot and try to hit it! GOOD LUCK!
