Well, both bows are as ready as they will ever get. All my clothes, hunting gear, sleeping bag, etc. are ready to go. Tonight I'll load my wifes SUV, put the 4-wheeler on the trailer, fill a cooler with junk food and be ready for the road. Friday I'll leave work at 11:00 AM and go pick up Russ, (Kanga, aka Ausie-guy). Then its off to west Tx and our opening day Saturday morning. Wind will determine if I hunt with the longbow or the Marquis. I can't hardly stand the wait but at least its close.
Hey Greg/MO, when are you making your first trip to IL? I'll be at my place on Wednesday before sunrise. Maybe Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday too. The weather is supposed to get real nice for hunting.
John, would you believe it that I've got a district sales meeting scheduled for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1???? I think this is like four out of the last six years I have some work conflict on opening day... So I'll be over there Oct. 2... and 3rd... and 4th... and 5th... and 6th... LOL Actually, probably not. I'll hunt the first couple days after the opener, and then it'll be sporadic at best during the week, hitting the weekends harder, until late October. THEN it'll be 3-4 times a week for a while.
well guys I'm back from my weekend in west Texas with an empty ice chest. There were a few does and some feral hogs seen but nothing gave us a shot opportunity. I had fun hunting with Russell although I got a bit frustrated with him as well. He asked me to meet him at a natural ground blind he was hunting and when I got there he was sitting there with his boots off stinkin the place up! Oh well, I explained my feelings and we moved on. I must have done my share of stinkin the place up too. Saturday evening while sitting at another ground blind with my longbow a doe started blowing at me. Whether she picked me off or winded me I don't know. The wind was swirling a bit. I was set up on a feeder, she circled around blowing the whole time and then she was gone. It was getting close to sundown so I decided to spray down again and hope for something to come in from the other direction and soon enough a bunch of feral hogs could be heard making there way in. My heart got to racing when I started to see ears through the brush at only about 10 yards away. Just a few more feet and I'd break in the new longbow! Wrong, winded again. The wind had been from the hogs to me,(I could easily make out their distinct smell), but a quick wind shift and a few squeels and my hunt was over. So I got some excitement and some time in the woods with a friend but no meat for the freezer. I'll be back at it this weekend at the east Texas place!

Sounds exciting, Greg! I set up my new ground blind (Primos Predator Ground Max from Cabela's) for the first time last night in a public spot not far from home here and took my boy with me... We had an abosolute blast!!! The way that thing packs up in its case with shoulder straps leaves your hands free to carry lots of stuff, and since the only other thing I NEEDED was my bow... I could carry a small soft-side cooler in, a water jug, some paper and a pen for my boy to draw with, his little bow and arrow set, a toy truck... He fell asleep for about an hour, and it was just SO cool knowing that something could literally walk by at 3-4 steps.. Once, I thought I heard something making its way to us in the corn field behind us, but who knows? It could have been a mouse. EVERY sound seemed so exagerated in that blind. Lots of fun though!! Oh, and I got to wear cargo shorts, a short-sleeve t-shirt and my Morrell water shoes... how cool is dressing like that for deer hunting?
Greg I tried wearing shorts under a mesh bug suit once. I found out that chiggers go right through that mesh. Never again! I'll keep the long pants on when I hunt. I was miserable for days after that deal. I'll be setting my ground blind up this weekend too. I may leave it in the woods for a while.
Speaking of chiggers. Those little rascals are really really bad this year. I have had more of them this year than the last 5 years alltogether.
It's almost time for opening day #2. Wednesday the IL season opens up. I will be up in a stand on my property well before daylight. Not sure which one yet. I was up there this weekend snooping around a little. There are way more acorns than I thought there was gonna be. They are just starting drop pretty good. That changes things as far as which stand I will be in. With this cold front blowing thru tonight and the nighttime temps supposed to be in the low 40's. I am pumped up for this one. It will be the first time deer hunting on my new property. Not sure I really want to shoot a doe early if the opportunity is there. I really want to kinda take inventory of what is walking around before I stir things up by shooting one. I won't be sleeping much tomorrow night.
Well, good luck goes without saying John. I'm so happy for you getting to hunt your own land over in Illinois; that's just totally awesome. And the cool thing, Greg... was that I didn't have a bug suit on either. JUST cargo shorts and a Predator camo short-sleeve t-shirt. It was awesome.
well guys I'm off to east Tx today. The camper is packed and ready to roll. I'll be leaving work at 11:00 and I won't be back on line until Sunday night unless I get one on the ground earlier. Wish me luck! See ya monday.
Ok, I'm back fron the first 2 days of the IL season. Saw a bunch of deer just nothing I wanted to shoot. It was gonna be a HOLY COW buck these 2 days or nothing. But I learned a lot just watching the deer I did see. I saw a doe and 2 young ones opening morning. Then in the afternoon I sat over one of my food plots that have been getting hammered. It is Biologic Hot Spot with a wheat strip along side. The first deer came out at 2:55, a 2 year old 10 point . He made a scrape across the feild from me and walked back into the woods. Then a doe with a fawn and 2 yearling bucks come out and feed my way. They got to within 30 yards and the wind switched and they took off. After that another doe with 2 fawns fed to within 40 yards and decided to go on across the field. 2 more does came out but got spooked by a coyote in the field. At the other end of the field I could more deer out in my other wheat plot at least 4 over there. Altogether I saw 15 deer that night. This morning I went back out and saw 2 turkeys. No shots. Then tonight I moved to where 7 of the deer came out last night. They decided to use the 2nd ridge down tonight. I saw 4 or 5 head into the plot. And another couple came thru the field from another direction. This weekend I may start to thin the doe population if they cooperate. _____________________________
I just received a text that says we have 50 more points to put on the board. I'll let him tell the story.
I posted the story in the main forum here... http://forums.bowhunting.com/yaf_postst777_Double-dose-of-does.aspx A quick pic:
