Today is my last day of work for 19 days going to hunt hard and see what happens Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Well no shot taken, nothing came down buck wise out of bedding. After three all day sits out of the last four days, I need a slight rest and work emails are piling up. Gonna skip the morning, go to work in morning and I’m gonna take afternoon off to hit the tree again. Likely last hunt before gun season on Saturday…
I got close tonight. Good 125ish 8 pt came in head on for 30 yds. Got to 5 yards and was still head on. I won't take that shot. He sensed me and trotted off. Tough one as this has been a slow year for me. Have to shoot my bow a bit to make sure its still on and keep grinding. Good luck to you.
And to you! I'll likely snap off a couple shots today quick before heading out too. Got good winds for the best stand again and will hopefully be there for the final three to four hours of the day.
I haven't been out this week, last week was a bust in MN. Weather sucked and this went quiet. It's now shotgun season so deer will be getting pushed around, I might go sit tonight but my wind isn't great; otherwise I'll be out Friday night and Saturday morning. I've spent more time with my recurve this season and I've blown two opportunities at the same 8pt, probably around 110 inches give or take a few. Ironically enough, when I've brought my compound out I've seen no decent bucks with the exception of that big 10 I shot in early October but never recovered. I wouldn't say I'm discouraged by any means but I will say I may have hunted too hard too early and there's a bit of frustration. Hopefully we can all loose some arrows here real soon and lay some down!
Love the fact you're going recurve so much - this the first year for that? I truly think that is the next thing I really want to get into and try. What recurve do you have?
Ive been shooting trad gear for about 5 years and mostly gone out stump shooting and used my black hunter longbow. I just didn't quite have the confidence, especially because I did shoulder shoot a buck a couple years ago and just felt miserable after it, but I've spent a ton of time shooting over the past several months I finally felt confident enough to have that be my primary weapon for this year. Around February last year I purchased the sanlida 3 piece 58" recurve for around $100 and after doing a bit of reshaping on the riser I found myself really enjoying the bow. This year I decided to, an noted, really focus on using trad gear and set out with a goal to harvest a deer with it, which I did accomplish, but continue to find myself wanting to use the recurve more and more. There is just something about the simplicity and the instinctive part that I thoroughly enjoy. You should definitely give it a try if you haven't, even going after small game, pheasants and stump shooting are a blast.
Quick update. Got out this am. Still here for 30 more minutes. Saw 5 different buck and one I likely should have shot at 20 ish yards. It was at first light and was not one of the three I was initially looking for. Hope to get out each morning next few days Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Bout ready to head out from work and run an errand, get home, load up, shower and head to property. Fingers crossed a biggun slips up.
I've always been curious if those $100 bows are worthy but you are the fourth guy I trust that has went trad and not purchased some massively expensive bow. At that rate arrows are going to cost more...this needs to happen cuz I've had the itch for years.
Good luck Ty. I'm hoping to hunt for a few hrs in the morning before work. If not I won't be able to hunt to next week as my daughter has soccer tourney in Iowa this weekend.
Its a good introductory bow, the only thing i was a bit worried about was getting the wrong poundage. They also have a 60" one piece recurve that is sharp. I've definitely spent more on arrows and broadheads than I have on the bow. I actually just purchased some flu-flu arrows from lancaster for pheasant hunting and AAE has trad vanes that are plastic and feathered that I also ordered, I'm going to throw those on some arrows tomorrow after they arrive so then I don't have to worry about feathers getting wet; I'm just hoping the AAE trad vanes fly decent.
Good luck everybody getting out this week! It seems my hunts after work have come to a halt. I'm not sure if I'll be able to squeeze some in or not. Works been pretty tough here lately and getting home late hasn't helped. So far I haven't seen a buck since Halloween. I did trim up my area some, my woods are severely overgrown. The furthest i can see from my stand is about 20 yards. Im coming up with a plan in the spring to clear a good bit of it. I hunted public on Saturday last week and I didn't see anything, on Sunday I almost sealed the deal on another doe. Had her and 3 others at 12 yards and 2 squirrels caused the does to freak out. I still havea doe tag and 3 buck tags burning holes in my pockets lol. I did buy some new bolts for my crossbow this week and sighted it in for broadheads. On Saturday this week I'll be taking the crossbow out for some doe patrol with hopes of a buck deciding to come in. Sent from my SM-S911U using Tapatalk
Hey guys! I finally got my buck entered and have a little time at the service station while waiting for my trucks oil change to tell the story of my buck I was lucky enough to harvest. I say "lucky" because a lot has to go right for this to happen. Last week I was hunting hard for the double beam buck I have shared a few times. I had an encounter with him last Sunday and continued to hunt the same area throughout the week. I had a lot of encounters with a lot of immature bucks and as the week kept going I had multiple encounters with the same smaller bucks. Thursday morning around 930am, I am texting a hunting buddy and I ask him if I was being too aggressive to leave my stand and sneak to another stand about 200 yds away that is on a creek bed. I haven't hunted this stand this year but it's not the most comfortable of stands. He said I should absolutely go give it a try and so I pack up and slowly make my way. The wind was in my face out of the north and as I finally almost reach my stand a bedded doe jumps up and trots off. No big deal. I get to the stand and clip my bow on the string. I start to make my way up the stand and the ladder strap at the very top snaps! Shoot! I climb back down and decided I'll just head back to the truck and eat some lunch before the afternoon but before I go I wanted to check the ditch for any buck sign. I usually have a camera on this ditch but never got around to it this year. As I'm taking a few steps down the creek bed I look to my right and my buck is walking my way with his head down about 50 yds away! I duck down quickly and crawl back to my bow that is still clipped to the rope. I grab my bow and clumsily get it unclipped, nock an arrow and wait. As minutes pass, I start to wonder if he saw me and bound off while crawling to my stand. I peak up above the buck brush and he's 30 yds away coming across the creek. I pull back and wait, he stops 20 yds away and pegs me but it was too late. I send the FMJ with a Rage Hypodermic his way. He mule kicks, blows, and takes off up the hill, then double backs my way. Then the uncertainty sets in. Did I hit him? It happened so fast I wasn't sure. I cross the creek and start looking for blood and I found a lot of it! I back out, text my friend and call my wife. I give him almost an hour and start the trail. It didn't take long and he piled up 40yds away. I tell everybody if I would have waited any longer to move stands I probably would have bumped him, if I would've left early I probably would have never seen him. I don't have any pics of this buck and neither does my neighbor. It was like it was meant to be! Keep going guys, you never know what might happen! Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk
Just wondering if anybody uses a saddle system? I'm looking at investing in one. I've watched the video tetherd has put out. Just trying not to break the bank. Sent from my SM-S911U using Tapatalk
