Wow, I'm gone for a couple of days, and things are happening; good and not quite so good... so far. Good luck, Holt. Take it slow and be patient. GR, congrats on the doe! I can't wait to stick a deer. It was Saturday evening of the second weekend last year when I filled my first of three tags. Hopefully, I'll repeat that this year. I'm running dangerously low on freezer meat. Thankfully, my dad just got back from salmon fishing in Alaska, so we're full up on fish! I'll get out Saturday morning and Sunday evening. Slight cold from slowly rolling through the Midwest this weekend. High on Friday of 80° and by Sunday 65°. I was sitting out by the lake last night and looking up noticed quite a northern lights display! Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
If you have any challenges finding him, think hard about backing out and getting the dog. You won’t disturb the woods as much with a good dog as you will grid searching. I’ve been on several dozen tracks with a good dog and the hit you’re describing is nearly 100% recovery with a dog that has decent experience. Best of luck, let us know how things go!
Still looking. Slow going, been raining all morning and its slowing me down. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
No luck fellas. I walked until my body said enough. Jumped a small buck in the first hour, then never seen another deer. At this point not sure what to do. Guess I will give it a couple days and see if I see any vultures. Im really thinking I might have ran him off the property yesterday. I was probably 400-500 yard range from property line when I jumped him, which is nothing for a deer. Just this property has way better bedding then the neighbors. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
Dang bummer. Well don’t let it keep ya down for the year! Been there ha Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I will bounce back. Give me a few days and I will be back chasing them. I have a buck from last year that im still after. I will also give a couple more walks for this buck, not going to give up on him yet. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
That's a tough pill to swallow. It happens to the best of us, and I wouldn't wish the feeling on my worst enemy. Sorry Holt. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk
Got in a blind to see if anything was moving and practice a bit. we need cooler weather and maybe a not so full moon, do you guys hunt any moon phase? Sent from my iPad using Bowhunting .com Forums
I dont hunt the moon either. Always seems to hit or miss. But the last 2 nights at my house, i have seen the most deer I have seen in years. Even this morning they were walking thru the yard. Had around 17 or 18 a evening. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
I hunt when I can lol usually every other weekend when I don’t have my kiddos and when I’m able to use vacation days. Sometimes I can sneak off while they’re at school. That’s actually how I got my buck last year. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
No moon phase for me. Unless I'm hunting at night. (; The neighbor said he passed an 11 point that's been around the last few years. This deer would be 5 years old. He said he had him at 8 yards with the cross bow but thought it was too hot. He has used my cooler before and he knows he's welcome to it. Sounds like a story to me but I hope it's true! There is a little cold front moving in this weekend to break the upper 80's heat wave we've had. I won't hunt my property unless I have evidence of a good buck. I do have a prospect on some public land that deserves a look and the wind will be just right when the front moves in. Hopefully get a little rain that stops in the evening so they get on their feet and hit the oak flat.
The bucks have disappeared for us. At least on camera anyway. Fingers crossed the worst case scenario isn’t happening. We got slammed so bad with ehd 3 years ago and it was finally getting back to normal around here. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Where are you located Kyle? I have heard about some of this about an hour east of us here in West Central Illinois. I do know that most of the deer I’m getting pictures of right now are on acorns in the timber, they have almost completely abandoned green food plots right now. Not sure if that’s what’s happening to you or not.
I would second this opinion. We had a bumper crop last year but it's slim pickings for acorns this year. Find a good area with a couple trees dropping around here and you could have a banner day.
