Season opens October 1st here in Illinois. The renovation for sure won’t be done by then because of finances, but my wife enjoyed hunting when I took her out last year, so I should be able to make at least some time for it. She almost got the biggest basket 6 I’ve ever seen. I swear this thing was 95” plus at 6 points. I can’t wait to see what he turns into this year.
Pulled a card from my camera at my Parke County property that has only been out for 5 or so days… Already got a few prospects showing up. Probably wouldn’t shoot this one - but still not bad.
Trimmed some shooting lanes. Did some reconnaissance and found a new Creek access stand I plan to either hang in the next week or two or wait and do a hang and hunt. My only real issue is - if we have a wet October/November the stand could be difficult to access depending on creek conditions. It was very easy to access today but it’s been pretty darn dry here for the better part of 2 months. It’s literally the only way to access this stand without blowing everything else up. Just trying to get things dialed in. If I’m being honest - my hopes or expectations are not really high heading into this season. I just am not locating the class of buck I want to kill - hunt?! Oh I’m going to hunt my butt off. But I just don’t want to kill a 130” deer. The problem is - I will probably have one walk in front of me at some point and it will be decision time…
Thanks! I’ve got some good ones - just a little spoiled. Not because I’m a great deer Hunter - I most certainly am not. But I hunt some pretty good areas and I’ve seen what is possible - so I tend to be greedy/patient at the same time if that’s possible.
I wish I had that to deal with. I only occasionally see deer near that caliber. I know they are possibly around but lots of private property around me with better conditions to hold them. The past few years though I have been sighting at least one nice deer at some point through the season. I like to aim towards the bigger side of what I usually see and have been passing smaller bucks but my choices are generally not that size. I could be patient but I enjoy shooting deer to much to pass up something that remotely gets me excited!! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums

I am not patient this year. I am 1 for 5 in the last 5 years. I've past a lot of good bucks because I knew I had giants lurking only to eat tag soup. I see a deer I like, I am letting an arrow fly. I haven't shot a typical buck in 10 years. That's why the clean 8 I shared has me so fired up.
No doubt!! I believe I have. It’s knowing the possibility to retire is not too far away. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm really geting a lot of activity in the morning underneath my ladder stand on these chilly mornings. The unfortunate part is if they sick around and bed down right there, I might be stuck for a while with no exit strategy. Sent from my SM-N975U using Tapatalk
Pretty cool here in IN as well - 55 or so I think. I got out and hunt a set last night… Got me to thinking - finding the perfect tree for a a tree stand has to be one of the most satisfying things in deer hunting. I mean - I can think of other things in hunting more satisfying but man finding a good tree in the area you want to hunt is awesome!
I agree and finding that perfect tree in Kansas can be really challenging. It usually wind blown and not near straight enough. Way to small or way to big!!! And lastly a lot of the trees in my area will poke you!!! Nothing worse then trying to get i n a black/honey locus tree. Unless I have pre-scouted specific trees I quit trying to use a climber years ago. Not straight, to much taper, and way to many limbs to work around....
Get yourself a saddle. It's my first year in one so my experience is limited to one hunting sit and the practice this summer, but I'll be using it quite a lot this year bouncing around to different public spots in an attempt to save my spot with a couple giants for late October/early November.
