Sorry my comments seem out of left field. I was replying to someone's and it didn't show the original comment with my reply. Guess I will figure it out by the end of the season. Sent from my SM-G986U using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
This is my second season with a deer tag and only my third season since getting my license. I picked up the bow in 2019 and set a goal that my first tag turkey, deer, pig, or bear would be with a bow. In southern California, public land, archery only and DIY, it has been one of the most challenging things i've done. After all the crap they've given me and not wavering from this goal, this year I have some friends from the NWTF and Wildlife Federation that are invested in seeing my success with this goal. I'm heading out this weekend for the first attempt at the season. I have 3 camera's out. One has not reported since day 1, 1 has been blocked by a leaf for 2 weeks and the other has only picked up some very shady activity from other hunters. Including a poacher, a guy walking with a BIG knife in fist and few minutes later him walking back with a tree stand under his arms, and possible sex trafficking/kidnapping. The only deer signs I have right now are the bachelors group I bumped when setting up cameras 2 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to putting a rack on the score board for Team Whooping Ass this year. Glad to be part of this community.
Agi this site is a wealth of knowledge with a great group of people we will all help anyway we can. Any question ask someone will answer and it doesn’t matter what team they are on it’s a community that will always help.
I had a thrilling 1st day. I still have not punched a tag but... I went out later in the day for a spot and stalk. Started following a deep groove in the tall grass that had 2 piles of fresh droppings. Not even 2 minutes of tracking and a doe popped her head up. from behind a log and stared me down straight forward for a good 2 minutes. I had enough time check my tag and make sure I was safe. I knelt down and ranged her butt at about 60-69 yards. (It was hard to hold the range finder steady). I drew back and lost her in my sight picture. As I'm stuck in full draw on one knee, another doe walked out from behind a tree, quartering toward. She stared me down as I marked her in my sight picture. The moment she turned broadside I let it fly. She must have been much closer and I didn't account for it. They both did the squat and run as my arrow went a foot over her shoulders. As I walked to recover my arrow, still trembling from the near miss, another doe came down the hill to check out the commotion. She stared me down for a few seconds and then quartered away slowly. I ranged her at 50 yards, got her in my sights, gave a little grunt and she went broadside. Let it fly and heard the crack and crunch of my arrow hitting a branch and burying in the leaves. I didn't even see what it hit or where it went, my eyes were on the doe skipping away through the trees. I recovered my first arrow piercing through a log stopped on the fletches. I got lucky with the second arrow, only the knock was sticking out from the leaves about 20 degrees off and 10 yards beyond where I aimed. Both arrows were still in great shape with no signs of a hit. Not even 5 minutes later I spotted a buck's head and rack about 50 yards up hill beyond heavy brush and trees. I didn't have a clean sight so I tried to get in closer and around the brush when I got caught on a branch, lost balance and crunched every leaf, branch and twig my feet could find. I had a beautiful view of that buck a split second before it ran down the other side of the crest and out of my life. I circled that bedding area for a few more hours with no more activity. After the rush subsided, I was glad those shots didn't land. The tag I have for either sex gives me an additional 4 hunt weeks into December. I would have been limited to the buck only tag that ends before Thanksgiving. Overall that 4 hour hunt was the closest and most thrilling hunt day I've had since i've started. I still have not successfully killed anything yet but I can see now how much my persistence and patience and limited experience is paying off. I'm remaining optimistic that this will be the year. I'm heading up again on Saturday morning to give it another full day before I'm forced to take a 2 week break. Fingers crossed and prayers up that my next post includes 2 pictures of a dead buck.
