I watched a buck for 40 minutes in a field stayed 75 yards, I called him to 25 yards with some doe bleats, I had him broadside at 25, drew back and hit my elbow on the tree. I let down and he stepped behind a limb and reappeared at 25 yards broadside. I dropped the string on him and the arrow sailed over his back. I guess it was his lucky day twice. I told myself I was going to pass when he walked out into the field.
Just getting us back on the 1st page. This weekend, I'll be tearing down some built-in shelving in the garage and putting up some modular shelving to make better use of my space. I'm keeping my fingers crossed hat I'll have time to get some target practice in. For those of you hitting the woods... Stay safe, have fun and best of luck. -D
I finally have a weekend to spend some time getting ready for season. I still have food plots to put in thanks to the drought. At this point, I will only plant Buck Forage Oats and winter rye. It looks like a chance for rain next week so I can only hope. I am so glad that I planted three acres to clover a couple of years ago. It has done well and the deer are pounding it. I also have about 30 acres of alfalfa that is in good shape and holds a ton of deer every night. Most of the guys that planted Fall plots have had nearly total failures. We had just enough moisture to make the seed swell and try to sprout and then die. That's why I have waited so long to put mine in. Good luck to those of you that can hunt.
Well, I got my first hunt of the season under my belt. Went ahead and got skunked so at least that's out of the way. I wasn't really expecting too much, really just wanted to get out there and get my packing and setup system down. I was happy with how my camera setup sent and really like the changes that I've made since last season. It was pretty warm(about 85), luckily there was some wind so it wasn't terrible and the wind kept the skeeters off! I pulled the chips in the two cams near that stand, still not much buck activity on my place. Had two decent bucks come in one evening last week, but that was it. I went through my trail cam pics from last year this evening. There were some pretty solid bucks that were still running around in December, so I'm hoping some of them show back up.
Season Update: I shot at and missed a small 5 pointer on Tuesday. I watched a couple does on Friday, and sweated to death on Saturday. We are getting hit by the remmants of Jose on Wednesday so I'm hoping to sit Tuesday and Thursday over some food. Acorns are dropping here and the bucks have split up. The 10 pointer that I have on camera has stuck around and the smaller bucks are gone. I'm staying out of his territory till late October if I can stand it.
Got back from working response to Hurricane Irma last night. Went out and checked cameras today. The food plots I disked in and didn't get replanted are getting more pictures than the one I didn't touch. Several new bucks have showed up and the velvet is gone off of most of them. Looking forward to and hoping to have Saturday off so I can get a hunt in on opening morning.
I see most of the team has got started with their season. Here, its a week n a half away. I plan to get to go to my hunting grounds on Sunday to put a new tree stand n feeder up. Hopefully, everything will go as planned. I hope everyone's season is a successful one. Sent from my VS987 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Not yet probably won't get out till first or second full weekend in October. Opener is on a Sunday so not able to drive a few hours for a one day short hunt so will be in the duck blind on the 1st Sent from my iPad using Bowhunting.com Forums
I put in an acre of Buck Forage Oats on Tuesday evening and we got three inches of rain that night and the next morning. Perfect timing. I put in two acres of winter rye last Saturday and it is starting to germinate. It looks like the worst drought in our history is finally broke. The clover and alfalfa actually weathered it pretty well. There were 13 deer standing in the alfalfa watching me load up after planting this plot. lol.. Looks like I may want to update the time and date on my camera!
Up in a tree. Waiting for daylight. Opening morning. 71 degrees and a bit humid. Waiting to see what the morning brings. Good luck to anyone else hunting this morning.
Listened to owls and coyotes before light, hawks and crows after daylight broke, had squirrels running around, had one lone turkey walk by at 15 yards. Bumped one deer on the walk in to the tree this morning. Had to make it a short hunt but when I got back to my truck had a small six point standing there about 40 yards away. It was a nice morning to be in a tree though. Maybe tomorrow.
Another morning sitting in a tree waiting for the sun to come up. Can stay a bit longer today. Maybe I'll get to see some moving. Jumped one on the way in at the same spot as yesterday morning. Good luck to those out hunting this morning.
It's supposed to be up near 90 the beginning part of the week so I'm taking some time off. I'm hoping to hit the Woods later in the week for a couple of evening before I head to Arizona for the weekend Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
Guys I want you opinion. I left my hunting pack in my tote outside and it got soaked and has since molded and got that smell to it. I've tried to clean it out but it's a lost cause so what packs do you guys recommend Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I hunt 200 acres and we use 4-wheelers so I never walk more than a couple hundred yards to my stand. Therefore, comfort it not high on my list of prioritys for a pack. For the past three years I've been happy with my chepo $20.00 pack from Wally World. It's got plenty of pockets so I have a separate pocket for calls, scents, snacks, cold weather gloves, hat etc. Two outside pockets for water bottles and I'm good to go. However, if you hike in a long ways you may appreciate something a little more comfortable.
I just use an ass pack and carry everything else in pockets. I prefer to go light as possible in the woods.
88 degrees this afternoon and I'm sitting in a ground blind. Gotta do what you gotta do if you have limited days to hunt due to that 4 letter word called work.
