I had some luck on Saturday morning at about 10:30. I saw a lot of activity including hard chasing and seeking. It was really still and the ground was wet so it was hard to hear the deer move. This guy stepped on a twig behind me or I likely would have missed him passing through. He was cruising the timber looking for does and I didn't have much time to make a decision. I just knew he was a very mature buck with dark, heavy antlers and I was ready to put a buck down. I stopped him at 33 yards and put a 100 grain muzzy through his heart. He went down in sight in about 10 seconds. He actually scored higher than I would have guessed, which is always a nice surprise. He has 37 7/8" of mass. 162 1/8 gross.
Thanks guys. I got him entered in the contest. I hope to get out in the next day or two and start taking does. Good luck!
I just looked through some trail cam pics I saved from this year and found that I had a few good ones of my buck. I knew it was an old deer, but really hadn't put much thought into targeting this buck because I didn't think he looked like he would score that much. But its fun to have several good pictures of him.
I tell you what, things have been really slow this week here. Little bucks are out pushing does around some, but I haven't seen any real sign of the does being receptive. I skipped this mornings hunt and actually went and hung a stand on a 100 acre piece of public ground that I think gets overlooked. If things don't turn for me here, I'm thinking about spending some time up there in the next couple days. Found a nice spot that has a great view and is close to a picked bean field. There's a trail along the edge in the timber that has a nice rub/scrape on a cedar tree and another extremely fresh scrape a little ways down the trail from where I'm setting up. I guess I'm just getting desperate, but I've always wanted to hunt that place, so I'm going to give it a try.
Just got into the stand a little while ago. They are finally picking the beans south of my property. Don't know if that's good or bad for this evenings sit. I guess I'll find out. Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
Had the biggest buck I've ever seen while hunting Chase a doe past me a few minutes after I got up in the tree this morning. No chance for a shot. Since then have had two does and a button buck in range. Still waiting for a good buck. Seen one other deer and a herd of pigs. Good morning to be sitting in a tree. Good luck to those who are lucky enough to be hunting this morning
50 points is 50 points. You can't really see in this picture, but it was a really big old doe. I gotta come clean, I screwed up twice this year. A week ago I hit a big 10 that was busted up from fighting. I think he ducked my arrow. Little to no sign, but he ran off with the arrow. We did a grid search the next day to no avail. Today I was in for an all day sit close to a road on a funnel. Tons of activity all morning. Then a gas company came in to drop off equipment unexpectantly. Thought I was done for, but not so. 15 minutes after a 6 rolled thru and then a great 9, but alas I screwed it up. Luckily I busted this trophy doe and that was it. Got a bitchin' cold front coming thru next few days in SW PA, so im commiting to closing the deal for yinz. Safe and Happy Hunting all!
