Got my second hunt of the season in this morning. Man there's nothing better than a morning hunt when the weather is perfect. It was a pretty exciting day in the stand with some fairly late movement. Didn't see any bucks but was totally covered up with does. I think there were 11 or 12 total throughout the morning. Had a fawn running around bawling all over the timber. Had 3 mature does walk right under my stand and had 2 does that bedded less than 20 yards from the stand. I almost shot one of them. She got up out of her bed and just stood there broadside for 10 minutes. I had her on camera and it would have been a good shot, but there was one little branch over her vitals and I just decided not to shoot. I don't really like taking does off my property before the rut. Since I hunt such a small piece of ground I feel like I need those does around and I don't want to do anything to lessen the numbers or run them out of the area. A hunt doesn't have to result in a kill to be successful and I consider this morning a success.
I have a question for my teammates, what kind of acorn tree this is? Could someone tell me from look of this pic? I have a tree behind my yard, that has dropped a ton of em on the ground. I'm picking them up to lace with my corn feeder. Sent from my VS987 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
In the tree waiting for daylight. Good luck to those who are lucky enough to be hunting this morning.
Wind came up and continually changed direction this morning. Pulled camera cards coming out. Got a zebra hog and lots of turkey pictures, a few small bucks and does with yearlings. I'll be headed back out in a few for an afternoon set.
Back in a tree. First afternoon hunt on the back 40. Pulled camera card on the way out looks like more afternoon activity back here than morning time. Nothing great, mostly does yearnings and small bucks.
That hog is one of the coolest things I have ever seen in nature. That would make an awesome rug in a mancave. I would pay good money to shoot that sucker.
Just had about a 200 pound black boar go by about 40 yards out and in some thick stuff. Tried grunting at him. He was too busy eating acorns. Fletch that's the first one like that with the zebra pattern I've ever seen. He is getting shot if I get the chance.
Back in the tree. Got called to work last night. Got down early and bumped one about 100 yards from the stand. Maybe today.
Well, I finally get to hit the Woods this weekend. I live about 4 hours from the land we hunt so I don't getup there as much as I'd like but when I do get to go I generally make it a four-day weekend. I'll be hunting from Saturday to Tuesday and I can't wait. Sunday (the 8th) will also be my birthday and I've never got one on my birthday. 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th but never on the 8th. Time to get it done!!! -D
Good luck. I'm having a hard time finding time to get out. My daughters High School softball season is almost over. But, she will start playing for her travel team as soon as HS season is over. I think they play the next 5 or 6 weekends I love watching her play, but damn that's too much for me. I'm good with about 3 tournaments in the fall and about 10 in spring and summer. It's a new team for her, she guest played with them in their last tournament of the summer and really likes the coach and the girls so I hope it will be good for her. She's only 14 but playing on a second year 16U team that's playing in a lot of college exposure tournaments. It was her choice to make the change from her previous team. I think it was the right choice, but seems like we always feel that way at the beginning. Anyway, I'm hoping to get some time out in the woods as I can. I will have a week on from Nov. 4th through the 12th. I'm hoping I have some quality bucks start showing up on my property, if not I'm going to have to start looking to some public land or about an hour away at my wife's grandparents farm. I'm hoping to pull my cards tonight and see what has shown up in the last couple weeks.
I'll be hitting the woods tonight and tomorrow. It's supposed to drop down to 40 up here. State wide season has opened up finally so I may try out some new spots.
