Okay. I'm cursed on bucks this year. Had a nice buck walk in this evening and I misjudged the yardage. Unfortunately I didn't miss completely. I barely clipped his sternum. I'm pretty angry with myself right now.
Man that's tough. At least you are getting opportunities. Just take a little more time! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I know brother. I took all the time in the world this time. I even took the time to close one eye and center the pin twice. It would have been a dead on shot of I hadn't totally screwed up the yardage estimation.
Congrats on the bear! Today was a good day, my daughter was released from the hospital. She had been in the hospital since last Sunday morning with a Kidney infection. It was complicated by an abscess on the front side of the kidney. That makes it much more complicated. If the antibiotics can't kill the infection, they would normally drain it with a needle and possible put a stint in to drain it, but since it's on the front side that becomes much more dangerous and complicated. The good news is that she seems to be responding to the change in antibiotics and hasn't had a fever for a day and a half or so. She's still on a high dose of a pretty strong antibiotic for the next 10 days, but we're hopeful that will take care of it. If she presents any more symptoms we will have to take here in for another CT Scan. Once we got her back home, I ran out to the piece of public land I've been scouting and set up a stand. There was some really good deer sign in the area so I'm pretty optimistic. I think this little piece of conservation area is totally overlooked. I haven't found much of any sign from other hunters. It's only about 160 acres and it's a river access so I think most people don't even realize it's there. Here's a couple pictures out of the stand. Here's a Google Maps image of the property. Here's a few out of the stand.
That's awesome news on your daughter. That really is fantastic! When will you get to hunt the new spot?
Not sure. It's an evening only spot so if I leave work a little early I could hunt it some evenings after work. Maybe Wednesday evening. Season opens on Tuesday.
Glad to hear things are getting better for your daughter. Hope they keep improving. That stand and area looks really nice. I'm no expert at map scouting but that little pinch down on the south side near that small field looks like it could be good with a N-NW wind Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Last year I was lucky enough to kill my buck on a public land spot that's only about 4 miles from my house. It was the first sit I had ever had on public land. I scouted it the day before, came in and setup my stand that Sunday afternoon and killed the first deer I had seen from the stand. A 133 6/8 ten point buck. I was pretty lucky to be at the right place at the right time. I did some scouting yesterday morning on that same piece of public ground. I had been studying aerial photos and I found a field that's about as far away from a road as anywhere else on this 3000 acre piece of ground. It's a ridge top with timber draws all around it and a bid timber island in the middle. The field has soybeans planted in it, and it has corn planted to the southwest, separated by an old timber filled fence line. There's about 8 acres of soybeans, and I've never seen soybeans so heavily browsed. I don't think there was a single plant that hadn't been nipped. They had a decent amount of pods on them, so you would expect them to be somewhere between knee to hip high. They were probably only about to the bottom of my calf at the most. There was a doe feeding in the field at 9:45 am in full sunlight so it's clear they feel safe in here. There really aren't many mature trees around the edges, so finding a stand tree was pretty tough, but I found one that should work pretty will on the south fence line. It's at the narrowest part of the bean field so I should have a shot and any deer walking through that little pinch. It will also be good for any wind out of the north or northeast which is generally our prevailing wind.
Well, I didn't get a buck this past weekend but I did come home with two does. Here's a pic of the second doe I took. She was quite a bit bigger than the first one. The shot placement looks a bit far back but she was quartering away at 10 yards. She didn't go far.
Yeah, it seems that this is going to be one of those years where I walk into the woods and the does are terrified but the bucks just laugh.
Great job on the bear redneck and another doe little chief!. Hey, you got your misses out of the way early in the year...now its automatic. Last fishing trip of the year this weekend, now the poles get put away for a bow and a gun.
I got last years buck back the other night. I need to take some better pictures, these are just from my cell phone, but I think it turned out pretty good. If I was doing it again, I think I would pick a pose that brings his nose down a little bit to kinda level off his antlers. I'm happy with the quality, my Taxi always does a nice job.
Haha, yeah. That's my wife's We were hunting together and gave her the first opportunity and she made it count. I blew my chance.
