The fields have been empty the last several sits so tonight I’m sitting in oak grove at the base of a ridge. A couple of fresh scrapes within 100 yards. We’ll see if anything shows up Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Front coming through. Temps are dropping. Hitting the ground blind till dark if I don't get called back to work.
Well it looks like we need a post to get us back on the front page so here it is. I didn’t get to hunt this weekend but got to play in the workshop with my son. My son (7 years old) is taking a Gifted Resource Council class this fall. He had about six or seven courses to choose from and he picked Chess. He absolutely loves it. All he wants to do right now is play chess, baseball or soccer (he scored a goal off a corner kick yesterday…. wooohoo!) Well, in my opinion, every handsome chess player needs a handsome chess board. I had some scrap walnut and maple in the basement so we decided to make one. It’s not perfect but it’s not bad for our first try. After a few more coats of hand rubbed shellac and poly she’ll be ready for a game. My son is getting pretty good at sanding by the way… Not a bad way to spend the weekend if you can’t hit the woods. -D
So far a doe followed by a fork horn then a big boar hog. Shifting gusting winds have gotten worse but at least I'm hunting.
Great project! Great skill to teach your child. I grew up in a woodworking family and those are some of my fondest memories with my father.
I got out Friday evening. We have had some nice cold fronts that have really got deer moving well. I saw 43 deer, but only two bucks. One was a youngish 8 point and the other was really good. The hay fields were FULL of does. I noticed that there were tons of new scrapes opening up and they were really getting pounded on. I am going to pull a few cards over lunch from cameras I put on scrapes.
Got off the ATV and had three does walk by at 50 to 60 yards. They never gave me a look. Back in the tree. Wind is up but looks like they are moving.
I had fall army worms take an entire 2 acre field of winter rye to the bare dirt. It was a beautiful stand. I had put 350 pounds of seed on it BY HAND seeder. It was cultipacked and got rain within an hour of being planted in late September. It was perfect and the deer were already pounding it. I am going to go till it all up today and try it again. Its getting very late, but I have to give it a try. I had 17 bucks in that plot at one time on a late season hunt last January. I cant stand to not have something there for the deer. I think winter rye is my only good option. The soil temps are still good and we are supposed to get rain on Saturday.
Send some of that rain down here. Been about seven weeks since we had any. My food plot looks like a dust bowl
Hey Guys I need some advice. I have a big woods property that has an old beaver bog in the middle of it with some pine islands that that have some big fresh rubs on them. The buck that beds there I know is at least 5 years old. There is a dog leg of that same beaver bog that has over 20 rubs in a 50 yard stretch but none of those rubs have been hit yet this year. Do you think it is worth while to sit over that concentration of rubs at this point in the season?
Do you know if he made it through last year? Has something made him change his routine if he's still there. I'd set a camera and see if there is any activity. In the past I've had deer use the same run and scrape line for years then suddenly no activity. I set a camera up about 100 yards away and picked them up the first night? Things to consider.
Jumped a heavy deer 100 yards from my stand this morning, he didn’t run so I’m hoping he comes back by later. I’ll be out all day Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Trying a mid day sitting in the ground blind. Worked this morning. Had a good front come through early. Sun just came out so I'll give it a few hours before going back to work this evening.
Sorry I haven't been very active lately. Just been very busy and finding it hard to get much fine to hunt. I'm hunting this evening. My 6th sit of the season. I'm hoping to get a crack at this guy I'm calling Dozer. He's a beast of a deer. Huge body, makes the other bucks I have on cam look like yearlings. Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
Actually that was velvet still. That pick was from Sept. 27th I think. Way later than I've ever seen one with velvet. But, he does have some good mass. I'll post a more recent pic when I get back in tonight. Sent from my LG-H820 using Tapatalk
