I went out to check static cams and inspect for hurricane damage. This giant beech tree came down and smoked my most anticipated stand. I just moved it here on 8/23! The bright side is that I have a new hole in the canopy for a 1/4 acre food plot.
Ate least you weren't in it!!!!!!! I was hoping somebody knocked something down this weekend. Oh well, we are just getting started. It was another brutally warm day by me. I saw flashes about 30 minutes before dark but never did see what they were. Otherwise the other sits of the weekend were fruitless as well. Mid 70's again for the weekend and it's youth rifle weekend. Something's gotta give!!!!
I really thought i would have got a doe, but didn't even see one. Wont be long, next sit. Hopefully get out tomorrow evening Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
So, my wife and I finished up with painting the exterior (stucco) of our house this weekend! It didn't afford me any time to hunt, but it'll provide me with more time going forward. This week looks like a crazy weather week. 80+ today with a fairly good cold front moving through overnight. I was originally planning on hunting Tuesday afternoon. Then I won a pair of tickets for the MN Wild game tomorrow night. The weather goes back into the 80's on Wednesday with another 15-degree temp drop into Thursday. I was then planning on going out that night, I check my calendar and I've got the first RMEF meeting of the year Thursday evening which was set up that day at my request because of the cold front on Tuesday evening. I can't win even when I try to set myself up for success. Oh well, it's a long season and that'll give my main stand on that property plenty of time to cool off after I spent 6+hours traipsing around bedding areas looking for a wounded deer. I'll be able to get out at least once this weekend, then Alissa and I are headed for the mountains to chase elk for a first rifle elk hunt in CO. It'll be great to get back out there again!
Wasn’t for the lack of trying that’s for sure! Seen a lot of little deer. This years fawns…maybe one that wasn’t this years…wet and warm is what I’m chalking it up to. I won’t be able to get out much this upcoming week because I’ll have my kids all week. Might sneak out once or twice maybe. Next week I have a shutdown week and will be hitting it hard! I just got back from being out of the country for 9 days. Got a small procedure thursday that will probably keep me in the house for the weekend. After that, I'll have to play the wind and weather game. With just a small area to hunt, don't want to booger it up too much. My buddy sees mostly does so hopefully bucks will start making their way onto the property end of the month checking out area.
That’s what I’m talking about! Congrats bud! I messed up on a good one this morning. Set up on a point that was raining acorns on public. First public hunt of the year. Seen a few little rubs in the dark. 150 yards from the parking lot. When it got light enough to see I decided to do a wind check. Milkweed got stuck to my finger and like a dummy I shook it off. Unknown to me…one was right behind me at 20 yards. Was in WAY before daylight and idk if it came in and bedded right behind me and I didn’t even know or what. Anyway. Heard one short blow and turn around and it was a biggin. 140+ anyway. He bound off and blew the whole ridge out…the chase begins ha Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Youch. Been there before. Got caught spitting when I used to chew. He didn't bust me right away but walked down wind and he snorted or laughed and then took off. I think it was definitely a laugh. I did not see the humor.
Well can’t sleep…gonna get the kids off to school today then go do a little scouting. I’ll bring my bow just incase. Cold front hit tonight. Won’t make it to the woods until about an hour after daylight… Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
You never know right. I shot a doe a few years back when I walked to the stand I sat the night before and left my grunt tube there. I walked about 50 yards and my aunt asked if I was going to take my bow. I kind of laughed and then thought, why not? No camo except my hat. My dad got a laugh looking at his cell cam. I walked by in a rush, walked back in a rush, drove by on the wheeler, thumbs up with a doe on the wheeler on the way back. Good luck out there this weekend guys.
Nice work, Holt. I'm stuck in the office for the rest of the week and promised my girls to take them golfing tomorrow after school. This year has been slow for me so far... from the standpoint of being in the woods. I'll get a doe on the ground soon, and who knows, maybe a little redemption as well.
