Are any of you guys using any new tactics or hunting techniques this season?

My main change in tactics is the use of a mock scrape dripper. I've never used one before so that's a significant change in tactics for me. I just hope to get the right scents in it at the right times to keep the bucks around.

yup. I have 1/2 acre as well. It is literally 100yds inside city limits thanks to the city of Winston annexing our little patch of the world and building a CAT axle facility 1/2 mile away. Now they are safe and known as Mommy's deer. lol

Ok so I made it out to my lease today. Found all 5 feeders completely empty and nothing planted afterall in the fields. So they are definitely hitting them pretty hard. Lots of tracks and signs around each of them. Pulled my camera and hoped for the best. A few does but no bucks on this one so time will tell what we find. Enjoy a few pics. Nothing special but pics of deer just the same. Note to self.....I have got to work on my camera placement.

Don't get crazy with the scents Rem. I've seen people ruin their season because they overdid it, or used something that scared the deer into the next county.
I would just freshen up the ones you have established once in a while, the bucks will keep it going. And that's my 2 cents ;)

    Nice pics Eric!

Thanks for the tips Fred. I was actually thinking that aswell so thanks for confirming my suspicion. Yeah I don't think I will mess with the scents any. It seems that they have taken it over already so I may not even mess with it at all anymore.

Not really trying anything new. Last year I missed 3 and it was all on me. I thought I was ready and my judging distances was pitiful. This year I've tried working on the little things in regards to shooting. I know I will get my chances and just looking forward to sealing the deal.

At least they were clean misses. Its a horrible feeling to hit one and make the mistake of tracking to early and jumping it to never find it. That happened to me on my second doe last year. I'd much rather have a clean miss than that happen.

Same here. I was very thankfully they were clean. I'd feel like crap knowing I just wounded an animal. The first one was just a clean whiff and misjudged distance. the next two were the same day and I just thought is was nerves. As a former rifle hunter it's pretty cut and dry. This is a whole new animal and I love it. The only reason I kept my rifle is freezer insurance.

Wow! Those are some nice cam pics. I guess my only new tactic this year has been to make sure I get my scouting done early and give the woods plenty of time to recover from me being in there. I have all of my scouting done until the season starts. Last season I was in the woods constantly, and it was also close to the season.

Ive been bow hunting for 15 years and self tought. For our teammates that are new or relativly new to the sport i figure i would throw out there some tips. Now my tips are for where i hunt. Mostly fields and tree lines with small 5acre wood blocks and some swamps.
    Tips
.1 i found out when i shoot a deer regardless of what time of year it is, it always disrupts deer activity for at least 2-3 weeks. No matter where i put the gut pile. So what does this mean you ask? If your looking for a buck dont shoot a doe or a lessor deer until you get your buck.

.2 deer are sensitive to pressure. After 2-4 hunts they already know your there I.E. the does do. If you feel the urge to hunt in early october go to other lessor spots and not the cover or even close to any bedding cover. You dont want to mess up natural doe movements.

.3 i found running trail cameras is good but can cripple your chances of getting a buck of good caliber by over checking it. I go ounce per week and i actually think its to much. Im still on the fence about cameras in general ther unnatural.

.4 i have better luck in the mornings hunting tree lines or edges of swamps or cover waiting for a buck that is running late. Your gonna want to travel tree lines not cut through open fields. I also am in the stand 2 hours before shooting light.

.5 hang your stand at least 28 feet so they cant smell you along with scent control

.6 my opinion scents, fake rub, scrapes yada yada yada only 1.5 year olds fall for and those tactics will cripple ya. Your best weapon is a good grunt tube.

.7 reason why i dont bother hunting in the early part of season is becuz i have never seen a quaility buck in early october. And in hunting early i disrupted doe movement and destroyed the rut.

.8 im not big on evenings but i see alot of movement from 12-3pm and i stubbled upon that 4 years ago when i had nothing to do and hunted early pm. I was surprised.

.9 hunt your best stand the first time betwwe nov.1-7 everyday. Dont worry about stand burnout its the rut and before lock down. I will always see on the 2nd or 3rd the first hot doe and you will know. All my bucks came at this timeframe.

Hope this helps a little if anyone has any ? Just ask

Lots of great advice there! I agree with nearly everything you put out. The buck i shot last year was my second sit in that stand for the year and it was Nov 1st. If you know bucks will travel through there STAY OUT.

I love hunting to much to wait until the rut to go out so i will explore public land, or hunt behind my house on my 5 acres. I have some great bucks here so if i get lucky its a bonus but i always keep my "serious" spots for prime time.

I have to bet for the guys on the east coast it might be a slightly different time frame for you.

The grunt tube is great advice. The only scent i love to use is tarsal gland. But again thats only when the rut is kicking into high gear.

The only true way to learn is from the time and experiences you have out in the woods.

Definitely some great advice there. I have a question though. This is my second year bow hunting, so I'm still trying to gather all the gear that goes along with the sport, which means I have yet to buy a trail camera or two. After scouting a couple properties of mine that I know are holding good bucks (landowners word), I've come across a couple spots running parallel to thick swamp areas that have lots of sign of HUGE deer droppings, I'm talking huge. I'm assuming these are buck droppings. The location of these droppings is consistent with where I've had a couple buck sightings in seasons past with the rifle. Should I go balls out opening morning and set up right on that sign while the bucks are still patterned for the summer? The landowners have seen them in daylight. Or hold off until the rut? I should note that I definitely can't wait until november to hunt. I have to attempt put some meat on the ground in the early season. The doe sign is very thick almost anywhere on these properties. You can't walk 40 yards without seeing a travel highway or seeing droppings. What would you do?
