Here he is. He was a pretty good sized one probably 40 to 50 pounds. Has some pretty good sized teeth too.
Nice! The female I killed the first week of October had bigger teeth than my 60lbs pit bull. Rain kept me in today. Good luck to everyone hunting. It’s about to pick up here. Since it’s raining I’m going to go check a camera around 11 or noon that’s close by.
Anyone else have vacation time during the rut? I've got 2 weeks off. Need to fill 2 doe tags and help my son fill his buck tag.
I leave Monday morning for two weeks in Illinois. Have some good bucks on camera that I’m hoping to run into. I’ll keep you guys posted Sent from my iPad using Bowhunting.com Forums
The trials and tribulations of a new hunter, I am helping a young man (25) learn to bow hunt this year. This kid is a crack shot out to 40 on the range, take note I said on the range !!! I finally take him down to one of the smaller property I hunt and put him up my "Doe patrol" stand as I call it. I have sat that stand three times year and have had deer within range every sit. I take him in, he climbs up and get settled in. I walk off to a stand about 400 yards away, I told him where the deer will come from and I told him at 530 pm he needs to be standing with bow in hand. At 540 I get a text " took a shot" my reply "shot look good" his reply "yup". I reply "stay in stand and knock another arrow, be there shortly after dark". At approx. 555pm I have a doe come off my left and stop at 10 yards, I think to myself let me finally shoot a doe and get some meat and 50 points for the team. My original thought for the night was I was not shooting unless it was a shooter buck. Anyways, I draw start to settle the pin, then a little voice in my head said" do you really want to track and drag two deer tonight?". I decide not to release the arrow and let her walk, I was here to help this young man get his first deer and needed to concentrate on that. I get down at dark and walk over to his stand, he gets down we walk over pull arrow out of ground and no blood. I search around and no blood on ground. We walk back to my truck and I start telling him we have all missed. He needs to think of what he could have done that made him miss and remember that for next time. After a few minutes he states, "now that I think about it, I did not get my mask pulled down and I think my kisser button was at bottom of my chin". That'll do it I said. Anyways, lesson learned for him, anchor points, anchor points, anchor points. There is a reason I put that kisser on that bow............ I feel bad for him that he missed but it is a lesson to be learned. Bad part is I gave him a 15 foot ladder stand to put up in his yard to practice out of and he freely admitted he never practiced from the stand. Who wants to bet this morning he is putting up that stand and practicing? !!!! Dave
He should get some luminocks- he’ll either know exactly where it hit or he’ll know he didn’t follow through and stay on target until the arrow hits home.
This is my last night of work for 2 weeks. I'm leaving early in hunting in the AM, then I'll also do an evening hunt. Also hunting Wednesday morning.
Trying to get permission from property owners. We have all this technology to communicate and reach out to people nowadays, yet I ain’t even gotta damn phone book lol not that it would matter bc most people don’t list their numbers anymore
In the past if we can not get in touch with land owner, we have called game warden and he has told us to continue on with tracking the deer. Is that a possibility for you? Dave
I got permissions all lined out and proceeded to the spot where I stopped last night. Blood was spotty but easy to track. Got to the spot where I though I heard him blow and there was a couple globs of lung blood. You could tell he was standing there for a while before I bumped him. Didn’t look like he bedded down though. After that decent spot, it thinned out to just drops. 50 yards later we were chasing pin drops. I told my wife to stay at the last pin drop and I went ahead to try to cut more blood. I went to a creek crossing thinking the force of him jumping would bust it back open or make him throw a clot. So 60 yards from my wife, I pick up two watery drops of blood. I went 100 yards in every direction grid searched and walked property lines to know avail.
