Came close to getting a doe this afternoon. Had her at roughly 10 yards but no shot. Her fawn had already passed me but then a passing vehicle startled him back by his mom. They then turned and went basically straight away from me keeping the brush and trees between us. Such a rush having deer that close when Hunting from the ground and they don't have a clue you are there.
Sorry for the delay. We drove home yesterday, I processed him and passed out early! Story: We left Louisiana around midnight Saturday Nov. 5th We got up there. Scouted around some places that we have had luck before but I knew I wanted to go hunt this ridge top I’ve sat in the past just to see what was out there. I told dad that I wanted to get in the bottom adjacent to it but the wind was wrong. Hour before dark I see a hell of a buck down there in that bottom, of course. I text dad saying, "Saw a dandy in that bottom. He has a phenomenal right side but something was off with the other side. No doubt shooter." All week the winds are south except for Tuesday evening. That afternoon I got down there, hung my saddle and hunted. Saw 3 small bucks and 1 doe. I bounced around the next few days, hoping to run into one but having Friday’s cold front as my last-ditch effort. The front pushed through overnight on Friday. Winds NW. Let’s Go! I get in there early. Climb up and settle in. Right at first light one of the bucks I saw the other day shows up. Good start. Then I see a 4pt. Then another one of the bucks I saw the other night. Around 8 I see the 3rd buck I had seen. I text dad “I’ve seen all the bucks that were down here except the big one.” 8:30 I hear a deer snort wheeze. (Legit first time I’ve heard a wild deer do that) I look to my 8 o’clock and he’s standing there bowing up to the first buck I saw. That buck says aw hell no and walks away. This buck ends up walking to 5’ from my tree without giving me a shot. We lock eyes. “Oh ****!” - him “Oh ****!” – me He bounds off. I start yelling “MEHP MEHP” He stops in some trash. He’s behind a tree and I can just see his shoulder forward but I have a fairly clean path. I put my pin right on the edge of tree he was behind and sent it Mule kick. Gone. Immediately called my dad. “I STUCK HIM!” I was pumped but there was still some uncertainty, in my mind, about the shot. I couldn’t see my arrow on the ground but I know the nock buried in him. I got down after 20 min and find my arrow and the back 8” were broken off. I see blood. Good blood. Trailed him 40 yards to the creek he crossed, which was too deep for me to cross. I packed out and had to go around. I get to the last place I saw him and he’s piled up in a gulch 5 yards off the creek bank.
Chilly morning but welcoming the WNW that has some deer moving and up on their feet. Two little bucks so far cruised by and ran off a doe. Hopefully things pick up soon. Last week of hunting before the gun season opens on Saturday. Yuk
Can you check your score sheet? Looks like you have 2 abnormals counted that are under 1". Those would not count if accurate and score would be off by 1 1/8". Great buck none the less, congrats again!
Three year old 7, unfortunately I don’t have any neighbors that will pass this buck up. I have have him a pass. Hopefully I run into Gus this week before gun season starts on Saturday
Going to need another update, including redoing the scorecard I believe. I'm not seeing a G4 on his left side, for the 1 4/8 measurement. Any chance you can rescore it? I don't believe it is going to fly as is. Unless I am missing something. Also you would use gross score for final score for contest. If things were correct the score would be 149 4/8, but think that 1 4/8 G4 would negate it to 148 even. Not nit picking and sorry for the inconvenience, just want to make sure we get all points on the board.
